I’ve been eyeing these with an Emotiva A-100 pairing. Anyone have an idea how these compare to the new Uni-Fi UB52’s? They both seem to be getting praise.
I haven’t heard the new ub52 yet, I will say though that the dbr-62 is a very warmer laid back speaker and I have heard the newer unifi is a more neutral speaker (as were the ub5 but those were more neutral smooth). I think the a100 would be solid for the price with the 62, but I think you could easily get more out of them with a higher end amp later on
I think it would depend on the type of sound you are after, what I would do now is grab the a100, decide on what speaker to go for, and then see if you like the speaker and what you would want to change later on imo
Got it, thanks! Regarding my original question, I just re-watched Joe N Tell’s review and forgot he actually compared measurements of the two. DBR 62 in dark green and UB52 in red, very similar!
Personally I don’t hold too much stake in measurements, especially with speakers, so I won’t comment there but I’m sure the ub52 also carries the elac house sound as well
I don’t have an amp yet, but what would you recommend? I prefer mid forward or neutral, I listen to a lot of math rock, Jazz, hip-hop, and a little bit of pop.
These do take a fair bit of power to really get going the way I liked them in demos, I might say if you can find a used adcom gfa 555 ii or 5500 that would be real sweet with these speakers for a reasonable price (if you have a way to control volume on your dac or a pre out of some sort), but it is on the larger side for sure, it would be full bodied and impactful, clean but warmer more pleasing, and solid technicalities. I think a parasound 275v2 is also another great power amp pairing, both these combos would give good drive to the speakers while maintaining that warmer smoother spacious sound, while having good control and impact as well and not sounding sloppy, the parasound would be a bit more relaxed. If you needed a smaller and all in one solution, a ps audio sprout 100 would most likely be a pretty solid match here imo, a cambridge cxa61 is also a pretty nice match too, both are a bit more warmer full bodied sound but well controlled. If you wanted to lean it a bit more towards neutral smoother but at the potential expense of some dryness, the denon pma-800ne is also pretty solid to make them more solid and even sounding, although at the loss of a bit of body.
Awesome was looking at the parasound easy to pick up one from amazon.
Awesome! Thank you so much for the response, in my country the only one you mentioned that’s readily available is tha CXA61, which I was also looking at beforehand. Thanks for the great help!
Anyone still rocking these? Ordered a pair for 2.1, Certified Brands on Amazon selling “like new” new in box pairs for $500
Mine arrived today. I’m so pleased with them. Already listening to soundtracks that I love in theory but couldn’t get over the harshness of my prior bookshelves, Athena AS1B2s. Elacs, I EQ’d the highs up for plenty of air and atmosphere, but they can simply do no wrong when it comes to fatigue.
And the detail. And the soundstage. And the body to instruments. Subtract fatigue, add major upgrade. They’re perfect. Wouldn’t recommend for a purely rock playlist but, while a rocker at heart, I rarely listen to rock in my office, mostly soundtracks for productivity.
Harder to drive, I guess I will need to pick up a Hypex amp at some point. But wow, best $500 I’ve spent on sound. There’s still some left in stock by Certified Brands seller on Amazon if anyone is looking:
