My 300B-6SN7 headphone tube amplifier, which I received yesterday, is also capable of driving the Horizon.
The site lists Horizon as 25ohm 89db, yet Z is quoting 16 ohms 89db. 16 ohms was the original posted spec, so… which one is correct? Granted I am not surprised by them being power hungry either way. I guess when I have the opportunity to purchase a pair I will have to A/B Mjolnir 3 vs power amp mono blocks. It would be the 2nd headphone I run off the Gjallarhorns.
Would not use a class Damp with headphones, goldensound ran some tests and it indices extreme noise in the high treble range that could be damaging to the headphone.
16 Ohm was the original spec and the final version is 25 Ohm. Everyone got the 25 Ohm, only the prototype was 16 Ohm.
I might see if I can swing purchasing a pair early next year if they are still available at the time. I am paying off my mortgage in January, and then buying a Yggdrasil (I know priorities right ). So maybe a few paychecks afterwards I can swing it.
Decided to switch to a single Gjallarhorn (my original one) to power Starry Night this morning to see what they difference is. Some caveats: different cables and burn in periods. Interconnects used:
https://www.amazon.com/Foot-Balanced-Microphone-NC3MXX-B-NC3FXX-B/dp/B00VFGUCHY?ref_=ast_sto_dp (they are sold out of the 2 x 1.5’ i purchased)
Noticeable difference right away. A little more detailed, slightly sweeter vocals, a little more open (not night and day but there), and overall more natural sound. I still have to play some bass heavy tracks to get a feel for those differences, but for acoustic music it pairs quite well.
Someone on head-fi actually asked me for some info recently regarding powering Starry Night via a speaker amp, and I am glad I told them that they should stick with a single Gjallarhorn if they wanted to go that rout.
Now I really want to try Horizon on this setup, lol!
Edit: I will be trying Moonlight with this chain as well to see if I like it on Gjallarhorn any better than I did before (didn’t prefer it on a speaker amp before).
Playing Inferno on the Starry Night right now, and it can definitely bring the bass still even using the single amp. One thing I did notice on the mono blocks is that it caused some resonance on that track, with slight distortion if I turned the volume up past a certain point. I might use the 2nd Gjallarhorn at my listening chair once I decommission my BF 2/64 & Soloist 3XP from my desk setup. The 3 pieces together will make up my listening chair setup.
Congrats on the mortgage!!!
I know I post a lot of Starry Night comments in this thread, but I have yet another update in my Starry Night v1 powering saga, . Just going to post the link to the comment I made in another forum.
The Horizon sounds really good and has a wide soundstage. However, it uses a lot of volume. It seems to be used more than He6se. Of course, it wasn’t a big problem in my amp environment. Yesterday, I asked a user who uses the same amplifier to compare the drive between Horizon and ModHouse Tungsten(Double-sided driver). He said Tungsten is a little easier to drive.
P.s. That amp refers to the Arte HPI 300 vacuum tube amplifier.
Lol, that is an interesting statement, and I am sure there are those who would feel some type of way about it. Tungsten vs Horizon power requirements that is.
So… now the new Question will be “can your amp drive Horizon properly”? As I will most likely get it before the Tungsten, that will be interesting given the amps I have on hand (Mjolnir 3, Gjallarhorn, and Soloist 3XP /w supercharger).
Edit: Right now my Mjolnir 3 is on high gain, push/pull mode, and set to 12 o’clock on the volume for a live recording I am listening to at the moment.
I have two amps. I use a transistor amplifier accurate hpa-a1000. And I use Arte HPI 300 as a tube amplifier. However, in the case of the Arte HPI 300, it is unlikely to be of much help to others as only 5 units of the vacuum tube amplifier were manufactured in a small workshop (AVAC Audio) in South Korea. In the case of accurate hpa-a1000, the sound level I hear appears at about 2 o’clock on the volume knob in High gain.
I used a translator, but I’m not sure if it translated well.
Interesting, with Starry night I hang out between 9 and 12 o’clock on my Mjolnir 3 depending on the track. Maybe I have a chance at driving the Horizon with Mjolnir 3. We shall see though.
Edit: The translation seems fine to me.
Had a single sided tungsten, they would be about the same to drive on my chain.
Z just dropped a video in which he claims that the new Topping stack can drive Tungsten. I wonder how it would pair with Horizon.
thought he said he clipped it to the point of the amp power cycling in his last vid lol
You are correct, I forgot he used it in that video. Lol
So SJY headphones are harder to drive than Tungsten as stated earlier. Well, there are always Schiit solutions to that problem.
