First Planar headphones

Hey,
since I got the new Topping A30 Pro now I have the power to drive almost everything and want to get a pair of planars in the future.

I already have DT1990 and Nighthawk carbons and am looking for a ‘planar sounding’ planar to complement my other headphones.

They shoudn’t be clinical sounding like my DT1990, I just want enjoyable sounding headphones that work well with pop music and classical music.

They should also be an upgrade to my dt1990 and nighthawks, at least in some aspects; I don’t want headphones that are worse than those I already have.

Pricing should be less than 1000€ with a good price to perfomance ratio.

The most promising planars for my needs are the Drop Aeon closed and Aeon noir, but I’d have to pay customs to get the Drop version and the Noir are at the limit of my budget.

Both closed and open are okay for me (but I honestly don’t know any closed planars besides Aeon and Ether).

Do you have any recommendations for my specific needs?

Have you considered the LCD-2 or LCD-X? If you were in the US, I’d recommend the LCD2PF that just got listed in the buy/sell thread

You could get a Sundara or an Ananda.

Lcd X are a bit too expensive and Lcd2 are a bit overpriced for what they are according to the community.

Sundara might be a good option and I heard good stuff about them. Can’t say that about the Ananda tho but they seem to be still better than the LCD2c

Resolve has a video where he compares the Sundara to the Ananda fwiw: HiFiMAN Ananda Review - worth it over Sundara? - YouTube

The Sundara is a great headphone. But I’ve always found it to be overly clinical for my taste. It sounds like you may want a more warm leaning planar

yeah, my DT1990 are already clean and clinical enough and sundara seems to be very similar to them. I definietly want something different as my next pair

If you want something warmer than a Sundara consider the HE-560 v4.
Currently on sale for $250.
I have those and Aeon RTC. The Aeon are certainly a higher end headphone both in build and detail, but for the price the HE-560 is fantastic when given enough power.

Though you’d probably have to pay customs on these as well.

For the AEONS, you might want to try reaching out to Dan Clark directly instead of going through Drop. He might have some overseas retailers he can work with for you. He’s typically very responsive.

Wouldn’t exactly call HE560 warm (at least with the V1.1) they are more like neutral and not bright whereas Sundara is a bit bright. The HE560 is a bit tricky tho it’s not easily easy to drive well, which may sound a lot worse than it should do

Agreed, not warm, but warmer than Sundara.
Effectively neutral and well balanced. This is based on v4. And yes they do need some juice.

The A30 Pro the OP has looks to have plenty of power on tap.

Lots of power and quality power. I suspect this is why many found it sound not very good and was never as popular until its MSRP dropped from 800USD to 250USD.

Could the T60RP be a good choice? I know that T60 Argon are probably better but not easy to get and import+ customs are probably pretty high as well

It’s a bit neutral bright so a bit too similar to DT1990

I don’t have T60RP, I do have T50RPs.
With a decent amount of moding they are fantastic cans.
The T60RP I’m sure is better, but probably still need some moding.

I don’t have DT 1990 to compare to, but I do have DT880 600ohm which are know to be the more neutral of the DT lineup. I will say those are still much brighter than my HE-560 v4.

Stock T60 will sound better than T50, whilst modding is almost a must for latter you may find the T60 enjoyable stock.

I think DT880 is not overall a brighter headphone but it has a peak in the treble whereas the 560 doesn’t. I’d probably describe it as the DT800 has a bit more treble presence but both are still neutral and balanced. Sth like Grado will be perceived to have a bright and not neutral or balanced tuning by me.
Off memories I actually think the DT1990 has a bit less treble presence than DT880 but not far off

Fair point. The DT800’s peak is around the 10k mark. Grados seem to be around the 2k-4k, so its a boost in a different part of the spectrum. That said the HE-560 v4 is more neutral than Grados.

But now that we’ve completely jacked this thread the OP’s head is probably really spinning LOL

To be fair we did contribute that 560, 880 or T60 are likely to be too similar to DT1990 :stuck_out_tongue:
