đŸ”¶ Focal Clear Mg

yeah, I have tried pad swapping the focals
they just don’t seem to respond all that well to pad swaps lol. I think this has been already confirmed by many others but I wanted to try myself
 elex pads are alright
slightly softer very similar signature but other than the stock pads everything just butchers the sound, rather curious why this happens when you have beyers that are so versatile with pad rolling.

nonetheless
still sitting down with the 2 beyers and 3 focals, mg included. Gotta say after doing a lot of a/b testing the mg and og clear really are quite different

I found quite the opposite, The MG pads sound darker than the Elex pads, while the elex pads open up the soundstage a small margin, this also affects the perception of imaging/instrument seperation for the better also. The tuning is VERY similar to the MG pads though. They are the same shape roughly while the elex pads are slightly thicker and don’t compress as much. Also look to be made of very similar materials just with different foam. I find with the MG pads my ears touch the speaker grills but with the Elex pads that they dont. So for people who dont want to pad roll but are having comfort issues with the MG pads or dont want to have to pay hundreds of dollars for replacement pads, the Elex pads are a very clear choice unless you do not want absolutely no change in the current sound signature, but yet again focal pad variance could change that anyway.

Recently got the elex pad to try it out and I prefer the MG pads, I like how it’s brighter than the elex pads. Also with the elex pads I had to adjust the volume slightly higher

I also prefer the MG pads on the elegia it actually opens up the sounds stage and the vocals got clearer to me and slightly brighter as well on the elegia.

Edit: to follow it up the elex pads made the elegia’s sound stage a bit narrower to me.
Also dekoni velour pads and elegia pads almost exactly sounds the same. I guess if i have to listen carefully the dekoni pads is slightly brighter I mean it’s really subtle. I wont probably be able to tell the difference if I were to blind test the two (elegia vs dekoni velours pads). If I were to pick, I’d probably choose the dekoni on the elegias

Question - has anyone tried to clean the pads on either the MG Pro or MG? My Pros are my daily driver now and definitely showing it after a few months of solid use. I’m afraid attempting to clean will mess up the pads
granted I have the spare set but I didn’t plan to use those until at least a year down the road.

Not on mg pads but I’ve washed my DT 770s pads back then at least twice in 2 years when it was my main work headphones.

I leave the pads on a bowl for at least 24hrs with 1 liter of water and 5ml of woolite delicate detergent
next day, basically replace the water with regular h2o and kept pressing the pads flat until detergent is gone (never wring it lol, just press it flat with palm). And air dry indoors.

caveat is it will lose the foam’s structure (it’ll lose its density) So basically it’s not going perform like the original pads. I wouldn’t recommend it tho. But having the pro with an extra pair I’ll give it a shot (someday lol)

I bought my OG Clear used, and the pads really needed a cleaning. Initially, I used basically the same method Mundeyn posted above. Except I went with Tide detergent. The pads were cleaner, but still not nearly clean enough for my liking. Maybe Tide wasn’t a good detergent choice. After that I threw them in with the laundry. That got them well cleaned. Although the fabric is visibly roughed up now. I don’t recommend you try that unless fine with potentially destroying the pads. For drying, I hung them in the output of my dehumidifier so they’d dry much quicker.

Interesting

“They’re exactly the same!”
-Shit manufacturers say

Or there is that much of a variance in their runs. Still not a good situation.

Had these for 3 months now.

Really decent headphones. Very accurate tonally. Piano is awesome.
Homebrew cables. Make my own.

I must say after 3 solid months of use I have finally switched back to my TYGR 300’s. No no no, not because I think they are better, but I’m finally starting to appreciate the variation of owning HP’s in this hobby. My god though
I pulled out my case for my MG Pros and looked at the replacement pads and wanted to cry. They are so much more brighter red than my current used pads.
My ONLY gripe from Focal is the color choice. The OG Clears also had a poor choice. Why not just go with black? Perhaps the folks at Focal do not have oily skin or sweat at all
though I doubt that. I’ll get around to cleaning the pads after I get past my anxiety of putting water on 200.00 pads.

Anyway, rant off if you want to call it that. Love the flippin headphones, just not the durability and cleanliness of the pads. For comparison - I had my TYGR’s for a year of constant use and still look new.

Well, that’s got to be one plus to the Mg non-Pro. I’ve been using mine just over 3 months now as well and outside of the very bottom of the inside of the pads, where they rub against my facial hair, they still look completely new.

Nah, my pro pads still look completely new and I’ve had my MG Pro since launch and have used them almost every day since.

Agree. I think it’s an odd choice. It would be really nice if FOCAL made black replacement pads for the Clear, but they don’t!

I just threw the elex pads on them
cheaper, alters the sound but its fairly marginal, and they don’t start looking all jacked up from being dirty after a few months

After I go through my replacement pads that came with the MG Pro’s
I just may do that to save 130 or whatever it is.

I am going to try washing them with light detergent and doing the air dry thing eventually. Pity that Focal doesn’t provide some cleaning tips considering it seems to be an issue for the OG pads as well.

I think they actually recommend a specific brand of soap.

I’m new to this audiophile scene and I just bought the Clear MG Pros. They were open box condition on ebay and they look and feel brand new but I have some concerns. I have the Fiio E07k and E09k amp/dac combo and while I realize they’re not the best to drive this type of headphone, I wanna know if it’s their fault or the headphones are faulty. First of all I’m not noticing this huge audio clarity and the volume is really low. When I raise the gains on the amp the sound gets distorted and it starts crackling. I currently have the V-Moda Crossfade M100 and they are louder and have no distortion whatsoever and the sound is much crisper on the same setup. Did I waste 1200 euros on broken headphones or do I need a stronger amp/dac to drive the Focals?

Well, the first thing I would do is plug it straight into the PC’s audio out and use the built in sound card and see if you have the same issue. If you do, then I’m afraid you might be correct. Good news is, the Clear Mg haven’t been out that long, so you could contact Focal and explain what’s going on, and I would think they would be able to do something about it.

Welcome to hifiguides. Unfortunately your set-up does not do the clear mg justice whatsoever. It is quite brave of you to take the plunge for an endgame headphone straight from a consumer oriented model. Synergy becomes more and more important in the higher end stuff as you will come to learn. It is not just about power.

Well I don’t have a headphone jack adapter to plug it straight to my pc so I’ll have to buy one and report back. There is no distortion or problem with the Focal when they’re connected to my current setup, but they’re just quiet and I’m not noticing this audio clarity upgrade. It’s only when I raise the gains on the amp that I notice distortion and this doesn’t happen with the Crossfade M100 which technically in comparison are horrible compared to the Focals and yet they sound better. I don’t mind spending more on a different amp dac combo, was thinking of getting the Schiit Magnius and Modius but I don’t know who’s fault is it in this case.
