šŸ”¶ Focal Clear Mg

If it was me, I’d send it back.
I got a memory foam mattress that was suppose to be endgame.
It had so many chemicals pumped into it that I sent it back after the minimum 30 day trial. On day 31 of the 100 day trial run, it had to go. Stunk my whole house up.

You have a really nice setup overall.
This hobby, as anything in life, is all about trial and error.
Try many amps, dacs, HPs, cables until you find a great fit for you.

I had to scroll back up to double check that you got the Pro Mg, because that hasn’t been my experience with the non-Pro. The cables are still rubber, but other than the lengths, I have no real complaints about them. Weird how there can be that much of a difference between the two. Having said that, I’ve still put in an order with Hart for a custom cable.

Ha ha, we weren’t talking about Clear’s cable at all. Bruiser brought up a completely different thread discussing this cable. Sorry for the confusion.

For anyone wondering, this cable is NOT fabric. It’s a sticky rubber material. lol I know it looks like fabric but it’s not.

that is extremely misleading and very glad focal doesn’t come with it lol

In the reflections, you can somewhat make out the fabric is inside some tube. Weird material.

I wasn’t a fan of the Aeolus (but I did enjoy the Eikon). From memory, the Aeolus and MG are leagues apart, imo. The MG is so neutral, but still engaging. Mostly due to its dynamics I think. The Aeolus was just too soft of a presentation for me. Not enough technical merits for the price, but I can see how it’s popular. Especially on tubes (really essential for ZMF).

The Clear MG is just a very good headphone that truly scales with source. I like them enough to be seriously considering this amp:

I’m glad to see most are enjoying their new MG’s.

Cheers.

Fuck. I mean, I truly love my Aeolus…but damn…

I’ll throw my 2 cents in here about the discussion on AMP/DAC dependancies…

I only have a simple Schiit Magni Heresy and Modi 3+ stack to use on my Clear MG Pro’s. To my ears, they sound incredible! So I don’t have anything to compare them to but I definitely would not call it bad or disappointing.

I am hoping my Magnius/Modius will ship next week and then I can finally sample these on balanced. I’m guessing I am going to like that sound also though.

I love the MG Pro’s. I’ve had so much fun throwing different music at them that I’ve listened to for years just to hear things for the first time that makes me go ā€œwowā€

Just being honest that my Aeolus will probably be collecting dust after A/B’ing the Clear MG and Aeolus for hours today.

Want a second?

I feel like upgrading the Modi to a Bifrost (using the Heresy) would yield better results than the Modius/Magnius. I owned the Modius and liked it (probably the best AKM DAC I’ve heard), but the Bifrost is much better, imo.

The Magni os no slouch, either. I’ve heard it referred to as a ā€œpalette cleanserā€ because it’s so clean and neutral. It’s actually a very good amp, and the Clear do scale, but they’re also very efficient. Heresy Single-Ended is plenty of power.

Just some thoughts.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your MGs, they’re pretty awesome.

Have you heard the Bifrost? If I had to do it all over again, I would have skipped the Bifrost and stuck with the SMSL SU-9. I think they are both good DACs but the SU-9 has a lot more features and sounds slightly more technical than the Bifrost.

Thanks man, appreciate the feedback on that. Yeah I have the Bitfrost now on my radar for the future. I’ll give the Magnius/Modius some time first to see what I think. Funny…I got into this hobby in December 2019 and bought my Magni/Modi and now here I am about 1 year or so later already upgrading to the Magnius/Modius.

Honestly surprised with that result, to me the bifrost is a solid step ahead in timbre, spatial recreation, dynamics, and microdetail, about equally quick as the su9 though

I am more interested to see these new products schiit has in development… quite expensive but still

I have a few times while at the Schiitr (probably about 3 hours total). It’s a very good DAC that competes with higher tiered DACs. Imo, you probably have to spend double to start to get better performance.

No problem. I wasn’t implying the Modius isn’t good, I actually owned it for a few months. I bought an RME ADI 2 Pro FS-R to replace the Modius thinking it would be better. It honestly wasn’t to my ears. The staging on the RME was very flat and 2-dimensional. It had better technicalities than the Modius as far as detail, and maybe separation, but the custom filter Schiit uses was much more organic than the RME. The Modius was just a more natural and fun listen.

Looking forward to your impressions.

Same. I want them all!

The CD transport (confirmed) and Gumby 2 (rumored) are my most wanted, but the Loki Maximus is also appealing.

And the 10 tube amp should be fun.

I’ve had the Bifrost for a few weeks and haven’t compared back and forth directly but these are my feelings listening with it since it arrived. I’m not bashing the Bifrost, it sounds good but I just don’t hear much of a difference between it and the SU-9, yet the SU-9 has wireless, volume control, led screen and filtering options. The Bifrost is either on or off.

I value your opinion concerning amps and dacs more than just about anyone so I’ll believe you when you say the Bifrost is an improvement over the SU-9 but I’m not hearing it, at least for the music I enjoy.
