šŸ”¶ Focal Clear

I tried liking these, but they are shouty AF. Bass and highs are good, clarity is good and so is the detail.
I had them for a day and could not stand listening to them for more than 20 minutes.
Additionally since my head is so wide, they were one of the most uncomfortable headphone iā€™ve ever owned. The pressure they exerted on my jawbones and temple was significant - as a reference i find the same is true for the Hifiman Sundara and HD6xx
If you also have a big head and value comfort, these are not for you.

They went back the same day.

I am much happier with the Denon D9200 and HD800 i replaced them with for roughly the same price (together) as the Clear.

Iā€™ve had my Clears for a week now and wanted to give some of my first impressions. For my equipment, Iā€™m running PC USB > OL DAC > RebelAmp. Music is a mix of CD rips on Foobar and Amazon music HD for streaming.

Some background: I donā€™t have much experience with audiophile headphones. First high end pair for me was an HD700 (used for a couple years with a subpar setup) then an Elear early this year. I switched from the HD700 to the Elear because I couldnā€™t listen to the HD700 for more than 30 minutes without getting a headache. They were far too harsh for me. I loved the detail and soundstage and I donā€™t imagine anything is more comfortable, but itā€™s not worth it if I couldnā€™t bear listening to them. I was really happy switching to the Elear and sold the HD700.

I generally enjoyed the Elear, but couldnā€™t help feeling that they sounded kind of off. I play Apex with a buddy and constantly complained that I couldnā€™t pinpoint anyoneā€™s location; the soundstage/imaging felt blurry and inaccurate. In general I felt like I was missing something; letā€™s not even take into account the fact that most people bash the Elear for being terrible.

Now to last week when the Clear arrived: immediately after putting them on and listening, I couldnā€™t help but think I just blew $1,500 for a different colored Elear as they sounded the sameā€¦at first. The sonic signature is very Focal with detailed mids and good bass, but I feel like the treble is where they really focused on these. I know the HD700 gets a lot of crap as well, but the Clear brings back that level of detail that I miss from them - albeit without the headache that came along with it.

I finally understand what people mean when they say a headphone is ā€œrevealing.ā€ The Clears will tell you definitively if youā€™re listening to a well recorded track or not. Taylor Swiftā€™s new album, Folklore, was one of the first albums I listened to again with these. Iā€™m not great at picking out the nuanced differences between equipment, but this sounded detailed, spacious, and just beautiful in comparison. I think the Clear really lends itself to acoustically focused music. By contrast, New Elysium (Celldweller), Hanger 18 (Megadeth), and, frankly, a lot of the rock in my playlist, left me disappointed. Itā€™s not that they sound bad, but you donā€™t get that ā€œhearing it again for the first timeā€ feeling.

Iā€™ve only tried comparing the two once since Iā€™m trying to focus on the Clear to let my ears adjust. Iā€™ll probably give it at least a couple more weeks with the Clear, then switch back to the Elear to see if I find any other differences between the two.

Bottom line - weā€™re looking at the law of diminishing returns here. Donā€™t buy the Clear thinking youā€™re getting a 3-5x better Elear (or Elegia for that matter - from the little Iā€™ve listed they sound very similar to the Elear). Iā€™ve compared my Elear to an Ether Flow and Aeon and prefered the Elear by a longshot, so I wouldnā€™t say theyā€™re a bad headphone. If you have the cash and want that extra detail and accuracy, Iā€™d say the Clear is more than worth it - it definitely is for me.

Love seeing the Rebel Amp mentioned. And anyone who stands by the Elear has to be my kind of person, grin.

That said, if you ever try pad swapping the Clear ear pads on to the Elear just as an experiment, Iā€™d be interested to hear what the result is. Iā€™ve heard about using Elex pads, but I donā€™t recall hearing anything about the effect of the Clear pads.

I am not sure why but I read that ā€œreviewā€ and it was the most meaningless bunch of words about headphones I have ever seen. But whatever I enjoy my clears and I believe thatā€™s what matter in this hobby.

This description was super helpful. I was curious about getting a Clear when I saw a trade-in set for sale at a good price, but after reading what you wrote, it doesnā€™t mesh with my preferences at all.

@MaynardGK I really like the RebelAmp. I havenā€™t had any other headphone amps to compare it too, but I like the big green look, itā€™s dead silent on all my headphones, and it sounds good to me. I had thought about doing a pad swap, Iā€™ll definitely try it and let you know.

I think measurements have their place, but basing your entire recommendation on them seems excessive. Only thing I agree with Amir on is that Focal cables are pretty shit functionally.

@Pelontar glad someone found the wall of text helpful. I could see how theyā€™re not for everyone. Hell, I might keep my Elear as a more relaxed alternative to the Clear as I could see the detail and resolution being a bit too much depending on my mood.

@M0N are you still all about these for a dynamic at the price point? I see you no longer have yours, just curiousā€¦

Yeah I still really like them given you have an amp to properly drive one, the reason I sold them was because I decided to move to a utopia again (for the 2nd time) and didnā€™t want to have multiple focal

Right on thank you

guys do these come with a balanced cable? crap, is it 2.5mm connectors?

Yes, they actually come with three cables: 6.35mm single ended, XLR balanced, and a shorter 3.5mm cable.

Even the black and red the clear professional?

No. The Clear pro comes with a 6.35 coiled cable and a shorter 3.5 black cable. On the other side the pros come with an extra pair of pads.

ok thank you, just wanted to make sure so i could order one

I ordered a custom 4.4. I prefer the extra set of pads over the XLR that comes with Clear (to stiff anyway). Also prefer the color scheme
