šŸ”· Focal Elegia

Well apparently, so does Focal!

EDIT: Oh and hopefully this discourages owners from trying to change the clamping force, at least with the normal headband.

So my impressions of these might be slightly different than most people’s lol. Just a warming. Either way compared to the elex the elegia def has a very similar sound signature and presentation. Must b the focal house sound. Ultimately if you need a close back or don’t have a super higher tier amp but want an elex I think the elegia is very comparable. It’s much more chill than the elex which can be good, sounds more natural imo since the mids aren’t crazy forward in comparison to the elex and has less dynamics for sure. I would say the main difference that makes the elex better is the crazy ridiculous amount of dynamics lol. But for the most part so far I’m preferring the elegia as a more chill and more natural version of the elex.

Ps. I’m surprised by comments that find the elegia bass light or thin at all

I agree with your impressions a lot. The bass is neutral, but I wouldn’t call them bass shy. Pad seal is so important for proper bass on the elegia. I think for people who wear glasses, that may be the issue. I consider the Elegia neutral/mid forward but definitely more laid back compared to the Clears/Elex.

Your impressions are really inline with what i hear as well… glad you’re liking them :+1:

I ended up preferring these over the clears for the same reason

@Hazi59 @donjklassen interesting to hear, very good to know. And yeah about the pad seal, you must be right since the bass is super proper on the elegia. I’m enjoying the bass alot. Interesting to hear that it’s more laid back than the clears too.

very very interesting lol

Ill make sure to give updates on my thoughts on these!

I must say, it’s kinda difficult to find stuff to mention lol. It’s a simple headphone so far. It’s pretty dang intimate, I think since the 58x this is my first headphone that has been this intimate. The vocals are nice and forward but the Soundstage in general is pretty narrow. Definitely dosent feel like as much of an experience like with the hawks where it has a pretty good Soundstage (depth and width) or the elex. The stage feels narrow, there also dosent seem to be alot of depth but does have excellent layering and imaging. Everything has its own spot and it’s pretty spacious within the small stage. Timbre is pretty good, bass is nice and punchy, treble is surprisingly forward altho not too much, mids are as well. Most of my recent headphones have been really balanced but this might be the most balanced headphone when you factor in that it has the right amount of dynamics to not bee too in your face, pleasant presentation and pleasant sound signature. It all feels just right. Me likey.

One surprise is that in certain calm songs like pelota by khruangbin the elegia dosent seem particularly fast and the sound is very relaxing however it adapts to recordings like crazy since with other music like ė‚Æģ„ ģ•„ģ“ - 섬 the pace picks up, the dynamics kick up and it sounds waaaay more upbeat. Almost like a different headphone lol. I don’t think the speed reaches like elex level speed but it’s pretty impressive still. Same story with other stuff where los bukis sound really pleasant and chill but then I put Die Antwoord and it’s much more fun and aggressive. That’s been the only pretty big surprise since the hawks generally sound the same no matter what they play (chill) and the elex always sounds super engaging and never relaxing ime. Besides that the sound sig seems pretty simple and straight forward.

I’m telling you man, 2 songs that sound amazing on the elegia are ā€œInterstate Love Songā€ by Stone Temple Pilots, and ā€œBreakdownā€ by Tantric. They really do a good job of highlighting what the Elegia do so well as far as sound signature is concerned.

Ah shit I forgot to check em out lol. I’ll make sure to remember TONIGHT! lol

Oh man, off topic but I saw Tantric back in like 2001 lol, you just opened up a memory in the back of my brain I totally forgot about. It was a good show!

I used to listen to them a lot when going on my runs when I was in the Marines stationed at Quantico, VA.

Thanks - would totally take advantage if I hadn’t decided to go down the E-MU Teak path. Now sitting on a week where they have printed my shipping but still haven’t sent it out :frowning:

Is there a way to increase the soundstage on the Focal Elegia?
What kind of amp were you using?

I actually find the soundstage to be decently wide on the elegia and I don’t really see it improving as it doesn’t seem to change much on different amps… going from the asgard 3 to a liquid spark sounds about the same imo… maybe a tiny bit more open

Are they your favourite closed backs?

After 2 months of steady Elegia listening and completely turning around from my initial thoughts to not use EQ, the Elegia sounds 100% better with EQ. My settings are milder than what I have seen of other peoples but still impactful. There you have it, first impressions are great, first impression suck.

I am fortunate enough to have two closed backs that imo compliment each other very well… these and the Sony z7… can’t pick a favourite really but for now the 2 cover my closed back needs handily :+1:

youre still looking for a closed back right? I think these are worth considering for sure… especially because you already know you like the focal sound… and especially at the sale price lol

completely agree lol what are you EQing out of curiosity?

I think many people confuse soundstage with how open something sounds…they are different things but can be easily confused.

The elegia have an intimate/narrow soundstage, but are amongst the most open sounding closed back headphones I’ve personally ever heard.

That’s a very good point actually and what I should’ve said is that I like the staging and not that it’s particularly wide. Always learning I suppose. It’s really apparent the open vs wide thing when I listen to the Elegia and Sundara back to back. Not that the Sundara is wide but the difference you’re mentioning became very obvious to me. The Elegia has really great imaging and a surrounding presentation that really makes me appreciate their staging capability whereas the Sundara has a more typical linear staging (with good depth as well) making the far left and right seem further away which is also very nice.

I used to have the Z7’s but sold them after a few months. Do you find the Elegia’s much more clear and exact? Do they sound a bit exaggerated like the Elex’s?

Where did you buy yours’?
