šŸ”· Focal Elegia

yeah, audio is a very subjective story. I prefer an eqā€™d 100ā‚¬ DT770 over an eqā€™d 400ā‚¬ DT1990 or an eqā€™d 50ā‚¬ Tin T2 over a 100ā‚¬ moondrop starfield.

I am thinking to sell my Elegia and switch to IEM.

Anyone knows if there is similar sound quality IEM? I was hoping to be able to wear Elegia at night and for longer session. But it leaks sound a bit and clamp force is a little too hard for me.

JVC HA-FDX1 might be worth looking into. as iā€™ve owned the elegia and the JVC i found both to have similiar qualities.

@alphamarshan with glasses was it just comfort was the issue or bad changes in FR ?

Many other glasses wearerā€™s with the Elegiaā€™s, how do you find them?
Iā€™ve not actually come across a set of headphones that are noticeably affected by my glasses in terms of FR, just got used to any comfort issues myself. My main drivers are 1990ā€™s also using 770ā€™s, K712Pro, Gradoā€™s.

There is a slight reduction in the upper-bass/lower-mid region to my ears with glasses. Whether or not that bothers you is something only you can answer. If you have a DAC or amp with a bass boost then this difference is pretty much erased. I donā€™t have much comfort issue with them. The pads are pretty soft and for the most part mold around the arms of the glasses.

@darylc Wave is pretty much on point here. This is my exact experience. Thereā€™s a bit of a divide it seems on this but I think the Elegia work excellently on a warmer dac like an IFI Hip Dac or Zen Dac, especially with the Xbass on.

@WaveTheory @Gravitas Cool, yea that sounds fine really, donā€™t do eq with headphones as itā€™s just a further rabbit hole to dive into
The plan is for RNHP / Bifrost2 with these and or potentially Clears which seems to get good praise. Wouldnā€™t mind a closedback though for the moment

@darylc
Iā€™m guessing that in this particular set of folks, I may be the most recent first-time Elegia owner. I too had concerns revolving around being a ā€œglasses wearerā€, after I had read some reviews and comments. I can say this, that I do not perceive any differences with, or without my glasses on but, mine are thin frames and YMMV.

I was fortunate to have an opportunity to pick up a set from a member in this very group, and it was an ear-opening experience. I thoroughly enjoy them. So much so, that I bought a second pair for the office. I find them comfortable, not too heavy, and not too warm on the ears.

Not trying to convince you one way or another. Just sharing my relatively recent experience FWIW.

Edit:
For context I am using them with ZenDac/Modius + Asgard 3 and Atom DAC/amp and I think they sound noticeably better with the Zen/Schiit combo than the Atom - but I like a warmer signature.

I will second that, I donā€™t have a bass boost (Element II here). I could not perceive a significant difference with glasses on, so YMMV. But I think if you have EQ capabilities and/or bass boost, youā€™re guaranteed to see no problem.

The Elegia is really great on the RNHP. And the BF2 is known to be a great dac to pair with the RNHP so I think you would be very happy with that setup. The Clears are on my list to try at some point as well.

Yup, YMMV for sure. I tried several different pairs of glasses and for whatever reason as SOON as I broke that seal of the pads I noticed a significant drop in bass. I have an EQ but it just didnā€™t have the same slam and so yeah, great headphones but just didnā€™t work for me.

Well if youā€™re interested, I think Iā€™m selling mine. I got them at the beginning of the week to audition between it and the DT770 pad swapped with the Dekoni leather. They sound amazing, but I got them for work, and I mainly listen to Electronica at work, and to me these just donā€™t cut it for that purpose.

Hey guys I have this weird problem, and Iā€™m not sure how to fix it.

Basically on only the right side of my Elegias, at high frequencies, the sound distorts the higher you crank the volume enough volumes. This only happens on my Windows 10 computer, and not on my iPhone or laptop.

I have tried everything! It is not the Amp and DACs fault because any other headphone or speaker doesnā€™t have this problem through that source. Also it is not my cables fault, I have 3 different cables for the Elegia and all of them have the same exact problem on only the right side. And I know the actual headphones themselves are not broken because on my iPhone and laptop this is not a problem.

Has this BS ever happended to anyone else and would anyone have a way to fix this?

Have you tried to use a different headphone on your computer? I think its windows

Have many people had these long term?
I have read dozens and dozens of glowing reviews, but then almost every single one of those people have gone on to sell them.
Just curious who has had them more than a year and has no plans to sell them?

Thanks.

Theyā€™re a gateway headphone. Theyā€™re good enough to show you what youā€™ve been missing by hanging out in the entry-level/mid-fi realm but lacking just enough to make you thirsty for more. At least thatā€™s what happened to me. I had Edition XX and then heard Elegia. 3 months later I have HexV2, LCD2PF, A level 3 Lawton modded Fostex, and a Bifrost 2. I still have my Elegia. Itā€™s not been a year though.

Sold off my Elegia after two months of ownership. I didnā€™t like the timbre or the FR (primarily the upper mids/lower treble) of the Elex when I reviewed them. I think the timbre of the Elegia is a little better than the Elex but I also didnā€™t like its FR. When EQā€™ing the Elegia, some of the recommended EQ settings introduced some grating resonances in its upper mids/lower treble. By my ears, I adjusted the region around 3kHz and 6kHz (IIRC) to my liking, but I still wasnā€™t enamored with its sound. I sold it off recently and the person who I sold to turned around and sold it again a few days after receiving it. :man_shrugging:

I just think that my ears do not like Focalā€™s house sound. YMMV.

Iā€™m a few months into owning them and I have no plans of selling them in the near future. They do have a somewhat lean sound compared to some other headphones but they are a great complement to my Hawks for that exact reason. 2 very different sounds. Also the dynamics are addicting for me. I think @WaveTheory is onto something about the gateway thing. Their accessibility at closeout prices made it possible for some of us to own a higher tier headphone than we would have previously been able to afford. For those of us that enjoy the sound signature, our ears have been opened to the capabilities of the higher tiers. For better or for worse.

Hi. After some trial and error turns out it was my amp. Hopefully getting it replaced! Thanks

Iā€™m in the same boat as those who like them and then donā€™t. For about the first month I loved them. Now theyā€™re annoying. I donā€™t know why. Tried all sorts of equalization, different amps, etc. I WANT to like them but somethingā€™s just off and I canā€™t figure out what.
