šŸ”· Focal Elegia

Anything in particular you didnā€™t like? Or just didnā€™t sound good with your music collection?

Glasses user. But even without glasses I couldnā€™t get it to seal. It was super fidgety. I know it sounds like an echo chamber on what others have said about Focal stuff but metallic was the best way to describe it. Very detailed and dynamic without a doubt and build quality minus the cable was very nice. I experienced very little bass. There was some sub bass with no glasses but not much. I wanted to love it due to build, comfort and the case but couldnā€™t. For 400 plus bucks itā€™s gotta be better for me. Obviously Iā€™m in the minority or Iā€™ve got a funny shaped head.

The sheepskins improved the seal but seemed to boost treble and slightly the bass. Less comfort as dekoni foam is harder. They increase clamp force. If they improved the sound Iā€™d be ok with the comfort though.

I second what @Pr3ssAltF4 said. The Dragonfly will drive them just fine, I was using it for a little while and it sounds good. I recently switched to the Hip Dac for portable use because I like the synergy between the two better than the Dragonfly. The Dragonfly sound is a little more crisp and analytical, but the Hip Dac smoothes things out and warms things up which I think benefits the Elegia sound. Plus the Xbass button has your back if you want to add a little more low end rumble on demand. Really nice option for some songs.

Yeah that makes sense. I saw on reviews the DCA Aeon 2 Closed have a lot of give with the pads, maybe that would be a nicer fit for glasses. Also I found a great chi-fi pad company that makes much softer sheepskin pads than even ZMFā€™s oval line if youā€™re looking for good generic oval pads.

Thatā€™s great to hear, Hip Dac is at a very nice price point, Iā€™ll have to look into it more for these

Iā€™m tempted to grab a second one. Theyā€™re damn good, and $429 is a ridiculous steal. Literal highway robbery.

Do it.

Any chance these are a little more laid back and not as amp picky (aka would work well with an Asgard 3) as the clear? I think it was the dynamics I didnā€™t particularly care for that made them fatiguing for me. For the price I canā€™t justify keeping them. These at 429 have me curious.

Iā€™ve never heard the Clears, but the Elegiaā€™s are compared to them quiet often. They are not known for being amp specific so should pair well with most things you can throw them on. One youtube review I watched on them was saying with some EQ they were able to get the Elegiaā€™s to sound pretty close to the Clearā€™s.

I havenā€™t tried messing with EQ but these have been nice so far for me, still waiting on a balanced cable though is all haha.

I tried Resolveā€™s EQ settings, which was a variation of RTINGā€™s target curve. His settings for 4.5kHz and 8kHz exacerbated resonances around that upper mids region (e.g. tambourine jingles), which led to ringing to my ears, and thus, listening fatigue. Lowering a few db from there eliminated the issue. Lowering it too much would leave that region sounding a bit hollow. Everything else about his EQ with a few additional modifications in surrounding frequencies sounded really good.

What EQ program do you use? Something you can export for newbs like me to import and try? lol

Hi,

I use Peace, a front-end for EqualizerAPO (both free) (there are quite a few install guides on YT). I also posted my EQ settings and adjusted 4.5kHz, 8kHz, and 11.5kHz gains to suit my taste.

A quick first impression - Probably worth the sale price. Not work the list price. Sounds a tad thin. Lacking a bit of texture timbre-wise.

Easy to power. Quite loud when the buttons glow red on the Chord Mojo if youā€™re familiar with that.

This is a good enough headphone to stop noticing any shortcomings if you just stop criticizing and get into the music. (There are some where this is not the case for me at least and Iā€™ll let distracted by what Iā€™m hearing)

Iā€™m not exactly a bass-head but I feel like Iā€™m wanting for Bass with these.

Seal and noise isolation is pretty damn good considering Iā€™ve heard claims that these are ā€œsemi-closedā€ I just about donā€™t buy it. I can hardly hear my own voice when I have them on with no music.

In my personal humble opinion (and already having a really great pair of open-back cans) I would take these over the clears at sale price for the noise isolation, and Iā€™d take the Elex at $600 over both of them for the sake of those crazy dynamics and the bass response.

Final note: these ultimately donā€™t seem like a ā€œfunā€ pair of headphones. I would recommend these to my audio industry working friends. Then Iā€™d take the Elex for myself for that cocaine sound.

All my personal opinion and just first impression without burn in. My brain is most used to the ZMF Verite as a reference.

It IS addictiveā€¦

Hmmm. What are you amping them with? These bring out the bass if the track has it in my experience.

Iā€™m having zero issues with bass over here with them via the iFi xDSD, my phone, and my Gilmore. The only thing that has issues driving these things is my Q1.

I would 110% call these fun headphones. Theyā€™re not super natural and sound slightly thin, but they are dynamic, bassy, punchy, and are ever so slightly brighter than neutral.

Comparing these to the verite is pretty unfair. Literally totl closed back lol.

Okay got this today, so I only have like ~3 hours of listening but I really like these. My only closed backs are Audiotechnica ATH-M50x and Sennheiser HD280 Pros for reference. Desktop is Asgard 3 and Topping E30.

First thing that stands out to me is I think this is the first headphone where I can clearly tell if something is poorly recorded. Generally I couldnā€™t really tell with any of my headphones, but these definitely sound off on some songs compared to everything else Iā€™ve listened to thus far. Kind of weird listening to some favorite songs of mine and being likeā€¦ ā€œew, this sounds like bad qualityā€

Other than that, the next thing is the vocal clarity on these. Definitely seems mid-forward to me and male vocals especially are very nice to listen to and has a ā€˜fullā€™ sound to them.
Bass is nothing spectacular for quantity, but it is very punchy. Sub-bass and notes that are extremely low donā€™t come through all that wellā€¦ almost doesnā€™t exists. Maybe you can fix that with EQ, but I havenā€™t tried at all. If you like punchy bass I think these fit that quite well.
Iā€™m not exactly sure how to explain the treble on these. I donā€™t want to say it is harsh, because it isnā€™t, but it feels bright on certain songs in particular. It sounds good though. Just listened to ā€œBest Partā€ by Daniel Caesar and H.E.R. and it sounded honestly amazing with the harmonies they pull off on it. Almost angelic.
Imaging seems to be much better than I expected on these. Soundstage just seems okay but I donā€™t really have a good grasp for it yet.

I feel like Iā€™m rambling now, but yeah I really like these. Even though they are closed, they donā€™t really sound it - it still has really exceptional sound. Has some leakage, but it is pretty minimal. Although I donā€™t hear any outside sounds with these on my head. For the sale price, I definitely think these are worth it. Full price? Ehhh maybe a bit much. I personally enjoy more bass than what these provide, but for certain genres these are extremely fun to listen to. With that being said, I feel like I really want to try/get the Elex now after reading about how that sounds.

Thanks for reading!
