đŸ”¶ Focal Elex

So that driver i took out of the elex to replace works after swapping in the magnet I had on my wall. haha.
It could have very well just needed to be cleaned up a bit, to get it loosened and free moving too
but I figured to swap the magnet, since I was taking it apart anyway. Works perfectly now. Extends fully into the low end as it should and sounds right.

You seem to be so handy with these headphones! Any opinion on modding the focal headphones to have swiveling earcups? Or even some kind of modding to put the “speakers” onto a different headband altogether?

Have you ever measured how loud you listen? I bought a cheap audio meter from Amazon because I thought I might listen too loud. Turns out my average range is 65db’s to 75db’s with the odd bump into high 70’s. But I never go past 11:00 in low gain with anything.

That’s a good range to be in

I have tried a free app on the phone, what the best method A, B, C or Z weighted?

I’m okay
just dumb enough to open up and mess around with expensive headphones. Lol
I modified my Clears a bit.

Unfortunately, the headband is pretty stubbornly designed. It’s not friendly to modification at all in any sort of non-destructive sense. The monoprice Monolith m1070 and m1570 appear to use the same headband though, with different padding, so maybe if you could figure out where those are sourced. Maybe check Ali Express.

I have no idea. I just ordered this:

Then I cut up a piece of cardboard wide enough to cover an ear pad and cut a small hole in the middle. I put the tip of the meter through the hole in the cardboard and measure the sound.

Not sure how scientifically accurate it is, but I find it interesting.

Ah I see
so I’m guessing those go into swiveling speaker housings? But would those housings hold the drivers from the Elex?

How do these compare to the AKG 712 pros? would it be an upgrade from? or just different all together

Pretty good upgrade imo. They might sound a bit more intimate at first comparing to the k712, but they actually do extend out just as wide, but only do so when the music suits it. I think the elex is a bit more neutral but still somewhat slightly w shaped for sound. I think the elex is more detailed and has better spatial recreation than the 712. Also the elex has better dynamics imo. Overall I would def pick the elex over the 712 for myself. Also the elex is a bit easier to drive as well

Do companies ever do silent revisions where they replace the wires?

Yes, but if it’s the headphone cable I don’t know if I would call it a silent revision

No, i think you would want to stick with the housing designed for the driver. The acoustics are very important to the sound.

How long do pads usually last, and how long would you expect the pads for the Elex to last?

It depends on the pads and how clean you are when you wear them lol. I would say for focal most likely about 1-2 years if you daily drove them

Anyone notice how the Elex has an “M” shaped driver and a “W” shaped sound signature? Hmmmm, coincidence?

my god, i never realized

If you buy a used pair of these, does the warranty transfer over?

A pair of Dekoni Pads?

If that’s what you’re asking, I don’t know. But just don’t mention it if you have to make a warranty claim.
