šŸ”· Fostex TH900

After that, honestly the ltd turnings might make a good bit of sense imo, but so could the regular 900 lol. The ltd would be closer to a combination of the eikon and awkt where the th900 would be more different than that

I’ve liked it with things like a pass hpa-1, a luxman p750u, bryston bha-1, and more hard to find options after that lol. I do think it can be pretty enjoyable on some tube designs as well, something like a lta mz2 + lps or mz3 is nice, modwright ha300 (or cayin ha300 for that matter), an allnic hpa-3000 gt, something from eddie current, and other options. Although this isn’t factoring anything dac wise

@M0N 's reply nails it for me as well… I have a Pearl White, and also 909 (I know the discussion is including OG 900, not 909) but all in all the TH900mk2 Pear White is outstanding and ā€œfeelsā€ a bit more sophisticated with the smoother more ā€œbalancedā€ signature while still being fun leaning. I like it for modern Jazz/Jazz Fusion, Funk and progressive variants. Where I want that fun but also want to enjoy the more natural (to my ears) timber and textures of instruments like saxophones/horns, drums, keys, and vocals, male/female.

The 909, though not quite the same as the OG (haven’t heard but tempted to buy) is definitely more ā€œfunā€ to me bass is more prominent with some sacrifice of textural quality mids are not as forward but for me that makes things like electric guitars etc more enjoyable. I like these phones for Rock, progressive rock, electronic mainstream pop/rock blues etc.
I don’t personally find the treble to get too harsh - though, it certainly points a finger at ā€œpoorā€ recordings.

Edit: I was not paying attention to the ongoing conversation. My bad sorry for interruption.

Yeah I don’t either on the 909, but it can happen on the 900, the 909 hasn’t done that for me personally. The treble on the 900 is more elevated as well compared to the 909. The 909 feels slightly inbetween a ltd tuning and a regular 900 with some specific quirks as well

I guess still need to pick up a stock 900mk2… and just admit it for real, I am a fanboy! lol
seriously I really, really enjoy these phones with their own distinctions between versions without mods. I am not a good person for objective value add.

Well crap  now to figure out which to pick.

Would my amps work fine with fostex? I mean better that with awkt :stuck_out_tongue:

Better than the awkt yes lol

I have been working both the 909 and 900mk2 pearl white with a soekris dac1541 + Violectric V281 primarily.

Unfortunately, I have nothing in the caliber of amplifiers that M0N suggested but I looked at your bio page and gear list - if it is current, I saw a Liquid Plat and Bifrost 2 mentioned. I have a BF2 and LP - though currently running a set of Amperex PQ gold pins and not sure how close those are to the Tesla NOS you have, or what I have in inventory that I could swap in that might be similar but, I will do a proper listening session later with the BF2 → LP → TH900mk2 pearl white and chime in with my thoughts for what they may be worth.

Thanks man much appreciated. I think i am chasing my tail with electronics so far. But I might upgrade in the future once I settle with hp I want to keep.

But still not pairings that would do them justice?

Yeah figuring out what you really want to go for is a good idea

So you currently have your burson and your plat correct? I think that would do a good job with those. Of course they aren’t on the same caliber of what I mentioned previously, but I think with the burson you should be able to get a pretty satisfactory experience, and the th900 on the plat ain’t bad either imo

@M0N

Asking for a friend, but what would be the minimum setup for the TH900? Mainly to deliver an articulate sub bass and retain the air up top, and not to overly change the sound signature

He’s been in the budgetary territory, best amp he’s tried is Asgard 3 I think but he finds it a bit too sloppy in the bass and overly too warm without enough treble

Wow - I had forgotten how good the TH900mk2pw sounds when working from the BF2 + LP.
Bifrost 2 (Unison USB), balanced out into the LP, and balanced headphone out using a balanced (Oidio) cable with the TH900mk2pw.

I only intended to listen to a couple tracks from some known favorites on playlists and some fav albums/tracks from my local library but I’ve spent the better part of the afternoon listening. Several complete albums end to end, and I’ve lost count of the single track picks, all across various genre.

Needless to say, I’ve found the TH900mk2 quite enjoyable with the setup listed above. The LP certainly has more than enough to give, my volume ranged from 7-7:30 to no more than 8, the latter being about as loud as I could take lol. Staging, details, timbre, low and high extension, dynamics, slam all very good - a pretty decent combo (dac/amp/hp) synergy wise. I am actually going to leave the TH900mk2 on this desk and source for a while, to force my butt over here more often for listening sessions with this setup.

I am curious. Th900 is on the way I picked sapphire blue. But how come bryston come often in your recommendation with picks twice that expensive like pass? Is it that good? How does it compare to something like my soloist?

Alternatives since I know not everyone wants to or can spend as much on something like the pass

As good as let’s say the pass? No, but it is less expensive, and still an enjoyable combo so I mention it as another option, didn’t mean to imply it was on the same level

Personally I’d say it’s on a bit higher level in some aspects to the soloist, but it’s not a massive overall leap forward from a soloist 3xp. Generally I’d say the soloist and bryston have similar quality punch and impact, control and grip, but I think the bryson handles lower level info and also microdynamics a bit better than the soloist, with a bit more coherent stage as well, slightly better timbre. But that being said the soloist is more neutral and balanced sounding, and isn’t too far off, I’d end up saying it’s on a semi similar tier but I would favor the bryston a bit as long as you didn’t mind a warmer thicker signature vs the burson

Interesting and very informative as always. I really like the look of pass.

But need to stability in headphones first.

I was very excited while reading your write up on high end dacs so maybe I will wait till you do the that lower level and go after something from there. And amp to complement it nicely.

Will definitely reach to out as always about best synergy for what I will have in collection.

But who knows so far I was not very stable but at least I know some combinations I like already.

Congratulations! :headphones:

Just a few hours of owning them and listening, but this is pretty fucking epic
Have to grab balanced cable to try them on MLP but Burson drives them pretty nicely.

Also my wife was like ā€œThose are very niceā€ and had them for two hours strait and comparing to Clear. She can pick her favoirtes :man_facepalming:
