🔷 Fostex TR-X00 Ebony

I really like the bass on these headphones, very well done for sure

I find it’s just that they sound “”“MUSICAL”"". By that I mean they have warm fun bass, slightly recessed but still present mids, and elevated but never harsh treble. Basically they focus on a fun and enjoyable sound that I feel works for most kinds of music. My purple hearts make me both question the need to upgrade and simultaneously want to see how much better something like a ZMF supposedly is. I really hope massdrop get a new Fostex biodina collaboration.

I think the Zmf headphones uses and higher quality Bio dynamic driver than the Fostex TR-X00’s

Some of the zmf headphones have biodynas and some don’t I believe. I my verite uses a beryllium driver (I am pretty sure as it sounds like one lol)

I think it’s beryllium infused (20%) bio driver.

Yeah the Aeolus uses a TPE driver, the Auteur uses Bio dyna, and the Verite uses Beryllium.

OK! ive been at the Lawton website examining their mods for this headphone. And wow it sounds really good. I was thinking of just getting the level 1 tuneup for 89$ They say this doesnt change the sound but improves it.

They want to charge 89$ more for their angled pads. Seems a bit much for pads. Do they improve the sound that much? if not i’ll just stick to my stock pads.

Also im not sure if i should go for the level 2. first its expensive and 2nd it seems the wood chambers change the sound. anyone got any insight into this?

I’ve barely begun my mod and I haven’t received my cups yet. From everything I’ve been told and have read, the Lawton pads are so,so.

The popular pads seem to be the ZMF offerings. The Ori, and Auteur in particular.

I ordered the Ori Lambskins. I figured it was a good starting point.

My cups are due to ship in about 2-3 weeks.

why did you go for the wood cups?

I’ve done the driver side of the tune-up and you are correct in saying it does not change the sound, only improve it. The biggest change I have noticed so far is the separation of sound.

For pads if you haven’t tried them I would recommend the accessory house global pads. Basically just stock pads with better comfort (leather and memory foam). Ori lambskin pads are good (especially with attenution rings) but will slightly boost the highs. If you do not want more highs then stick with stock or AHG pads unless you do get new cups.

The Lawton pads will change the sound so be weary of that. They work better on a 900 then the x00

I am using my Sennheiser XLR cable with my TH-610’s today. Sounds okay. It is not an actual Sennheier cable, just a cheapie I bought on Amazon. Sounds good with the TA-20.

Be careful with that, there will be polarity issues, the fostex connectors are unique

What could happen? They clicked in fine.

Go do a polarity test and see if you have inverted polarity

And how would you do that?

Find the center and twisted ones

Usually reversed polarity in one channel just sounds like shit.
There are some actual recordings that have the error in them.

Correct, it’s not extremely noticeable at first if you aren’t experienced but you will start to notice things sound pretty off lol

Tests all done. I had to unplug my balanced amp and take it to the office. No polarity problems with this cable. I searched the net for other tests and they also went fine.
I have seen videos where people had to carve up a Sennheiser cable to get it to fit. Mine clicks right in and works fine. I bought this cheapie with my HD58X’s:

I have a few of their cables.
