šŸ”¶ GoldPlanar GL1200

Has anyone compared the different ribbons?

Are there different ribbons? From what I could tell the second set of ribbons in the pelican case are straight replacements and not a different ribbon all together. I just got mine in today but sadly the Jot R arrives tomorrow. Surprisingly running them off the speaker outs of the Emotiva BasX A100 actually works quite well. The Jot R should be a huge improvement once it arrives though.

from what i could tell theres a silver and a gold variant and i think theyā€™re supposed to be tuned differently

Hmm maybe the second set of ribbons in box are the silver and the golds are pre installed. I havenā€™t pulled the current ribbons out yet so I cant confirm if that is the case.

Who did you order from? You only get the second ribbon standard if you order directly from TaoBao. If you ordered from Linsoul, you can request the second ribbon nicely and maybe theyā€™ll send it to you gratis. If you ordered from Drop youā€™re SOL unless you buy them from somewhere else.

I bought them through linsoul and chose the titanium with gold and silver ribbons. Iā€™ve only had them for a few hours now and still need to read the documentation on how to replace the ribbons. My guess is that if might be a while before seeing ribbon comparisons as you will have to go through the break-in process again with the new ribbon.

I can see where the ribbons come out but I do not see how to remove them and the docs donā€™t help or specify from what I can tell. Has anyone removed the ribbons yet and if so how did you get them out?

I have skimmed through this thread for 5 minutes (7:30 AM w/no sleep and ADHD) and what Iā€™m gathering is that people are skeptical of the quality, but most/all reviews in here from actual users are exceptional? Gaming on them seems to be GREAT (which is why I want to include them in plans). Anyone feel like wasting their time to help me figure it out because I canā€™t be fucked to read it all? Would be much appreciated. Also, does it need a reciever or does a speaker amp with preamp built in work?

Receiver, integrated amp, amp + preamp separatesā€¦ any of those will work.

Damn, thatā€™s a whole other level of ā€œheadphone wallā€.

If anyone is looking for a cheap way to power these, believe it or not, the tiny little Aiyama A07 Class D amp ($75 from Amazon including power brick) actually does a reasonable job of driving the GL1200. I still prefer the Phase Linear 400, as it provides deeper bass response and a larger soundstage, but the Aiyama does a passable job creating sufficient volume without breaking the bank; a great ā€œstarter ampā€.

I just received my pair from Linsoul. Iā€™ve been playing with it all day and all I can say for now is this: donā€™t believe all the hype. NO, these do not best electrostats. NO, these arenā€™t the best things since sliced bread. The transients are significantly too slow for my taste. Things like electrostats, the fostex/denon lineup and the HD800s will be much faster than these. These have about the same or less level of detail as my pair of GL2000s. The GL2000s are actually quite good for the money. I donā€™t feel like the GL1200s are worth twice as much as the GL2000s. These do beat the GL2000s in bass and holographic effect by a good margin, but I get more spaciousness and detail and transients from my Jade IIs, and I donā€™t even consider those that high end. I would choose the Jades over this any day. Mind you I donā€™t run the Jades from their stock amp. These are just OK, and not mind blowing by any means. I wouldnā€™t hesitate to trade mine for a pair of Stax. Iā€™m powering these with an Hypex amp based off the NC502MP cores, so I DO have more than enough juice feeding these. I do feel like detail is just good, just not superb for a high end headphone, and I feel the speed just a bit too laid back and mellow for my taste. These are still good for most genres and the details donā€™t get muddled when tracks get really busy with content. In a way I think these offer more full bodied sound than what Iā€™m used to. I think the unique holographic/layered property and great dynamics provided by these headphones are enough to justify the cost for some. I think ribbons just offer uniqueness that other technology canā€™t, but itā€™s not necessarily whatā€™s the best out there.

Thank you for the honest opinion

The GL1200 need break in time and a good amp pairing. If you just got them then you havenā€™t heard them at their best. Iā€™ve been running the silver ribbons for a week now and they are still breaking in. Sadly one of the gold ribbons came damaged so I donā€™t have much input on them yet. Give them some time, they might surprise you after some burn-in time.

Interesting to compare the overall profile to much of electrostatic world. You do allude to this delivering a thicker sound than maybe expected, I think thatā€™s true. My question is, did you give these a lot of burn-in, or was this Day 1 experience with them?

This was after a few hours of heavy burn in, but yes, just the first day impression. I highly doubt a few weeks of this will be give it a night and day difference. Iā€™m somewhat skeptical of burn in tbh. I feel like most burn in is actually brain burn in - your brain accepting different tonality as the new normal. Iā€™ll give these a few more days, but right on day 1 these are a nope for me. If I listen to them for a few hours my brain thinks theyā€™re decent. But if I put them down, come back, and put them on again, my sentiment is all over again: ā€œyeahā€¦ nopeā€

Mine came with the gold ribbons already applied. The silver ones look a bit damaged. Did they tell you theyā€™d replace them?

If you bought them through linsoul theyā€™ll replace them one time. Ever replacement after that is 10$ per pair of ribbons. Not a bad price actually.

Hi has anyone tried Schiit Vidar amp on the GL1200?
