I saw you had a GSX Mini in another thread, have you tried them on those? Trying to decide my amp upgrade, that or Vio 280
What amp(s) are you using now?
Im on a Monoprice THX Desktop
Canāt see anything glaring wrong from a spec or measurement perspective. The EQ ability seems like a cool option, like a baby RME dac/amp! @M0N thoughts?
Question is if it really holds up.
I also never heared about a Meze Empyrean with loose screws, or any other headphone beyond the 200ā¬ mark that needed maintenance during a reviewā¦
Personally not the biggest fan of the thx amps, a gsx mini or v280 would be a monumental upgrade over the thx
Now that im really planning this, would i be better off upgrading the amp first and use the THX as a Dac, then go Cyan? Thatās using the mentality of Headphone > Amp > Dac
That would give you a larger benefit quicker, either way would work though and both ways would lead to an upgrade over what you currently have imo
Right on, i totally forgot i could use it as just a dac, i think priority would be amp first, not that the Focals or Golds are super hard to drive just quality and damping.
I primarily use mine as a dac since getting my liquid plat, itās nice because you still get to make use of the EQ features which Iām a big fan of.
very true, ya im not sure why i forgot about that, sounds like a plan thanks
Ahahaā¦ Yeah that would never happen looks at my zmf
The amp to get in that price range is the Milo from Wells Audio. I like the Milo more then the mini and v280. Found the V280 too dark and mini was always better in sound. The Milo stomps both amps in power produces more power then Ican Pro is tube sounding and fast with a warm signature. Puts out 10 watts at 46 ohms. Itās Clean, quite, not big or heavy and the base model is $1699. You have options for upgrades. I own HeadTrip 2, Milo Reference and Cipher DAC from Wells Audio. I talk to Jeff the owner he actually calls me to make sure the equipment is to my liking. Itās built to order sometimes he has product ready to go. Thereās reason for me owning the two amps reason Headtrip 2 is for Abyss 1266 TC and Hifiman HE-6 I canāt put easy to drive headphones on that amp so I bought the Milo Reference. Iām selling off WA33, Euforia, Custom Citadel. Iāll never go back to the other amps. If interested pm me and Iāll give you my name to drop at him. He did give me a big discount as brand new customer.
Wow thanks for the detailed response I did actually go to their website after I saw that you had a Wells still doing some research. What dacs are you running by the way? Was looking at the Holo Cyan and Soekris. It does say something if youāre willing to sell all those amps in favor of the two Wells.
The DACs are Mytek Manhattan 2, Holo Audio Spring lvl 2 KTE, Chord Hugo TT2, and Wells Audio Cipher. I looked at the May originally but didnāt think I needed it for my Euforia and Custom Citadel so went Spring. I basically went with all the forum posts on Headfi to make my decision. It did pay off I love the DAC. I can only imagine what the May sounds like. Did you look into gd Audio, I heard good things about their R2R?
Currently listening to the GL on WA33 and TT2 and creamin my pants. TMI?
I really donāt want to sell any of my amps. The tube amps just kill the wallet. Solid state one time fee.
The R2R11 is an epic steal at the asking price. The R27 and 28 are awesome as well. Audio GD has rock solid products at very reasonable prices.
Just a comment: isnāt the Monolith THX DAC/amp the one that converts the Analog Inputs so as to apply the EQ and other digital effects? Remember seeing something like this on Zeos Review, maybe Joshuaās.
Also, on the QC doubts, I think events like the Focal driver fiasco, with failures from the Elex up to Clears; and the Sennheiser HD800/800s connector failure show us that every company can sh*t on the customerās head, no matter where they come from.
Thatās why I think itās best if all people who bought them could please post some impression here, even if itās agreeing with someone whoāve already posted. This way, if there are QC problems or unit variation, we can better try to see the numbers here, and also observe how is the company response to it. Thatās a better way to see if GoldPlanar is a good company or not.
My FOCAL Clear which I love has a loose something under the band on one side. My ZMF Aeolus also had a loosened screw on one side. Not a biggie but I have not reached the $$$ range where everything is perfect
Itās not about a price range though; I mean, I bet $9 Sony and $21 Koss will have a much better chance of being perfect!
lol not too much tmi no i like to hear that its going well for youā¦i like the Cyan because it will let me scale easier, i tend to like all in ones for space savingā¦ Plus ive read alot about the Holo stuff and the praise itās receivedā¦i would love a tube amp soon, a bottlehead for sure, still researching the Feliks stuff for my Clear.
