Hi Guys,
So for the owners of the GL2000.
so far I only got Sen h58x and I love it I want an upgrade I am waiting for my new dac/amp that comes with 4.4mm (also xlr).
I was planning on getting this GL2000 but now as so many opinions not sure.
mainly will be for:

  1. heavy metal ( Power metal , eg: Nightwish, Rapsody, Blind guardian, strato, etc)
  2. Rock ( metallica, guns, etc)
  3. GAMING
  4. 80ā€™s
  5. instrumental/ clasic music.

So, base on that should I go with GL2000 or ā€¦ Zeus 350$ + planar Sigva p II 389 (same or almost the same as the sendyaudio aiva) , cost will be a bit more, but 2 different headphones, what do you believe?
please let me know

i would say gl2k with mod is handily better than both all around and i didnā€™t like the zeus without eq, though the staging was really nicely done. as for the sigva p-II, i have not heard it but i have heard the m570 and it didnā€™t seem that special and i think its pretty close to the same thing(correct me if iā€™m mistaken, it was a while ago). without the mod iā€™m not sure your preferences are right for the sound but you might like it, who knows. i personally almost always have to eq headphones to my liking and i dont feel the need at all with the modded gl2k. you do have to take extra care of them after you mod them but if youā€™re willing to just take care of your nice headphones (which you should do regardless of the price) then they are just finding a new way to blow my mind every day like no other pair of headphones ever has. i made one of my best friends demo them for a couple hours through an a90 with all his favorite songs and he literally almost cried. and heā€™s not a particularly emotional guy.

hifiman is generally the best for classical music. If I were you I would buy the grado hemp + hifiman sundara

What Amp&Dac are you using with the modded GL2000?

SMSL M300 mkII/SMSL M400 depending on use and topping a90. some of the smsl dac filters can actually be that finishing touch with certain genres. its really really subtle but every once and a while adjusting the attack/decay filter BS can be really nice.

I took out one of the tuning paper with my previous amp&dac combo (S.M.S.L sp200 and S.M.S.L su-8) It sounded good without too much sibilance like it was with two tuning papers out. But now, with my bi-frost 2 and jotunheim 2 combo. It sounds so good with both tuning papers out. The details and separation is insane.

How much difference does taking one layer of paper out make? I may try the mod at some point but I really donā€™t want my driver totally exposed.

It makes a significant difference. its worth trying.

iā€™ve been trying to get people to trust that the difference is literally night and day but without putting them on someones head they just dont get it.

If a headphone requires you to mod and do surgery on it to sound good, is it a good headphone to begin with?

Yes, or at least the drivers are good.

is a headphone that requires eq or tubes a good headphone to begin with? or a pad swap? or a headband mod? where does it end? do we have to be able to power every pair off of a phone jack? a cable swap so it can be balanced? replacement tips for iems? frankly i dont care what it takes, if every headphone on earth could sound half as good as post mod gl2k then its worth some effort. people compare these to nighthawks and people mod nighthawks all the time and i think theyā€™re one of the shining examples of something that requires eq to sound even remotely decent. iā€™ll put it like this, post mod these thing absolutely fucking stomp aryas and people gush over those and i own a pair. they shit all over audeze everything. they have better soundstage than an hd800s, which i also own and that everyone claims is the soundstage king. i do think the D shaped pads could have a velour contact patch for comfort but iā€™m going to 3d print some pad adapters and go down that path eventually. if the difference were subtle or almost unnoticeable by anything but well trained ears that would be one thing but these just turn into the best all around open backs iā€™ve heard in my life. regardless of price. theyā€™re not the absolute most detailed headphones iā€™ve ever heard but theyā€™re damn close and if thats the only thing they lose out on while being $1000+ cheaper than things that beat them at detail and ONLY detail then why would you not buy these and mod them? and for reference i think they sound like trash for a lot of stuff pre mod, but amazing for some stuff.

But dust can get in now. Can you share a pic of how it looks now?

Probably going to sound like a jerk for speaking up butā€¦ whatever. Look, I am happy for you that you enjoy this headphone that much now that you modded it but your harping on this extremely heavyā€¦ not many people here or people I know in person will want to sit there and mod a headphone, despite the mod being easy to do, thats worth over $600+ for better sound at the risk of destroying that headphoneā€¦ planars are not tanks they definitely can break very easilyā€¦ opening up that driver to dust, hair, grime, etc puts that headphone at more risk than itā€™s worthā€¦

I tried this modā€¦ I will agree it does sound much better, but this absolutely should NOT be necessary to achieve and like this headphone whatsoever same with how much EQ one needs to really sink into this. There is also no way that I can think of to really pull that paper and keep that headphone safe, let alone keep the soundā€¦ dust and other particles can waft through air and get into this while using itā€¦ I will agree I like this mod, quite a lot actually the sound is very nice and a hell of a lot better, but I would never ever recommend doing this

Are Planarā€™s as susceptible to dust ingression problems as say Electrostatic drivers?

I do believe e stats are the most fragile if I remember reading correctly on their designsā€¦ planars and dynamics are pretty resilient but there isnā€™t a single driver in existence that canā€™t be damaged from dustā€¦ those filters and paper are kinda there for a reason after all

I absolutely know an estat can be completely killed by dust though

Agreed but reading through this thread one would believe they were added just to fuck up the sound signature :man_shrugging: LOL,

Putting a well stretched pantyhose might be a good option. Thatā€™s what I put on my modded m1060C

nah, anything you put on this seems to distort or compress that soundā€¦ even very thin fabrics bring back those hollowed out mids it seems which is annoyingā€¦

I mean, going to be honestā€¦ I am pessimistic as hell, I will admit that lolā€¦ I thought he was blowing smoke a bit there or hype manning up the paperless gl2k hereā€¦ but no, all my issues I had with the signatures compressions, hollow mids, dull unrefined treble, etc practically fix themselves when you remove thatā€¦ itā€™s honestly pretty damn stupid. There isnā€™t a way I can think of to resolve this honestly
