šŸ”¶ GoldPlanar GL2000

Could maybe you could also use Computer Dustproof Cooler Fan Filter Mesh?

talking about the thin fine mesh you see in pc cases nowadays? Tried that, nopeā€¦ caused a slight veil

Glad you tried it :+1:

I tried quite a few including thatā€¦ the headphones leaving soon anyway, I want nothing to do with this thing at this point. Even if I somehow manage to fix the issue I see here nah, not worth keeping to me

Lol so I tried the GL2000 on a $900 Oppo Dacā€¦holy shit it sounded a tier better. Like it sounded real smooth, detailed, and dare i say it, natural. It made coming from the Zen Dac sound like scratchy and digitalā€¦

Not saying most people would buy a dac more expensive than the headphone but likeā€¦holy moly it sounded good lol

I mean, I have mine connected to Violectric 220 + Soekris 1421 lol. I refuse to test this headphone with lower than asgardā€¦ sounds pretty awful to me even post eq with lesser equipment

I will have modius/asgard3 tomorrow. Hopefully thatā€™s good enough

if your a fan of the signatureā€¦ should be just fine lolā€¦ it doesnā€™t take much to power just really sounds better with higher equipment. Asgard should be just fine

Asgard is higher equipment right? Also I have no idea what is the signature of asgard 3. I think itā€™s warmish?

eh middle gradeā€¦ warm tones, large spatial recreation, somewhat colored, some small amounts of roll in the treble

Oh and that doesnā€™t help GL to sound better? Whatā€™s the best amp for it then

So this if cut to size which isnā€™t too hard and put behind the metal grill mesh to hold it in place up against the little gold bars is the best result iā€™ve had. the sound signature remains fixed but it ever so slightly gives an outer edge to the soundstage and seals it from dust. that last little bit of soundstage is pretty nice but if you just want the sound fixed and detail, separation, imaging and still quite a big soundstage improvement, itā€™s an option for sure. pretty cheap and its like same day shipping for me from amazon. the biggest thing contributing to the weird sound is the dust filter or tuning paper or whatever it is glued to the back of the driver itself. you can still leave one of the paper dust covers in behind the grill and keep it sealed and fix almost all of the sound for free but the speaker cover material i linked sounds noticeably better. i might tear into them tomorrow and make a full post on how to mod them safely and keep them dustproof still.

no such thing, all preference really

I did the mod tonight. I removed both the loose paper filter and the paper filter that was glued on the driver chassis.

In hindsight, I should have kept one ear cup as is - so I could compare it against a paper removed cup.

Oh well. Iā€™ll say this much for anyone not sure about doing it, it doesnā€™t seem to make the headphone a lot worse, if it has a negative impact on the tuning at all. Too many factors here to be accurate in assessment: placebo, bad memory of what pre-modified sound was like, and I also have a new DAC and amp combo.

So uhā€¦I can at LEAST say that the GL2kā€™s sound as good or better to me. For whatever almagamation of reasons, they sound better to me. I want to say they sound cleaner. Could totally be placebo here and my other factors mentioned.

Iā€™m not sure if itā€™s a WORLD of difference as people have gotten from their experience, but maybe it is for them. I didnā€™t get a hugely expanded soundstage or difference in imaging. If anything, I feel like I got a bit better clarity (less raspyness on tracks that I thought I got before the mod), and a sense of a bit more air or separation. But donā€™t trust me too much. I donā€™t even trust me.

It wonā€™t break anything and it seems to improve things in one way or another. If youā€™re really worried about resale value, just remove one paper and see how you like it (the one that isnā€™t glued to anything at all). You can always put that one back in with little issue - as long as you hold onto it safely. I put mine in between the foam sheets in the carrying box.

Even the one with adhesive on it could probably be put back with a delicate application of the proper adhesive, maybe.

I think you can better verify the change if you use the same EQ after the mod to at least check if the nasalness is gone.

the nasally sound is fully gone without eq

Just listened to my friends gl2000, and if you pretend its the only planar for 600 its not bad. decent mids and bass , ok sound stage width, but treble and upper mids have pretty major problems in tonality and air up top. just doesnt cut it when i put my anandas on. he said he isnt going to be doing the mod and will buy anandas or he6se. will have he6se in for comparison myself as well soon. they are ok but just get the anandas. its the upgrade you will be doing in 4 months anyways. maybe the mod will fix the mids and highs and tonality but thats alot of stuff for a piece of material to change and make perfect i just dont see it. and no warranty on a 600$ item from china. idk. its not a logical recommendation to do a mod on such an expensive item and kill your warranty not to mention might break a screw or the plastic and its over.

if you have the money just get both ananda and gl2k and return the one you like idk if gl2k allows returns. its quite a big difference however,

Hmm. It opens it up quite a bit. The paper filter glued to the driver unit was restricting air movement.

35% total cost restocking fee, shipping fee, customs feeā€¦ but yeah they accept returns lol.

agreed though I would take Ananda over thisā€¦ Like, honestly if I could have this build quality and comfort with the anandas sound qualitiesā€¦ I would be goldenā€¦ even more so if we could add this soundstage and air to the ananda

yes it was more comfortable than the ananda for me. although ananda isnt uncomfortable the driver is so big it sits all the way down to your jaw . the ananda will make you cry the gl2k might make you cry but its treble can block the otherwise good sound and distract from enjoying the music . tonality isnt correct or maybe its compressed one of those words its hard to explain but the ananda feels ā€œrightā€. and even then people say the ananda and arya sound ā€œplasticā€ or fake. compared to a good dynamic i suppose they both sound slightly off but i just call that sounding like a planar but gl2k is different in tone and vocals where its distracting if you are coming from mid fi or summit fi. or good IEMs like fh3 for a cheap example.
