i need a clean, dry detailed and well seperated sound for some fast technical metal, i sometimes listen to females vocal tracks as well but thats just rare.
i need the drum hits to be sharp and clear, also i need to hear the electric guitars well. i prefer clean produced songs and i need a fast bass, not a thick sound lover.
my options are
sa6 mk2( fast bass but ba bass, recessed upper mids so guitars become recessed)
oracle mk2( tribrid, a little worried about treble getting harsh)
xenns top( i read in reviews that the bass isn’t fast enough for super fast songs)
symphonium meteor( im worried if its gonna be too warm for a clean sound i like)
If you are not worried about planar timbre and BA timbre - S12 or FH7, they are beasts for ultra-dynamic metal. If you want better timbre and speed - IE600, but they are specific in sound performance and you may not like them. For speed, but with good mids, you can look at DUNU Zen Pro. All of this adds up to about $1,000. There may be better options further up, but for ultra-dynamic metal, you’ll need to fork over $1,500-$2,000.
I can’t recommend anything you mentioned above!
never heard any planar so i don’t know about planar timbre.
i can save up for a few more months for a 2k iem if they really worth it over my current budget, whats the best iem you ever heard for my needs regardless of price?
thank you for the recommendations btw!
For me IE600 at the moment and probably for a very long time, but as I told you - IE600 are specific and I cannot recommend them to everyone. But don’t rush to buy. Explore the opinions of other people who listen to rock and metal. More expensive IEMs have been listened to by
@JAnonymous5150 and he can get you into the $1000+ range if it’s worth it. Not worth it to me because there are good options under $1000. If you’re buying a planar or BA, it’s a good idea to hear one first to see if you like the timbre.
ie600 looks nice, im worried about treble harshness but overall i love treble the most if its done right.
unfortunately i can’t demo stuff where i live, sad that i have to blind buy.
For me, there is no harshness in the high frequencies, they are tastefully done, the cymbals sound good and not as fatiguing as most hybrids and tribrids . They have ultra-fast transients, they have midbass/subbass in perfect harmony for metal music without booming bass. They have a good amount of mids, slightly restrained, but still very distinct and relentless. Instrument separation is good, but not superb. Male vocals are a step back from female vocals, but the vocals are clean and clear. The drums are textured, slightly back in the mix so as not to interfere with the guitars and vocals. The guitars have good bite and amazing speed, for me they are faster than BA IEM.
Note that the soundstage is a bit wider than it is deep, with good imaging but not superb and they have a very good diffuse distribution.
Note that they need good amplification with a good source. they don’t need much gain, but it’s still good, otherwise without adequate gain they sound like $30 IEMs. I listen to them with Shanling M7 and LG V30+ - with both sources they scale beautifully. For these you need a warmer source in general, but not necessarily. The sound signature is U/V , which I would define as somewhere between the two, but not strictly V or strictly U.
The build is perfect, the comfort is perfect, but you have to find straight tips because theirs are ultra-bullshit.
Since I bought them I haven’t taken them off my ears, there is something addictive about them, something devilish that makes you turn to them again and again and not reach for another IEM.
And if you buy them, you should know that they need a little burn-in - 100-150 hours, no matter how much people don’t believe it!
But stick to these forums and collect other opinions as well. If there is anything - ask, I will answer you.
And one more thing - they are not suitable for classic rock and bad mastering, but only for modern recordings!!!
wow thanks for the detailed review, ie600 is in my main considerations now. it seems like they are coherent, detailed and fast with great bass.
what a beautiful shot with the guitar, are you in a band?
any ways ill ask for anything if i ever needed thank you!
I play solo now, otherwise I had a band for over 5 years. If you want to read also nymz’s review who has great ears but doesn’t listen to metal :
Don’t rush the purchase, see other reviews for other IEMs.
I’m terrible at stuff like this. I tend to own different IEMs for different purposes so decided on one that sounds best isn’t my strong suit. And are we talking about best within the $2k OP mentioned first or truly best regardless of price?
I don’t know. I’m just trying to help with what I have as an IEM. The dude wrote up to $600, but he could save more money. No one talks about the best, because there is no such thing for different ears! If you can help - help, if not - skip the topic!
Just read his first post. If he’s looking in that $600 range, of the IEMs I have tried (that are currently available) ThieAudio Oracle Mk2 or 7hz Timeless/Timeless AE. I actually prefer the Letshuoer S12 to the Timeless and it’s a touch dryer, but the S12s have a bit more treble energy so I went with Timeless as the planar pick there. The Oracle Mk2s treble is mostly EST based so it tends not to come across as hot as similarly graphed BA treble, IME. They are definitely the tribrid in that range that I would go with if I was looking for something dry to go with tech metal and occasional female vocals. The Oracle Mk2s would be my first rec for that in the price range he mentioned.
Wow you are using that stock cable?? I swapped that out after a week lol
nice helpful review, is nymz active on this forum? he listened to everything it seems
Yes. It’s strange that I like the cable. When I change the OG cable of an IEM, I usually violate its technical parameters. I love the color gray, it’s my favorite! I know most people don’t like Senn’s OG cable, but I’m not one of them. Otherwise, I might buy this:
oracle mk2 and prestige are one of the nicest looking iems i have ever seen, very pretty. oracle mk2 is a tribrid, im worried if the bass driver becomes incoherent in fast songs but overall its a solid choice if it have good coherency and added that est driver im curious how it sounds like.
thanks for the recommendation overall!
You rang?
audio reviewer and a father? thats how you win in life
Agreed!!! I am very happy for nymz. I also have a boy but I am not married. My wife can’t stand difficult characters like me, so we just raise our child together.
I haven’t found the DD to have any coherency problems and I think it actually plays well within the overall presentation. When you listen to ThieAudio’s tribrids you can hear that the DD has been dampened to a greater degree than you’d find in many other sets and I think that was done specifically to bring it in line with the drier presentation they sought to match the EST treble. To me, it was well thought out and well executed.
If you can swing Prestige money, they are one of my favorites right now for anything in the rock genres.
