Help needed, first setup!

Hi guys,

I’m currently new on these and i want to plan my first setup on hi-fi audio. I need your advice especially because of my budget and my limitations to buy from amazon/drop (i live in Indonesia). Based on my research on reviews and also this forum, i managed to gather some options and these are the price tag (based on Rupiah and converted to US$).

DT 770 PRO (80 ohm) - $198
DT 880 (250 ohm) - $225
HE4XX - $245
HD58X - $258

Dac Amp:
NX4 DSD - $100
Q1 MkII - $115 (i would probably go for desktop dac/amp)
K5 Pro - $166
Liquid Spark $168 + D10 $61 = $229

My music genres are R&B, Pop, Jazz, rap, some Lo-Fi, etc.

Do you have any idea what type of sound you would be going for here signature wise? What do you like and dislike in terms of sound?

i like bass, but not the EDM type. as a beginner i haven’t yet understand what type of sound that i really like. I think warmer sound is more suitable for me (?)

Gotcha, well all the headphones you listed would be pretty solid.

The 58x would be warmer, smoother, more intimate, and also a bit relaxed, pretty enjoyable

The 4xx would be wider, brighter, faster or more speedy sounding with more separation, and would almost have a larger type sound to it

The 880 would be more neutral and also wider, very detailed and accurate, might be a bit harsher on the treble (the 770 is similar but a bit more v shaped but I would suggest going for the 880 instead if you don’t need a closed back)

I think that for what you listen to, the 880 or the 58x would be my pick imo, I think those would be pretty sweet, with the preference leaning towards the 880 imo. So it would be depending on what you would want here, if you wanted a closer, smoother, warmer, more relaxed sound, or something a bit more detailed and spacious, that is fairly neutral (slightly more energetic)

Thanks for the advice! i’m actually still confused the difference between closed and open back headphones. based on my preferences, is it better to go for open/closed back?

and what about the dac/amp? should i go for K5 Pro or the topping+liquid spark combo?

So, closed back will isolate noise and also not let anything leak. Open back will not isolate and also will leak some noise. Open back is more suitable if you are at home and don’t have to worry about disturbing others, where closed back is more for travel or if you want to block noises out or not disturb people

For general sound differences, open back typically sound more natural (and open), where closed tend to sound a bit more bassy and isolating but this is a great overstatement and varies

That would depend on which headphones you decide to go with.

I think if you went with the 880, the liquid spark + d10 would be my pick, but if you went with the hd58x, the fiio k5 pro would be my pick

I think i’ll go for open back based on your explanation, so for warmer and relaxed better to go for 58x right?

Yes I would say so imo. Just wondering, do you have any headphones right now?

by the way, i think i still have to save for 1-2 months before i can get an amp, is it okay to use hd58x with my macbook pro whilst waiting for the k5 pro?

no this is my first setup, is it too advanced or not for a beginner? lol

Yes, that’s one of the benefits of the 58x being that it will run fine off most laptops and phones, so you are good there (the 880 can’t do it that well) :+1:

No you are fine, this is a mighty good for a beginner setup lol, just fine and not hard to set up

what about if i want to go for portable in the future? what dac/amp suitable for the 58x? i’m considering the q1 mk2, nx4 dsd, and audioquest dragonfly red (maybe with otg). or are there any other options that may more suitable for 58x? maybe i can search for it in the market

I think all of those will work nicely imo, I would go with the nx4 dsd as imo I think that’s a good match for the 58x, and actually might make more sense to use as a desktop amp and on the go if you travel often

what about dt770 80 ohm vs 58x? i’m trying to push my budget a little bit shorter, is it worth it to spend more with 58x? (i’m not going to buy another headphone for like 3 years+)

Going to guess the 250 ohm isn’t available where you are?

yes it’s not available, and people says 80 ohm sounds warmer? i’m just thinking that i won’t buy another headphone for long time, is it worth it or not to push my budget so i can buy 58x

The 80 sounds a bit more bass focused yes, it’s pretty solid, it’s going to be wider and more spacious than the 58x but not as open sounding, it’s also going to be more v shaped with a recession in the midrange, so a bit leaner than the 58x. I think detail is on a similar tier, but the 80 ohm signature can be a bit peaky and isn’t as refined sounding as the 58x.

So I do think the 770 would potentially be up your alley imo, it would serve you well. If you are going for better bang for the buck, then I would say the 770 would not be a bad option. In terms of dac and amp if you plan to use it portable, that nx4 is solid, and if not the k5 pro would work well imo
