šŸ”¶ Hifiman Edition XS

itā€™s holding together very well. as it should for blue threadlockerā€¦problem soved and just as i said, donā€™t pull the yoke screws, theyā€™re sensitive.

Is putting a silicone o ring or foam/cloth not an option to give it some friction, loctite seems super permanent and damaging if you ever decide to remove it for whatever reason.

@chocoholix21 Blue threadlocker should be fine itā€™s ā€œsemi permanentā€ so as long as you are careful not to strip things it shouldnā€™t be too much of an issue to remove again. Red threadlocker however, yeahā€¦that will cause some issues.

Thereā€™s a disc type washer/nut inside that the screw goes into. Basically, if you take the screws out, you have to (per the book) get back into the cups (open the front baffle part) and locate the washer and then drive the screw through it.

The screw does not go into the frame itself, and if the screw is taken out, the washer/nut or whatever that is, will be free.

I had a little - issue. A small one really.
But I think Hifiman could pay a litttlllle more attention to the QC. I really love these headphones.
Something wasnā€™t right on the right earcup. I was hearing a little tiny little tip or tap - very minute for every little beat. Ver faint, but just audible to me. Anyhow, I looked through the drivers with some light. There was something in the magnets and the diaphragm casting an opaque shadow.

Iā€™m the restless kind so I opened up and took the driver assembly out. I took off the fabric too. Lo and behold - a little piece of fine metal dia (prob left off of punching the circuit, as it seems a shiny metal off the inductive coil tracing part). Anyhow, very carefully, I pried this out with a toothpick. It was a bit of risk, no doubt, but I was OCDing.

Now this is def a QC issue and nothing that took place outside of Hifimanā€™s factory, as the piece was sticking to the diaphragm, and the fabric is then glued onto both sides, and not possible for it to end up where it was, after.

Anyhow - just wanted to share. I guess Hifiman still has some ways to go until these minor and petty issues cease.

DISCLAIMER: Personally, I do not recommend taking off the fabric and diving into the drivers - itā€™s a bit risky. dia is very thin and fragile. At your own risk, everyone. I had a situation so had to sort it out.

I am interested in purchasing a pair of the XS but Hifigo is out of stock. Has anyone purchased on Aliexpress and had a good experience with the shop?

I took a quick look and was overwhelmed by the variances in price and store ratings.

Thanks in advance!

edit: grammar

Iā€™ve hardly had any issues with my 300+ purchase from AliExpress so I donā€™t believe there should be a problem.
The price I think you should be looking at is between $439-$441, excluding shipping.
Now the shipping time and any duties you have to end up paying is how you could decide.
This also often depends where you are located.
Also - should there at all be any problems, then youā€™d probably have to ship them back to China so that may or may not work for buyers. Thatā€™s a very rare chance however.
So well - it really is up to you.

The product is still new and I donā€™t think many may have received it yet from AliExpress so probably why not many experiences shared there.

My pair from HiFiGo arrived today, it took a little over 3 weeks. No defects that Iā€™ve noticed. I have a big head and big ears, and many headphones donā€™t fit comfortably, but the XS feels like it was made for me. I think they might be problematic for folks with smaller than average heads. The ear pads are a little warm, could be an issue in the summer, probably no worse than most Hifimans though.

Too early to really comment on the sound, but Iā€™m not at all disappointed. They leak sound like a mofo, anyone nearby will be able to hear them almost as much as you can.

Yeah everyone gets a concert with these. The natural tendency of most open backs, but I canā€™t care much about people around - am usually alone in my home environment, and these def not for office/subway/outdoor or crowdy space use.

Yeah pretty big overall - I go maybe 2, 3 notches tops. I see how these may even fit a Norwegian Troll so never running short on the size part.

Do let us know more soon - would be good to know how all of us feel, and if thereā€™s any coherence to what weā€™re perceiving hereā€¦

Will they be available in europe?

We donā€™t know when or if theyā€™ll be available outside China.

The XS seems to be a good all rounder, with a refined, agile and expansive sound. To my ears, theyā€™re slightly warm, with laid back treble, probably too laid back for some. Mids are very nice, present but not too forward, vocals sound natural. The bass is well extended and controlled, and thereā€™s plenty of it when called for. They sound open and effortless, with great imaging. I feel like I lucked out with these, the sound suits me very well. Theyā€™re fairly forgiving of poor recordings, but they really shine with more complex music.

Yeah I like the natural vocals - the timbre too, feels natural to me. I see the lack of treble - to me the mids seem a bit too laid back too sometimesā€¦ effortless imaging and space though - yeah, what Iā€™m feeling here.

But overall, most of us are feeling the same way! So far, the XS has disappointed no one. That great news imho.

Even though the XS is a bit heavier than the HE400se, I find it more comfortable. The headband padding is softer, and it seems like the weight is better distributed. If you have a large head, the XS is also 10x more comfortable than the Edition X V2, their clamp was far too strong. I wish I could provide a comparison of their sound, but I had the V2 a long time ago, and my setup was completely different then.

Iā€™m not sure still whether I think the vocals are recessed or if the staging scale is so linear that itā€™s just throwing off what my brain is programmed to already. Usually with really big soundstage and vocals being recessed thereā€™s not much ability to have a dead center of your head image but @loquitosbr recommended ā€œElis Regina & Adoniran Barbosa - Tiro ao Ć”lvaroā€ for songs he wanted me to test and when I pulled it up on amazon hd the vocals sounded like IEM intimate like they really were dead center in the middle of my head so I just donā€™t know what to think. I feel like if the recording has truly forward mixed vocals they come across as forward but if theyā€™re supposed to sound like theyā€™re a bit in front of you, they do. Could just be a good parlor trick they can pull off well.

Yes I see what youā€™re talking about - dead center IEM center vocals, I am hearing that on a few tracks. Yeah I think they do reproduce, quite aggressively, what the recording was done like. If center mic recorded dead center, these will make them sound dead center.

Another point I wanted to share: some things Iā€™m definitely not used to here otherwise - the L and R separation is quite drastic and very strong. Usually all my other cans would have some kind of a mix on both channels, these go hard left and right for many instruments and bass etc to the point where I sometimes feel one side has a problem lol then I play something more balanced and itā€™s all fine. Surprising in this way, these cans - quite intriguing and interesting at the same time lol.

this so hard. the separation is really really strong. itā€™s caught me off guard a couple times as well where i thought something was wrong but it was just so far to one side it threw me off.

Have you guys tried crossfeed? Iā€™ve never used it much, but it might be worth experimenting with.

I like to run a touch of crossfeed via a plugin on Peace. A+ would recommend
