šŸ”¶ Hifiman Edition XS

I should caveat that I still think the XS could use more power but the gryphon makes up for it with xbass.

Seems we had a similar idea. Came in today, decided to ditch my TV >qudelix 5k (dac) > sp400 > 15 feet extension cord to the couch setup and go back to a easy time where I just had a xCan and a hd700.

(4.4mm cable is on the way)

Oratory1990 did measure a couple pair of these a couple days back if anyone missed it. 87 preference rating and eq didn’t change much, ending at a 89.

One more new review.

That preference rating is kinda silly to me. I mean, I remember him putting the pc38x as like 102/100 after EQ and laughed my ass off. Those things absolutely do NOT take EQ well and I remember a corrected deva hitting 100/100 which is pretty ridiculous as well, IMO. The scoring seems almost arbitrary with some things hitting like 107-109/100 and I feel like actual technicalities don’t play into the scoring whatsoever, just how closely a simple 7-10 band EQ can get the FR to his target.

This idiot is back thinking the world needs to hear what he says about this headphone

after reading all the reviews I thought of ordering a pair. I don’t know about their policies. This is the first time I am going to buy from an international store. which would be the best store to buy. and if I buy on the Black Friday sale do they provide a return policy? regarding shipping, I had no experience with USPS mostly I prefer Aliexpress. I heard USPS liteblue doesn’t guarantee if the product is lost or anything happens in case. So, I’m scared.
any suggestion or advice is helpful for Mr.
Thank you

These $20 stickon sheepskin earpads off AliExpress are just the best and probably the only upgrade I needed for my pair.

Just perfect! @Pokrog mounting rings is no more a concern. For no good reason, $40+, those ones. No need really.

Did someone paired the Edition XS with Topping DX5?
I would like to pull the trigger in this combo, but I don’t know if the DX5 is enough.
Thanks.

Guess You can only find out yourself. If you read along the thread you will see the opinions about required power differ a lot. Some are talking about speaker amps, some others say the normal 1W-3W range is enough and myself saying they run fine of a Qudelix 5k (210mW).

Why the DX5 ? It seems to be barely any better than the DX3 pro+ but double the price.
DX3 pro+ : 116 dB SINAD, 1.5W @ 32Ohm
DX5 : 122 dB SINAD, 1,7W @ 32Ohm (XLR headphone out is not balanced)
Only thing would be the XLR out on the back, don’t know if you need them for some powered speakers or so.

I didn’t think about it… almost same power and efficiency. XLR is not balanced as you said (missleading).
No need for outputs speakers. And quite cheaper… hmmmm. Thanks for opening my eyes!

Or to save yourself from FOMO you could use the dx5 money to get a power house like the topping A30pro with a DAC of your choice.

E30 if you need a remote.

Modi or atom dac to have something in your chain that is not developed and made in China.

Maybe a Zen DAC for the bass boost if you don’t EQ (Zen dac doesn’t measure as well tho (90db). If You care about measurements…)

It is a better option than dx5 (price wise), but I don’t think that the Edition XS needs that much power. I really like the idea of AIO, bluetooth and remote control. So I think that your idea of DX3pro has all I need for much less money (wich I really appreciate)

idk I read something about the dx3+ having trouble with under 20 ohm headphones, should still work but I think that’s the one thing the dx5 is actually better at

I think enough of these has been noted but heres something from me incase anybody was wondering

I will be sending these out soon, courtesy of @Pokrog

HOWEVER, I will first be testing the newer Arya before making a further decision(I have the originals and heard some good things about the new version i believe it also has the stealth magnets? dunno, like literally looked nothing into it just yet). Provided what I have experienced here with the XS I will be doing away with my original Arya and it’s what I would call inferior sound to this one. This headphone does exactly what I feel is missing from the aryas in a many ways including the bass and overall tonality. Of course sound quality and things such as detail is better coming off the arya… but I honestly don’t feel that considering the OG Arya for me was double the price of the XS that this gain of technicalities is worth the cost… now maybe the new arya will help keep the aryas on my wall but as it stands this is the top contender for me from hifiman… this headphone is downright fucking superb, my only issue is I really wish it had a harder clamp so I am searching for ways to increase that a bit for later as it slides around too much on my head. I saw some lists on soundstage up above but got a laugh as I saw something like T1 beneath a shp9500 soundstage as well as the 1990 so I disregard those ludicrous lists… however, I also own the HD8XX from drop… this headphone is definitely up there in terms of soundstage its probably the 2nd largest I have next to that headphone with imaging and separation being excellent. This headphone is absolutely worth the purchase for someone searching for this kind of signature out of a planar and is essentially sitting up there with my favorite headphones alongside Aeon 2

Oh, You are actually right.

The dx3pro+ is running out of current at around 2.2V at 16 ohm (blue lines) . So power would be around 270mw. Looks like at 18 ohm it could be approximately 3V =500mW.

Dx5 goes up to 4,2V = 980mw at 16ohm

@Fixxxer Sorry, didn’t check that. Still thinking the dx3pro+ would do a good job though.

Great write up.
The rtings Soundstage ranking is a little wierd in the middle field.
I changed from HD800S to XS to Arya V2 just to have the middle ground between Soundstage and bass. Value wise of course the XS wins big.

May I ask about Your opinion about power requirements for XS and Arya?

Edit; sorry, you already did.

Hmmm, thanks for pointing that out. Now I’m afraid that dx3pro+ may be not enough. Probably volume would be more than enough, but maybe doesn’t bring up to life all the capabilities of the drivers. I will look for other options in other brands too (I don’t discard dx5 or a30pro anyways)

Thanks!

I own the Dx3pro+ and can tell you Topping released a firmware update to address this (I haven’t updated yet). Apparently, this was a toosensitive setting of the amp-overload circuitry.

Seems you are right too.

Found another measurement where it is not load dependent. The date of this measurement is before the update though. Guess not every unit ran into protection mode too early.

So maybe @Fixxxer can still get one.
