šŸ”¶ Hifiman Edition XS

Is the Xs best overall headphone under 600?

It depends a lot on what you are looking for, that being said its a great set
I only have it stock right now and i love it, though i have a couple of pads on the way

On a technical level, most likely. Comfort and tuning are the wild cards.

If you like the presentation of egg-shaped hifimans and leaner sound, sure. Personally I prefer punchier planars like Verum and HE-500 and for leaner sound and bigger presentation I grab my HD800.

Thanks. Edition Xs will be the next ā€œupgradeā€. Now I have dt1990.

You could also wait for the Ananda Stealth. 799 incl taxes though.

I think there is a big problem when talking about those kind of price diffeences, if its 100$ you could make the argument but 300$ is more than 50%, which throws out one of the Xs better features the price to performance

The sizing/fit on these cans is wild. I heard plenty of talk about it, but actually trying it leads me to suggest that people really try them on before buying. Sounds good, of course.

Has anyone noticed any change with the burn in?

Another thing. The Edition Xs came to me in a different box. I feel the pads stiffer and the headband too.

Hmmm well the pads have been stiffer on the XS anyhow. Headband = same. Unless - this is not the first pair you have tried.

I don’t think there’s been any change to the product, just the packaging. I’m like 95% certain of this - just a wild guess lol.

After a year, I still think Arya is a must have for any Hifiman lover. At least is easier to obtain compare to HE1K and Susvara.

Man, my pads should arrive on 1st of july. Ordered them from aliexpress (store: sun-bow) on 06/06. I got a message today that my order was cancelled, because the tracking number wasn’t original. Hope i get my money back soon.

I’m doing tests with the Edition Xs and I’m not convinced.
TIDAL on Flac, I try various genres and use the laptop as a source, I compare it with the sonata HD pro dac and amp(on high gain) and with the ifi hip dac (on high gain).
Few differences honestly.

I notice that it sounds somewhat thin, with definition, stage and everything average. Nothing special. You might think at first that it is a 150 euro headset.

What’s going on?
It lacks burn in (it has two hours of use), it’s the cable, I have to give it more amplification…

Your amp is drastically underpowered. They take a sustained current that no dongle is capable of. If fully driven is 100, you’re going from 1 to 2. It’s just not even debatable at this point. I’ve tried them on probably 10 different entry level amps and there’s a lot you aren’t getting on everything in price up until around the Asgard 3 or SH-9. SP200 was a little lacking all around, A90 was lacking in low end control, 789 was laughably bad. It’s not an easy to drive headphone. Easy to get loud, sure, but they take a decently built power supply to keep up with the current draw.

Yeah I actually messaged them cause the tracking wasn’t moving, they said something about lack of raw material, I just disputed and got my money back, figured there was a chance for some bs since they were so cheap lol

But yeah anyway I usually buy my pads from ā€œsmart watched storeā€ , they have the same ones but now I’m waiting cause there’s a sale in like 3 days

I actually think they sound fine of a sonata hd pro, did you try the cable extension trick? They sound pretty damn bassy from mine, maybe your phone isn’t powering it right…

My liquid spark sounds a bit fuller but it’s definitely usable from the sonata imo

The ifi hip dac has more power than you think.

I don’t think you have to drive him crazy with this either.

Power Output (@1% THD) BAL: 400mW@32 Ohm ; S-BAL(SE): 280mW@32 Ohm
BAL: 6.3V@600 Ohm ; S-BAL (SE): 3.2V@600 Ohm

I understand that, and amps with 6 watts @ 16 ohm still don’t do the headphones justice. It’s a power supply issue and I’m guessing possibly a slew rate problem. I’m speaking from experience with much more powerful desktop amps still not powering them well enough. Maybe @WaveTheory can shed some light on the subject, he’s much more knowledgeable than me about this stuff.

What are your thoughts and preferred? What do you hope for improvement?
