šŸ”¶ Hifiman Edition XS

I have the:

HE-5LE (needs lots of mods to keep up)
HE-400i (in its day, not bad)
HE-4XX (meh at best)
HE-5se (hunk of junk)
HE-500 (fuzzor, cable, Ether Angled Lamb Pads, no screens, dynamat to get correct Q on bass, parametric EQ ) - rather listen to it then Clear, E1, Arya, 800 S
HE-6sev1 - some mods/EQ better technicals than 500 but lacks the mids
HE-HEX v2 - mods and EQ, still a soft lower treble and lacking impact in bass.

That’s on a Ragnarok 1, Gumby, LG v40, Qobuz - balanced as much as possible.

Also run a BHCs with about $500 of caps/tubes for my HD-600 which is quite excellent.

I’m selling the HEX and HE-6se to get a NIB Susvara - unless the XS or new Arya stop me. If so then an iFi no DAC streamer.

yeah the XS aren’t super power hungry and are pretty forgiving when it comes to source gear while the he6se v2 is easily the single pickiest headphone i’ve heard in my life and i don’t think a single amp under $1000 does it justice.

Am I good with my Ifi Zen Dac v2?

with the xs? should be fine. i’d get a balanced cable, though.

6se was good with the Lyr 3 w/ multibit. But generally I agree.

Been thinking and these might replace the ananda, like the 400se did for the 400i, hifiman direct has a discount coupon for them (the ananda) on my local amazon for the first time ever, they might be trying to offload inventory before selling the XS globally…

when hifiman releases in china first, then elsewhere later, what is the pricing usually like globally? Similar to the chinese pricing + VAT or whatever?

It seems like there’s a big dip somewhere in the mids. It doesn’t bother me with most music, but every once in a while I’ll hear a track or an album that makes it extremely obvious. Maybe EQ would help, if you knew which frequencies were lacking.

What other headphones do you typically listen to?

There is a dip, yes. I felt that too. I just bear with it.
Mids not it’s strong point here with the XS.

why do you have 3 he6se LOL

Ones a gift for someone and one is a backup lol. Opened the extras to check for any QC issues but that’s it

Mine came in from AliExpress.

Ordered on 10/29.
Received on 11/18.

Not good at write ups for headphones so I’m not going to do one. But I did get mine from AliExpress for anyone concerned.

Here’s the link I ordered from.

i notice they’re plugged in. any initial impressions?

Did you order all 3 brand new? And are they all perfect?

yup and yup. i even opened them up and checked the drivers.

I just got them probably 15 minutes before posting that picture so I’ve only listened to a few songs. New to hifiman and open backs so there’s definitely a lot to take in right now haha.

But just a few things I noticed:

  • More bass than I expected considering what I’ve heard about hifiman but I wouldn’t say they’re bass cannons.

  • They feel comfortable right now but I’ll have to see how they are long term. I can see the headbands bugging the top of my head eventually but we’ll see. Clamping feels fine.

  • Overall I think they sound really good. But I don’t have much to compare them to as I usually use IEMs.

I don’t want to say too much since I don’t want to give any false impressions but I’m liking them so far. I forgot to order a balanced cable so I’ll have to grab one eventually too.

i suspect the bass extension is at least flat like he1000se or edition x v2 but sometimes i feel like i hear a lift in the bass like the he1000 v2 cause it digs pretty deep where a lot of headphones don’t

How’s the edition xs compared to the he6se v2? I currently have the he6se v2 on singxer sa1 and I’ve been wanting to try the egg-shaped hifiman for the bigger stage. I’m also curious how edition xs would compare against the Arya or even hek. I mainly listen to orchestral, anime, pop and some edm music.
