I just thought of you as I was browsing iTunes. Do you know that Satriani has a new album out? āShapeshiftingā.
I did not know that, thanks for letting me know! Iāll pick it up and give it a listen with the Focal Clears.
How do the Sundaras compare to the DT880/1990s? would love some feedback since I need something detailed for mixing music
So I think technicality wise the sundara is more technically capable than the 880 600 ohm and about on par with/slightly worse than the 1990. I think for mixing music my pick would still be the beyers, but if you do listen for fun often the sundara could work for mixing in a pinch. The 1990 and sundara are both pretty nice
Noted and appreciated M0N. Thankyou!
I have a question about the Sundaraās. My favorite person in the world just bought me a pair and I love them so far. Not sure how much time I should spend burning them in (do planar magnetic require burn-in? IDK).
At any rate, Iām looking at these, and Iām anxiously refreshing the tracking page for my BTR5 (which finally came back in stock at a relatively closeby vendor), which will pull double duty as a desk DAC and a mobile DAC for a while - as my usual desktop DAC is getting repaired (thanks Schiit); and the BTR5 has a balanced output, and Iām staring at the single ended cable they sent with the Sundaraās and Iām scratching my head.
Two things: #1, this is a short 3.5mm cable, Iād love a longer 1/4" cable - my usual desktop dac outputs 1/4", so Iād prefer that
#2. single ended. Iād like a balanced cable for these as well, since Iāll probably occasionally pair them up with my BTR5⦠as it stands, I canāt.
Any cable suggestions for these headphones? nothing too expensive, Iām not made of TP money over here⦠but Iād like to grab something. they come with a 3.5mm TRS to dual 3.5mm TRS, so Iām a little confused as to why the three conductors these⦠Iāve googled around but everything Iāve found seems to be a dual-TS 2.5mm connector on the other end (I guess thatās for the HE400 series?), and Iām having a spot of trouble. anyone have some links I can check out?
I posted elsewhere as well, but again want to thank Mon and everyone here for steering me to the Sundaras. Just got them today and after a few hours they really opened up. Detail? Yes, indeed. Accurate timbre? Yes for me. Working great for my orchestral and vocal favorites. Thanksā¦everyone here is courteous and helpful!!
Just use them as normal and you should be just fine
Some good quality cables might be from periapt and hart but those might be too pricey, the sundara uses 3.5mm cables on the cup
IIRC when I saw Zeosā review of the Sundaraās he used balanced outputs but didnāt link the cables in the description. I forget if he mentioned which ones he was using⦠I should go rewatch it to see, but thatās another ~30 minutes or so of my life sucked into Z Reviews.
I love it, itās just⦠a lot of talking. Iām not trying to complain, Zeosā reviews are very helpful, theyāre just long.
Iāll look into those brands and check prices. Itās something thanks again M0N
Quick EDIT: Probably gonna go with HART eventually, the cables I want are going to run about $70 for all the ones I need.
EDIT2: for future travellers, the 3.5mm TRS pair going into the headphones - the RING is not connected. so if you use a TS cables going into the earcups, instead of TRS, itās fine, since the ring does nothing. as youād expect, on the left, tip goes to the 3.5mm (source) tip, sleeve to ground, and on the right, tip goes to the 3.5mm (source) ring, and the sleeve to the ground. the rings arenāt even connected to eachother, so as far as I can see, they just arenāt wired at all. Enjoy.
I hear a lot about planar bass and was expecting maybe a bit more with the Sundaraās. But I have to say that the bass is just right, since I am not a bass head.
Drifting through different artists and everything sounds good.
Then as I run through the Kās, I go through a Kings of Leon playlist. I didnāt realize how much I liked them, as in I have 39 songs.
As I sit here the vocals are loud and proud and in no way recessed. I can hear every drum hit loud and clear. Guitars are also standing out. What a GREAT combo! KOL have never sounded better on any gear I own/have owned.
I am sure the Elexās would sound just as good, if not a touch better. But they are Double the price, at least in Canada.
@Mon has been on a roll lately with GREAT advice!
Yeah the thing is, everything is just right. Like not too much not too little but enough to where you can appreciate it alot. Also really depends on the song, sometimes I find bass to stand out more and others midrange or treble.
Btw Iām no basshead either so I canāt comment with authority on the bass but I do own one of the better bass cans in the Nighthawks to where I can confidently say the bass is pretty damn good on the sundaras
its not lacking but its also not emphasized⦠its right in-line with the with the mids and highs⦠pretty common knowledge regarding these cans so Shane I hope this forum didnāt make you think otherwise
Exactly. It just feels right. The only thing Iāve taken some issue to is a little tiny bit of sibilance, but balancing wise these cans feel just right.
I have Anandas on the way, and I hope Hifiman is able to impress again.
I find the Sundaras smoother than the 880s (I have the black 600ohm version). Sundara has more intimate vocals and more detailed low end. Thatās off the top of my head.
Iād take the Sundara every time for music, but for gaming I like the 880 better.
I would say I do fall into the basshead category, I actually found the bass on the sundaras very pleasant. By no means are they bass cannons but in terms of bass quality they hold up very well imo. I know the earlier sundaras were considered bass lite, but on the most recent version I would not say they are lacking unless you are looking for a bass monster can.
thatās interesting, itās true that compared to the nighthawks iāve noticed some of my kpop being slightly harsher where you can hear the S a bit but i actually found the treble to be pretty tame and not aggressive. i would say better and more tame than the tin t2, dt 770 that i used to own. and it completely tamed two specific songs and one album that actually used to be super harsh on everything. altho i guess that also probably depends on the pads you use
Hmm I have the 990s and 770s. I think the Sundara beats them in almost every conceivable way. The open sound stage and precision/imaging of sounds makes them absolutely fantastic for gaming. With the controlled (but still present bass and treble) explosions and gunshots donāt fucking murder your earholes either lol. The 990s get piercing in fire fights. Havenāt heard the 880s though, so they might be different.
yeah lol i had the 990s too (altho didnāt drive them properly) so far beyers have been pretty harsh to me
Iāll have to try the Sundaras again for gaming. Not sure why I didnāt like them, I just know I didnāt. I have since upgraded to an Asgard 3, so maybe thatāll make a difference.
