đŸ”¶ HiFiMan Sundara

And if you want an amp to go with it, there is now finally an authorized Canadian dealer for JDS Labs: https://www.deskhero.ca/collections/jds-labs.

That is cool, but I am not short on amps. :grinning:

To update my situation, the Sundara’s are on their way to me. I was going to cancel yesterday, if they hadn’t shipped. They have been tied up with CanPar for more than a week. They reached out first and said the package had shipped.

Today I got a follow up from them (Headphone Bar in Vancouver). The ones that I had bought were “open-box” models. I learned later that HiFiman was selling these to Headphone Bar as there would be no more HiFi shows in the foreseeable future, so they were getting rid of the show demo’s.

Headphone Bar didn’t actually have them and was pre-selling, so to speak. Vancouver is hit Hard by Covid-19 and the headphones were never actually delivered. Someone took a long drive today to a depot to pick them up.

They actually sent me a brand new pair yesterday from their store stock. Big thumbs up to management for stepping up. :+1:

This store is four and a half thousand Kms from my home, as the crow flies. Close to 6,000kms, if you were to drive it. And yet this is my third pair of headphones from them. Great inventory, attractive prices and fast, free delivery.

Supposed to be here Friday.

Got my Sundara’s today. Really different.

I had read they had recessed mids, so I immediately put on Florence and the Machine. Vocals aren’t really recessed, but maybe not as forward as the Grado GH2’s and Focal Elex’s.
But the music is awesome! I switched over to a sound not quite as vocals focused, Steely Dan. Wow!!

I should mention that I started out on my tube amp. It sounded OK, but there wasn’t much bass. Hardish to drive too. Volume at 11:00, like the HD600’s.
I then moved to the THX SP200. VERY nice combo. Lots of bass and everything is clear and vivid.

The music sounds very full and wide. Like all around my head. Every instrument seems to be trying to push out front.

These things are wonderful. I know that I am still in the shiny new toy phase, but what a great sound. I had hoped the HE4XX’s would be somewhat like this, but these are miles ahead. Where I found the HE4XX’s very comfortable, these seem even more so, of course it’s too early to tell yet.

They recommend 150 hours of burn-in. I am very curious what that will change or improve.

Not sure if I noted it in this thread or not, but I got a good price on some incoming “open backs” from a dealer in Vancouver. They didn’t end up getting the shipment in time and I got a brand new pair for $379.00 in Canuck bucks. Right now it is looking like an absolute steal!

glad to hear first impressions are good :+1: I agree I don’t find the mids to be recessed
to me its a pretty even sound overall
burn in wasn’t a major factor in my experience unlike the 4xx which was like 2 different headphones lol
 anyways keep enjoying

Yeah personally I don’t find the mids recessed either

Nice to hear your excitement about this HP, I felt the same way about them. However I have far less experience with other gear than you do.

I do a 2-3 day rotation between my HD58X and Sundara’s, and also between my Sprout100 and 789/KTB. Keeps things fun

I do the same thing! My goal has been to collect as many different sounds as possible. And these offer another unique version of music.

This is very helpful. I have the 4xx and have been considering the Sundara, but wasn’t sure there would be enough difference. Preference is orchestral and female vocals, so soundstage is important. Sounds like you like it. Enjoy!

It is a HUGE step up from the HE4XX’s and you would be very satisfied. Orchestral would be more than amazing. The vocals are not forward, but are very present.

I’ll just say it’s an all around step up from the 4xx except for soundstage width
that said the sundara is decently wide

Again, thanks. Love this forum.

I cannot speak on orchectral music, but since I received the Sundara’s I do find myself listening to a lot of instrumental jazz and instrumental guitar now.

When I owned a Sundara, I found myself listening to Joe Satriani a lot. Sounded really good on them. Same with progressive metal like Dream Theater.

Got them in and have spent the day with them. The sub-bass was much more than what I was expecting based on prior reviews, I guess the pad revision made a substantial difference in that regard? Vocals aren’t in your face whatsoever, but it never got masked by anything either. It felt crisp and natural like you were in the room while it was being recorded and each instrument has it’s direct position pointed out in the layers of sound effortlessly. Soundstage is not remarkably wide, but it being slightly more narrow than some other open backs adds to the feeling of being in the studio during the recording imo.

I’m considering these as my next purchase since I want to upgrade my true open backs. I have the Nighthawk Carbons which are semi-open, and I have the Grado SR60i which are my only fully open back. I’ve never heard planar and it seems like these get a lot of love from a lot of people. Has anybody paired them with the Liquid Spark? That is the amp I would be using.

Most frequent recs for an amp pairing here that I’ve seen are Liquid Spark, Schiit Heresy or Asgard 3. For Liquid Spark most here say it leans a little warm sounding but does a solid job driving these and other sub-$500 planars :+1:
