šŸ”¶ HiFiMan Sundara

Yeah, everything I have found says the same thing. Itā€™s just hard to tell from pics but if the thickness is the same it appears the distance has a pretty big impact on the bass response. I wish I had an old Sundara pad to be certain but I like the sound from the new thin pads. Not a fan of the comfort though.

Yeahā€¦me neither. Iā€™ve ordered pads from Yaxi and ZMF and hopefully theyā€™ll improve comfort, raise bass and warm up the trebleā€”itā€™s too metallic sounding for meā€¦

Which zmf pads did you get?

Iā€™m looking forward to hearing your impressions of them. I donā€™t get the metallic sound but I have also used the 400i a lot over the 5+ years I had them and they have a very similar tone to the Sundara so I am probably accustomed to it.

Auteur Hybrid (Suede top, BabySheep-skin sides)

Yeah it takes a few minutes to get used to, but itā€™s most obvious when switching directly from a warmer headphone.

Sundaras sound good with the geshelli erish if anyone wants do go balanced with these. Sound just as good if not better than the asgard3.

Just finished trying out the Auteur Hybrids on the Sundaras and I think theyā€™re alrightā€¦ not really impressed, though the comfort is a sure upgrade. Compared to stock, the Auteurs have a more closed in, thicker sound. Bass is more impactful but not as expansiveā€¦ like a small but strong punch versus a large-fisted, quick jab. Detail retrieval remains largely the same, minus some treble and upper-mid peaksā€¦ voices are not as shrieky compared to stock. Soundstage is smaller, which was expected of closed pads, but now is more focused and louder. I was hoping that these pads would turn my Sundaras into basshead-level headphones and they didnā€™t, but Iā€™m starting to think that these headphones simply arenā€™t made to beā€¦ Iā€™m keeping these pads, mostly because I destroyed the stock ones but also because these are way more comfortable and I appreciate not having shrieky voices. What I would like to try next is the Perforated variant of the Auteur Hybrids and see how that elevates the Sundara experienceā€¦

Hmm when you reading about the Sundura is very very particular.
Some says year nice orher says disapoint me.
The He 4 xx disapoint me very in sounding.
I think about to give the Sundura a chance but very not sure about it to try or not.
I have now the Power to drive it.But something say no in my Head.
When is think about is the Lcd 2 or the Quad Era 1. Very difficult for me.

Sundaras are good for vocals and treble instruments but not so much on deep bass.

I mainly listen to rap and find it very enjoyable with the Sundara. I canā€™t really speak for the thicker pad model but the newer thinner pad version is very enjoyable with rap. It isnā€™t the most punchy but it goes fairly deep and can be felt. It can rumble if you insist, it is very eq friendly. With all that said if you donā€™t like the way the 4xx presents music you may not like the Sundara. Idk how the 4xx sounds compared to a 400i but the 400i and the Sundara that I have sound very very similar tonally. Sundara is better in every category but they do reproduce sound in a similar way.

So, Iā€™ve been listening to Sundaras for a couple of weeks now. Ended up buying them. Hooked up to a Lake People 109a amp and an ifi Zen Dac. The cable is really not impressive at all and I tried an aftermarket Amazon one which was worse.
Then I saw a video by an Italian guy whose channel is called Ana(dĆa)logue and he was talking about interconnects and suggested a brand called NEO by OYAIDE. I got a cable for DJ connections with a 3.5 jack into dual 6.5 (1/4) jacks. If occurred to me to adapt the dials to 3.5 and stick them in the Sundaras and into the amp. I figured it would be worth a try since they are much cheaper than higher end headphone cables. Iā€™m in my first day if listening to them and I have to say that even though Iā€™m new at this stuff, the difference in sound is noticeable. The original cable is good sound wise I think. But with these cables the width and height and depth of the music becomes immediately mire apparentl. Iā€™ve been doing constant a/b comparisons and itā€™s quite surprising. They havenā€™t had time to burn in yet either I suppose.

I donā€™t know if anyone has tried these cables or tried adapting stereo inputs to headphone cup jack sockets. I might be way off here. It sound wise I canā€™t deny it. I was kind of hoping that they wouldnā€™t make much difference si I could get a refund and use the money for something else. But itā€™s been great so far. The only thing is that they are heavy cables so not portable at all. A couple of photos : image image image

Interesting. never thought if doing that. ive been thinking of getting a better cable for my Helios. do you have the link?

Yes. Last one at 31$. https://www.amazon.com/Oyaide-MYTS-Cable-Stereo-2-5-Meter/dp/B07FQ144XN/ref=mp_s_a_1_13?dchild=1&keywords=neo+by+oyaide&qid=1593131691&sprefix=neo+by+&sr=8-13

The adaptors arenā€™t great. They cut the sound occasionally. I ordered some of a little better qualith I think. I canā€™t seem to find a reputable company that makes these 6.5 to 3.5 adaptors and vice versa.

Have you heard them with a THX amp? If so, what did you think compared to the Erish?

I have not heard them with thx, but for $200 asgard and Erish sound really good. The atom amp and ifi hip dac sound good as well. Welcome to the forum!

You could actually use any of your dual 3.5mm TS or TRS cables from other headphones on the Helios. Iā€™m currently using the HART cable I got for my Elegias. Sundara/4xx cables would work as well.
