IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

Nice! I’ll look forward to reading it. I’m not a fan of too many single DDs but thought I’d give this one a shot. It’s a very different design direction for Fiio. The entire package makes me feel I got my money’s worth. The IEMs themselves are heavy and beautiful. I’ll reserve sound opinions until I’ve had more time with them and can directly compare to some other IEMs.

Fiio is on a roll with successful iems one after the other (FH3, FD5).

Need some help with IEMs. After MMCX problems with my Tin T2, decided I needed a second pair of IEM so I don’t need to just buy cables every 6 months. And no, I don’t change cables on the Tin, at least until they stop working. Decided to try out Tin T1+ and Blon BL01 to experiment with sound and didn’t really liked them in the end. T1+ has fantastic comfort, but the sound was a mixed bag for me. BL01 has a nice rumble, but in the end, their mids are kinda off for me.

I was looking for something with good bass quality, preferably that does not bleed to the mids. Treble levels of the T2 would be appreciated, as I don’t feel them too bright. A nice soundstage is a bonus, and preferably no MMCX. My budget is ideally $250, maybe $300. Some names that popped up but none that really grabbed me: Thieaudio Legacy 4 or 5, Fiio FH3, Blessing 2 (especially the new Dusk one). The source would mostly be BTR5, and occasionally the Element 2 on my desk.

Thanks in advance to anyone that responds.

Edi: also, if this is not the appropriate place, I can delete this and post a separate topic, please DM me if that’s the case.

FH3 is of course mmcx but I have had it quite awhile and thoroughly enjoy it whether I run it portable through my BTR3K or desktop and Liquid platinum balanced. I know nothing of the others

The Mangird Tea’s are on offer at Linsoul at the mo…

Replace the Blessing 2 with the Tanchjim Oxygen.

Also add these: Fiio FD5 (my review is coming soon) and the LZ A7.

Ok, now this list is way too big. Some comments:

@Jetman yeah, I was ready to pull the trigger in the FH3 when the QC problems begin to appear, and this alongside the MMCX kinda threw me off them.

@Ohmboy I forgot about the TEA! And at this price, it’s quite tempting. One thing is some people say they are a little aggressive, and I prefer something not offensive. Thoughts on that?

@Rikudou_Goku The Oxygen is interesting, by your review they seem like a direct upgrade to the T2. The A7 is interesting, but two concerns are: MMCX, and if the nozzles go too deep. And I’m waiting for the FD5 review. =)

I will read/see more reviews on these suggestions, thanks!

Thieaudio Legacy 4 is highly recommended. The 5 is warmer, has a beefier low end and might sound as if the bass bleeds into the mix. I love the 5 and Mangird Tea personally, but the Legacy 4 is the easiest recommendation.

Here’s a pic of mine.

Holy guacamole, this is a beauty no doubt. Love the blue and gold.

I think I will narrow down to the Legacy 4 and the LZ A7. Aesthetics, price and 2pin is in favor the L4. The A7 have the multiple options of sound on it’s side though, so my thinker side tingles with the possibilities. If it wasn’t mmcx I think I would’ve jumped on it already.

I will think this throughout the weekend and do some math on the budget side. Thanks for all the inputs guys!

Ya I’m really on the fence on what to get as well, I really liked the FH5 for the wide and bass signature. But now I’m not sure on rebuying the FH5 or get the L4 or L5. I seen some reviews comparing the L4 to the Monarch. But now that @Resolution is hyping the L5 with the bass I’m not sure what one to go with.

lol, not “hyping” anything. I’m doing my best to describe how these IEMs sound.

Legacy 5 is pretty too. It has its own shell design. It’s larger than the Legacy 4 & 3 which have what appears to be the same shell and smaller than the Clairvoyance.

I have a Fiio FH5. The FH5 and all the Fiio hybrids have a crispier sound than the Thieaudio IEMs.

@Resolution Out of the FH5 and L5 what one do you prefer?

I like both for different reasons. Check out the graph comparison.

Whoops my bad this whole time I kept saying Fh5 I ment FH3. You have any experience with the FH3?

Yes I do. I prefer the FH3 to the FH5. The FH3 has a beryllium dynamic driver. Again, the Fiio hybrids are crispier than the Thieaudio stuff, but people have had issues with Fiio QC. The FH3 is only 130 vs the L5 250-300 if you get the est cable. The FH3 is a total steal at that price. The FH3 excels at metal & technically demanding material. It may sound a bit harsh if you prefer other genres where the Legacy IEMs may excel. Maybe Get the FH3 first, and try a Legacy 4 later would be my suggestion. L5 or L3 if you prefer warm signatures. The L3 is more fun and the L5 is more balanced.

Ya I really liked my FH3 and I don’t know why I really returned them. I just didn’t know if the L5 was I big enough upgrade then the Fh3 for twice the price. I am more of a basshead and listen to bassier music and game. But then it almost seems like the new L4 is possibly above both.

One more to consider might be the JVC HA-FDX1. They are on Drop again at the moment. I know they are MMCX but man I really like them. Nice balanced sound with lots of energy and some low end punch.

Will take note of them, thanks! The problem with drop stuff is importing it costs a little more since I need to forward them from US, as opposed to directly buy from Aliexpress/Linsoul/Shenzhen. Perks of living in Brazil.

The L4 would not be for you then, it’s balanced, not a bass head IEM. I don’t think you would prefer the Legacy 5 either. The Legacy 3 has a considerable amount more bass than the Legacy 5. If you can swing it, I’d go for the FD5 with your library.

RikudouGoku just put his review up for it today.

It has dynamic slam for days and extremely fast bass/mids with no weird balanced armature tonality. It’s well worth the asking price. For me, it’s the most enjoyable single DD I’ve heard. Again, the FH3 is great, especially for bass and the price can’t be beat.
