IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

The impedance adapter looks interesting - I wonder if it works with other IEMs as well. Placed an order :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes it would work with other IEMs

Yes, but
not for single DDs though usually.

Actually, you can use this site to check as well.

Zishan usually has high OI while Topping usually is pretty damn low, that along with the low impedance with uneven impedance curve on the Monarch is why it would change FR on different OI (and impedance adapter).

Thank you!! Crin was talking about how the 2 DDs were affected so I wasn’t sure if it worked for others, but this helps clarify things

For anyone interested here are my thoughts on the Resin EJ07M!

I have a couple of similar impedance adapters from Faaeal, and they make a difference with some of my gear, but not everything. Oddly, they seem to work better on cheap IEMs.

EDIT - I am checking out the Z300 with a 220 Ohm resistor, and other than needing to turn it up more, I can’t tell much difference.

Kiwi Ears Quartet

Cross posting from head-fi
First impressions:

Cable is okay but nothing special. I changed to the NiceHCK SilverLoong (silver alloy copper with silver plating). Tips I have used is the JVC Spiral Dot, source for testing Topping E70 + A90 Discrete.

Had around 4 hours of listening now, used much time checking the switches out.

Overall sound is okay but the sound is slightly dark like its behind a thin veil.
Bass is punchy with enough resolution, but not spectacular.
Mids depending on switches sound recessed, but using some modes do boost the vocal presence but this can make female vocals sharp or sibilant. Males seem fine.
Treble is better than the mids, and is clear with good enough detail for a $100. But the amount of treble energy is on the relaxing side with all the modes.
Soundstage is average, not wide and not closed in.

ON ON
Bass gets slightly boosted with the best impact, mids are slightly recessed but vocals are controlled. Treble relaxed. Fun tuning, but not very technical.

OFF ON
Bass is slightly reduced but has better texture, mids similar both vocals have more bite and some females can be too much. Treble more present in the mix.

ON OFF
Bass seems the same as ON ON, perhaps slightly forward since there is less presence in the mids and treble. Female vocals have the least sharpness here. Least favourite mode

OFF OFF
Quite balanced mode where bass is perhaps the best. Mids are like a hybrid between ON ON and OFF ON, and have a little of that extra female bite similar to OFF ON but slightly better controlled.

Going from this I prefer either OFF OFF or ON ON, the extra reduced treble in the ON ON is both positive and negative as the set moves over to a more dark sound. But at the same time I can probably listen for a long time on this mode. Some string instruments get slightly muddy with the ON ON and ON OFF, this is why I say the OFF OFF mode is probably the best. But then it’s a trade off with some female vocals or brass instruments getting on the sibilant side.

So after testing all this I wonder, why bother with all the switches. If IEM makers are going to use switches, have 1 that raises the bass a few dB. Or even better make it without and take the cost down.

Can come back with more impressions after a day or two of burn in, and compare it to some IEMs around the price.

Ok it has been a while since I am into IEMs, thanks to the Simgot EA500, I can admit I have been out of loop the lately when it comes to these. Moondrop Blessing 3? there’s a Blessing 3 now? looks like I have a lot of stuff to catch up to for I don’t know what is going on lately with the new stuff.

Going back to talking about Zeos and his iem tip fitting issue, I really think he should care sense he is a reviewer so he should find some kind of workaround that is specific to him.

I’m making all my measurements available from My Database FR.MMagTech.com available on Google for you to compare on databases that may not have them. Reminder to treat these very subjectively when comparing them to other databases due to coupler variances, different cables or tips and other factors. These should only be used as a extremely general idea to compare or to utilize with AutoEQ.

I have no skin in this game so don’t come shouting at me if utilize them as concrete readings or comparisons. I just maintain this database as a hobby and to assist a few forum members here for general comparison, their reviews and to test their sets for imbalance. All sets were personally measured by me on the exact same coupler.

As always if your United States based and would like your sets measured I’m here to do so and we can work on the details. I’ll never charge for the service and have numerous forum members who can vouch for my trustworthiness with your sets.

Alright so I gave the Canon a listen and thought it sounded extremely familiar. Uploaded the graph for Canon and sure enough. After A/Bing it sure is extremely similar to something, that being the U4s, minus a few small caveats.

The bass is more visceral and loose on the Canon and tighter with more texture on U4s. Treble extension is better and slightly smoother on the U4s. To my ears cymbals crashes and such extend out better and sound more natural on U4s. What side of the fence you sit on is a tough call. The U4s seems to have a quiter background and plays vocals slightly smoother and more accurate for me. The thickness of the bass on the Canon seems to obscure vocals compared to U4s. It’s a battle of more visceral loose bass or snappier textured bass with better and more natural treble extension.

What does it all mean. In my opinion the Canon absolutely hits the target at a cheaper price and gives you a very good taste of the 64Audio sound, at a much cheaper price, that shouldn’t leave you craving for more. It’s definitely a clear case of extreme diminishing returns and only you can answer if your bank account and willingness really need it. Then again if you want the visceral bass save the cash and go Canon and get a filling of the U4s tuning. I’m saying this as U4s being one of my current favorite sets and possibly top 5 of all time.

Thanks @rattlingblanketwoman for sending these out to graph. It’s an odd one to see how my preferences and tolerance have shifted. Clearly remember selling these for being aggressive in the treble for my ears at the time. @GooberBM this might be a good one for your matrix or possible as a cheaper alternative in a review.

Does anyone have or had both the Topping G5 and BTR7? Wondering how the G5 performs battery wise vs the BTR7. I love the BTR7 but dam does it die fast lol

I was just thinking about the u4s too. You just saved me a bunch of money!!

I wonder how the vocals would compare on the 010 (020) setting. But thanks for your analysis

Hey @MMag05 you have mentioned this a couple of times now but the u4s uses a DD for it’s bass

Hahaha :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:! Goes to show I don’t even look at the drivers stats most times. With the said it still sounds deeper and more loose on the Canon. U4s has better texture in my opinion. Thanks for calling me out. I’ll edit the wording on the post to not change the intend.
