IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

Hmmm maybe I’ll give those a try. Thanks guys.

What I have found… (and I’ve spent more time studying tips, comfort and sound than just about anything else) There are a lot of factors!!! You have to find what works best for you. What fits the best might not sound the best either. There are compromises that will always be made.

I cannot use the same tips on every IEM I own and get them to fit. So I have to use different sized tips all the time. I also have IEMs that have issues with inner ear suction or if the IEM doesn’t have sufficient venting, the DD can completely seize and you’ll get no bass. Some IEMs with issues like this will require foam tips to even operate properly.

Not all silicone is equal either. If you’re having difficulty getting the silicone to “stick” in your ears, you might want to try something like these…

The material they are made from actually has a sticky characteristic. Once they’ve been in your ear for a while, they will almost adhere to your ears and create a very good seal. I have to peel them out of my ears to break the seal. But the drawback to these tips are they are larger than average sized tips, so keep this in my if you order some and they alter the sound of the IEM for better or worse. I LOVE what they do to the Blon BL-03.

After all of my testing of all these different tip brands and styles, my preferred tips are Spinfits, but even Spinfits have many different styles and sizes, and you really should have access to all of them to meet the requirements of the specific IEM you want to use and your ears, comfort and sound you are looking for.

The Spinfit CP100 and CP145 not only are for different sized stems, their silicone is different. CP100 come in 3 sizes and the silicone is thicker than the CP145. The CP145 have 5 different sizes and the silicone is very thin. All of this stuff alters the sound fit and comfort. Depending on the IEM insertion depth, you might need a different size for different IEMs. I use a CP100 large on the Blon, but I use a CP100 SS in my left ear and a CP100 S in the right on the Mangird Tea. That ranges the entire gamut in tip size between two IEMs!

Maybe this will be helpful… Here’s a photo of some of my IEMs that show how different finding the proper tips for the IEM and your ears can be. One IEM I need to have one ear a different sized tip than the other.

Very informative. I’ve also found that I I require different sizes for different items as well, all because of the depth. Blons I need a dekoni foam large, oh10s I use spiral dot MS size. (Btw that’s the only instance in which silicone works well for me so far).

Great question to ask. I think if people did the hard work to find the perfect tips for their IEMs, there would a lot more people satisfied with their IEM purchases. Getting a perfect seal is incredibly important to the bass response. In my personal opinion, foam will never be able to give the seal a silicone tip can provide, therefor a foam tip will never be able to allow you to hear what your IEM is truly capable of.

That’s not the first time I’ve heard that about silicone vs. foam tips and that’s why while I haven’t had much success yet, I’m still looking for the right silicone tip for me, right now specifically for the ibasso it00.

To me foam tips are useless. Destroy the bass and increase the treble.

If you want my experience fitting the IT00, it was an easy fit for me. I’m using the Spinfit CP145 Medium (orange), same as the FH7 in the previous photo.

I think the key is if you can find a tip that you like the sound of and that will fit the IEM nozzle, you should aquire all the sizes available for that tip type and experiment with inserting them and find the right size for that IEM and your ears. You need that variety of tip size though to be able to get it just right.

Normal silicone tips (the ones that usually come with IEMs do not do it for me) if that gives you hope.

Good luck! You can do it!

I already have cp100s in small and medium size, maybe I’ll grab large and extra large and see how that goes to start.

Can’t hurt to have all the sizes. That’s for sure! I hope you find what works best for you.

Not sure if anyone already posted it, since I didn’t read the whole thread. Moondrop made new filters for the Starfield and kxxxs since they clogged up all the time, they are pretty cheap, I believe $5 for 10 pairs or something, and they should not clog up as fast as the standard ones.

BGGAR has updated his list.

There are some interesting changes. Notable ones…

IER-Z1R is no longer the only Top S Level IEM. UM MEST

Thieaudio Clairvoyance (tribrid) is rated right underneath the MEST. Chris’ new favorite tribrid.

Fiio FH3 rated an A

Thieaudio Legacy 3 took a hit right below the the FH3 because of QC issues, not sound.

Wonder where the EE ODIN will fit in?

I think he’s selling his set? $2600 bargain :+1:

If you noticed, he hasn’t done comparisons yet. Here’s our YouTube chat…

That is a bargain! Especially with so many anxiously awaiting theirs to be sent. It’s a founder’s edition too, but of course it has Chris’ name on it, which someone may actually really like.

Hey all I’m saying is if Rikudou ranks the ex800st an A then that will make at least 3 reviewers saying it’s in their A tier including Crin and Bggar… lol sorry for diverting.

this felt a bit random lol.

But my review is probably coming up tomorrow.

Lol sorry no pressure, I was using it as a measuring stick since ppls views of the others were really diverse in rankings etc. In the recent discussion. Again not bad with the eq, I’m just glad I like them without it. I’m more of a Zeos with a “collection of snowflakes” sort of stance on eq. LMAO

Take a look at oratory1990 and toranku´s EQ for the EX800ST then :joy:

Yea that’s Harman stuff, I get the appeal due to the performance of the driver, but I’m happy with Sony’s version of neutral. I know for enjoyment I’ve got some others that follow the curve more closely.

Whats really impressive with the EX800ST is how it passes the test of time quite good(8 year old iem!).

I was using the Xiaomi Piston 2 back then (or maybe it was the Klipsch S4)…
