That’s weird. Whenever I PM with @Sonofholhorse all I get back in answer to my questions are dick pics and erotic poetry. I just thought that was normal, but now I’m confused…
I’m probably going to hell for that and one of the coolest dudes on this thread/forum won’t talk to me anymore, but I couldn’t help myself. Please don’t take it seriously and/or personally!
Awesome! I really like the sound off the N8ii in balanced tube mode and I have an xDuoo MT-602 here that I’m planning to try them on at some point too so it’s nice to know they work well off a hybrid tube amp.
In that pic you’ve got the P1s being driven by an xDuoo MT-604 (I think?), but what DAP is that feeding the amp? BTW, if that is the 604 it has quite a bit of power so I have to ask, how high are you generally on the volume knob with the P1s?
Makes sense. I assume then that you find you’re still getting full detail and dynamic range that way then? The DX300 is one of the coolest DAPs around. I remember when they came out I wanted one soooo bad, but when I finally had the money for it I got offered an amazing deal on the Kann Alpha instead and I took it. I love my Kann Alpha and all, but there’s something undeniably cool about being able to do all the module swapping on the DX300 (and the DX320 now I suppose). Anyways, I’ll have to try your max volume power amp style setup with my MT-602 and my N8ii and see how it goes. Thanks for the inspiration, man!
So I have been listening to the Maestro Minis for a couple of days and as time went on my brain got pretty used to that massive bass to the point where the bass no longer felt excessive. After that I switched back over to the IE600 and they sounded almost anemic in the bass department (although those highs sounded so sweet!) so I decided to try a little EQ and gave them a whopping 12db of bass which definitely brought the thunder and totally trampled the Maestro mini’s FR imo. At this point I was definitely of the mindset that EQ IE600 > Maestro Mini >= IE600…
However after a day or two of listening to the EQ’d IE600s, even that level of bass started to sound normal to the point that the Maestro Mini’s sounded pretty light in the bass. At this point I came to a realization that our brains are so good at adapting to sounds and normalizing them that any quality IEM will eventually sound really good to me with enough time. It really made me re-think this whole rat race of finding my “endgame” and also made me appreciate the IE600 stock a lot more. Whenever I want in your face bass I can turn it on with EQ but having that be my everyday takes some of the excitement that comes with in your face bass.
This also makes sense that people who are always switching ear phones can really notice (and appreciate) the difference between each one. Even if the differences are fairly subtle
Oh this. Very much this!!! If I only gave you Arias and you were to listen to them for a few days to a week, your brain would take that as baseline. Anything I switch you to will have a huge difference compared to that. That’s what makes different tuning styles (versus the race to the gutter for Harman-tuning) so interesting.
If you only chase bass-heavy/balanced sets, boosted diffuse-field will sound WEIRD to you. Flat would sound bizarre compared to neutral, compared to balanced. And that says nothing about the kind of EQ playing you’re talking about. Sometimes I think I need a giant boost in the presence region, and then an IEM with a cut on the graph sounds clear as a bell and I don’t even know anymore.
Brain burn in 101, its also why bad stuff sounds better over time. Cuz you just get used to it.
(you know how if you are stuck in some place that smells bad over a longer time, you will just get used to it and wont notice it anymore.)
totally. I do think there is a limit like something objectively bad will sound “better” over time but may never reach the point of good for you. This is why trying different tuning profiles via EQ or other IEMs is very useful. I know this is not a hot take or anything but once you find your preferred tuning shape I am, at this point, unconvinced that continuing the chase for the holy grail is worth it.
That’s me when my trainee is in my office, unfortunately. you get used to the smell with time, and then you go out of the office for a few minutes. When you go back there, the smell instanlty get to your throat…
As for tunings, I do agree; I’d even go further by saying that if technicalities are good enough, I could get used to any tuning, hence my chase for technicalities (stage, imaging, separation, layering,…).
People focus on tuning becasue it is immediatly noticeable, easier to compare and even measurable, but to me that’s what can’t be measured that really matters.
Even with that mindset, I think I would need several sets: a set for sheer details and OCDing on tracks, a set for huge stage , a set for when I want something lush and cosy,…
I feel like I might be going the way of @ttorbic and having one good IEM (IE600) and then have my variation with buds. I have a prototype of one of your buds @Rikudou_Goku although I am not sure which ones and they have really grown on me. I would love eventually to have a top tier bud with a short cable so I can run it with my Q5K and have it clipped to my shirt without a bunch of cable dangling haha
