IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

I also rock it like a savage. Guilty as charged :no_mouth:

hows that working out for you? I was thinking of doing that but didnt want to risk breaking a pin with the higher leverage point

Ah, sorry, I thought I was asking for proof that FR is able to predict IEM technicalities. That was the claim made by the other user that, as far as I’m aware, has no industry standard

Perhaps I was misunderstood but, again, I don’t mean any anguish for the other user so let’s just leave it be

I did the same thing until I just recently bought a KBear TFZ cable. It always worked fine but occasionally could be a loose hold in the socket so an earpiece could fall out while twisting the cable or something. But I think that’s an earpiece thing, not the cable connectors

Correct! There is no proof of that. This is just my opinion and i certainly agree people can have differing opinions about Crinacle’s views.

The problem, as an observer of the conversation, is that whether you intend it or not your tone doesn’t come off as being someone sharing points of view in a discussion. Your tone comes off as if you know you’re right and you’re gonna catch @VIVIDICI_111 in a “gotcha” moment. You can take that however you want but I am sharing my perception of the whole thing. Do with it what you will

Ya’ll are just a bunch of dirty dogs
 I love it :sunglasses:

I can’t recall ever running into any issues but I was always very careful because of the stress point of the connection. The fit is a bit more awkward undoubtedly because of obvious reasons, but I refuse to get a TFZ/QDC/WTF whatever the heck kind of cable just for one pair of IEMs. All the rest of my stuff has either a flush or recessed two pin - I guess you could say, I am also a dirty dog in some ways

7Hz Legato first impressions

After listening to the Legato for the last couple of hours (and A/Bing various tracks against the Rosefinch) I think I have enough time on them to throw down some initial thoughts.

Summary

I would classify Legato as a warm neutral basshead IEM. Replay has an extremely natural timbre with big booming bass that doesn’t bleed or cover up the vocals. For the price I think it at least falls in the “worth it” category but I need to spend more time to see how worth it it is.

Compared to the Rosefinch I much prefer the Legato. The biggest thing I noticed is that while they graph super similar (<500Hz is almost exactly the same) They sound pretty different. Bass quantity is about the same between the two however I think Legato has a leg up in bass quality. For most sub bass focused songs (rap/hip hop) you won’t notice much of a difference but mid bass on the Legato has more texture and is more dynamic. It’s not a huge difference but it is noticeable.

The biggest thing I noticed is that the Rosefinch tonality is more V shaped compared to the warm neutral nature of the Legato. Because of this, the Legato can be cranked up more without the treble getting out of hand, resulting in a bigger bass experience. I’ll go into more detail on the comparisons below though.

Sound Quality

This being a first impression, I am not going to go into too much detail on the sound quality but I will call out some broad strokes I noticed.

Vocals

As I mentioned above, the Legato has a really great, natural timbre and it shows in the vocal quality. Vocals sounds slightly recessed in the mix but are not muddy or veiled. The overall warmth of the IEM presents itself by adding a sweet richness to vocals which works really well for vocals that operate in the lower registers. Vocals in the upper registers however can come across a bit dull and could use a bit more air than is present. The detail retrieval is good for being such a bass heavy IEM, especially at this price. Overall I need more time before I can finalize my opinion on the vocals but initial impressions are pretty good!

Strings

With the big mid bass presence, strings replay has a bit of boom associated with it. It’s unavoidable imo and may turn people off but I appreciate the added character, especially since this IEM isn’t going for accuracy. Even with the boom strings sound pretty accurate and come through very clearly.

Percussions

Percussions shine with this IEM. Bass is big and textured so drops and 808s are coming through in their full glory. Kick drums give a good bang while not losing their bite and cymbals surprisingly don’t get lost in the mix although sometimes you might have to look for them, especially if you mostly listen to IEMs with elevated treble

Comparison to Rosefinch

Vocals

Vocals are my least favorite thing about the Rosefinch. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it until I compared them to the Legato but the Rosefinch vocals com across as artificial to me. The elevated treble gives a sense of air that can work really well on some tracks but on most tracks I listened to vocals came across either slightly metallic, hollow or underwater.

Strings

Strings on Rosefinch and Legato were similar but notes were a bit thinner on the Rosefinch

Percussions

This on was interesting because I think the replay on both of these sets is pretty close at roughly the same volume, however the Legato can be turned up a lot more because of the subdued treble compared to the Rosefinch and when the volume goes up the Legato bass comes alive!

EDIT:
Also I wanted to see how close I could get to the Maestro Mini (from memory) so I EQ’d a sub bass boost and mid bass cut to match MM bass FR and wow! It opened up the vocals and maybe got me to maybe 80-90% of the MM!

This is a great write up, so soon too! Thanks! The Legato sounds great.

Thanks! I forgot to call out that the fit is not great for my ears. The shell is pretty big and the nozzle is kind of long so I have to use very shallow tips to get a stable fit.

Good to know! My luck has been good with chonk so far (Volt, Blessing twins, Szalayi, DM8) but not always (unlistenable issues with 3DT and Mest)

On a lark, I bought the Topping DX1. It was $89 on Amazon, which seems like a pretty good deal. It uses the AK4493S DAC chip, and decodes up to 32-bit/384kHz PCM. It delivers 280mWx2 @32Ω and 51mWx2 @300Ω of power, and has a high low gain switch on the back, plus 2-ch RCA out, since it is technically a DAC. It runs off the USB type B input that provides the input audio as well.

I have really enjoyed the other AKM DAC I own ( 7HZ 71 ), and this has the same smooth sound quality, which I would describe as having a hint of warmth.

If I wanted more power, for about $100 a Schitt Magni+ or xDuoo MT-602 if I wanted tubes, would both be good. That said, if you want a nice DAC that can power IEMs, and many headphones, I am really liking the DX1, and it has more than enough power for all of my gear.

How did ypu like the SZA, I am thinking about picking a used set up?

You make really curious and interested in Legato

I had them only briefly but it was all positive
fantastic surrounding bass (large live venue bass) and very clear vocals.

I didn’t realize this was Head-fi!!!

Since when did it become a greater charge to ask for explanations and evidence than to actually make concrete & correct statements from the get go
? Are someone’s (or more pertinantly our friend’s/familiar faces) feelings more important than facts even if their propositions are incorrect? Are we giving participation trophies here
?

Correcting or asking for explanation is not akin to a gotcha moment - I was always taught to be accountable - that if you make a public assertion be prepared to be able to defend it or perhaps don’t comment in the first place. In a subjective hobby being able to relatably communicate why you think a certain way is the only means of joint understanding we can have.

@VIVIDICI_111 may be mad that someone has disagreed with him and asked him for more, or atleast relevant, information - as the links provided actually do not back up his controversial claims or have, in the main, content even relevant to the topic. Not only does he hold himself out as a reviewer - I, for one, enjoy @VIVIDICI_111 youtube reviews and so I can see how a forum visitor would make the assumption of him being someone that has deep experience & understanding of the industry - but he was the one who replied to the OP to make the claims in the first place.

Many come to forums such as this one to learn things from people they believe have greater knowledge and so to just be outright dismissive to save ego is not a great look (atleast to this one outside observer) or one that helps audiophiles not be seen as snakeoil shilling dogmatists.

Surely if we are critiqing the tone of @darkgod5 we should be doing the same when @VIVIDICI_111 makes comments that the OP is talking out of his ass, hasn’t even read the links, hasn’t understood them, questions what he means by technicalities etc

That’s just my 2 cents - I have no skin in this game past how this appeal to authority/familiar is reading and how I wish this particular characteristic of the hobby was absent from HiFiGuides.

Glad you like them! But I know for a fact that you didn’t actually read it by the click amount from the link so idk what you mean by your quote below? Edit: Wrongfully assumed!

These screenshots were taken just a few moments ago (I refreshed again just to double check but the click numbers are still the same).

Sure, but most also just come here to validate their own beliefs, for example I linked him Sharur’s video and he said it was pseudoscience lol.

I apologize for the bluntness, but just speaking facts. Anyways, the original comment was regarding crin and the wisdom of the crowd; OP also failed to provide anything really for his own stance (not even sure what it is?) aside from “oh I trust crin and other people” which makes no sense when it’s implied he doesn’t trust other reviewers who actually knows more than “the crowd”. Great timing because Sharur dropped another banger that he probably thinks is “pseudoscience”:

Anyhow, I definitely don’t want this place to end up like Head-fi like you said filled with drama and stuff. So, let’s just leave the conversation as it is. I apologize for adding oil to the flame. Cheers.

Really gracious to end the conversation like that - appreciated the rational take chap :+1: keep up with the good YouTube reviews.

Just to address the below:

Sorry to burst the assumption bubble but this is not the first time or place these articles have been posted. Nor as someone who picks up AES - as keeping up with part of my precious work - the first time I have seen them.

No point spending that amount of time rereading something I am familiar with.

Anyone interested in measurements will have read the first link and be an avid reader of Dr Sean Olive - again these do not touch on technicality measuring.

The distortion and group delay articles have been covered over at ASR and I am sure you are aware do not factor into IEMs.

The Pubmed article was in reference to HRTF positioning and would not affect technicalities - just individual perception - nor is it addessed as a core part of the research.

Happy to speak on any matter privately if you want - also happy to try to push for ways to infer technicalities from measurements - but currently these are all ad hoc and anecdotal - nothing concrete.

Glad we can try to promote and make good science open in this forum in any event :+1:

Thank you man

That makes a lot more sense! Thanks for the clarification, and sorry for the assumption.

Again it all comes back to the definition of “technicalities”; although not directly, the links do provide insight on what it could be. Imo individual perception and HRTF affects sound perception and therefore “tech”, and distortion is relevant since there are occurrences where BAs distort affecting overall sound perception.
