IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

Yes. It all depends on the library. But strangely, I listen to a lot of dynamic metal as a main genre, and for me there is no lack of mid-bass! But…I’m not a basshead and for me this mid/sub bass ratio is perfect. If had more midbass would have spoiled my listening pleasure. So the IE600 are really not for basshead, but the bass is very good!

@cal_lando Wow, seems like you’re the person that could give me a hand. I’ve had RSV a few months ago and quite like them, but what i was missing from them? Definitely some sub-bass rumble, more treble brightness and bigger headroom. I aggre that mid-bass from RSV is solid and there’s too much softness from their sub frequencies. Mids were perfection IMO. Imaging was solid but again the stage was a little bit closed. As a new IEM i’m considering Symphonium Meteor and Sennheiser IE600.

My worries about Meteor: similar weakness on the sub-bass (but looks better on the graph), treble extension seems amazing but might be too dark?

My worries about IE600: Lacks of mid-bass (I want at least RSV level), too elevated treble (I like brighter treble but sibilants means automatic no-go iem).

Could you write down some thoughts ? I’d be grateful

Oof thats a tough one… the three have their pros and cons. Neither the Meteor or the IE600 are going to give you the same experience as the RSV.

While the Meteor’s aren’t dark and have good treble extension, vocals aren’t going to be as energetic and forward as the RSV and IE600. There is more bass in the Meteor than the RSV IE600, especially in the mid bass. However the bass in the Meteor is drier and doesn’t bunch as hard. While the IE600 has less mid bass I would say the mid bass texture is closer to the RSV than the Meteor. The IE600 will definitely be brighter and cleaner than the RSV although I don’t find them sibilant.

In either case you will lose the magical mids and warmth the RSV brings. If you are looking for something more V (more sub bass and brighter) than the IE600 is going to be a better move. If you are looking to really up the mid bass than you are better off with the Meteor.

I’ll throw a 3rd set in the mix for you. The Maestro Minis are a great option imo. They are a good mix between the RSV and IE600. You get a cleaner replay and better details with the MM coming from the RSV plus serious bass (including mid bass).

Thieaudio Monarch MKI Review

So this will actually be my final formal review. I have some other sets im listening to but don’t have the time to get them all written down. Unfortunately the final one happens to be my least favorite of the sets I have reviewed so far. While there is nothing objectively bad about this set, it just does not work with my preferences and library very well. So without further ado here is the Monarch MKI review!

Sound Profile: Bass bumped bright neutral or V, I can’t tell

Overview

Originally I was really excited about the Monarch but it quickly faded as I started getting to genres where it just wasn’t up to the task. The biggest issue with this set for me is that mid bass tuck. It’s extremely noticeable and causes two issues for me; the first is that it thins out notes a little too much and staccatos become too sharp and in your face, especially when you crank the volume. The second is the cut is too deep into the bass frequencies, leaving not much low end to support the elevated upper mids and treble. Vocal clarity is very good and technicalities are good for the price but overall it’s a pass for me and my library.

Details

Treble

Monarch is more focused on the upper range and it really shines up here. It’s got a great amount of air without feeling overdone like on the Mest MKII. Details come through well even at lower volumes. The space feels pretty open and expansive and imaging is very good. Even with the extended treble the upper harmonics of percussions such as cymbals sound natural, however staccatos do shoot you in the ear at times.

Midrange

String and wind instruments and vocals lack some body but otherwise sound clean and natural. They have great extension without sounding artificially airy or frayed. They also occupy a good space in that they are not too forward or too recessed. Percussion instruments do sound particularly thin and lack the bunch from the mid bass that is needed to make them sound natural and prominent.

Mid bass

Audible but lacking body. You have to really crank the volume to get much mid bass however the treble becomes too unbearable before the mid bass can really show up. When it does come through its a clean and tight bass.

Sub bass

It does have a sub bass bump which gives a bit of support in the low end to not back the whole replay sound shrill however for my library it just isn’t enough. Even though its bass boosted I think it doesn’t go far enough to balance the rest of the FR out.

Genres

Below are my rankings for how this set plays each genre. These are based on my general enjoyment of the replay for some songs that fall in each category and is therefore very subjective and may not represent the category as a whole. If you have any questions as to what songs I listened to for each category feel free to ask!

Pop - 8/10
Rap - 6/10
Hip Hop - 5/10
R&B - 7/10
Latin trap/reggaeton - 6/10
House/EDM - 7/10
Country - 8/10

Sorry to hear that you went out on a low note. Especially when the low notes were the ones lacking :smirk: :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Edit: Apologies as I didn’t fully notice the review said MKI. My thought below was for the MKII. I don’t want to steer any wrong as I’ve never heard the MKI though I’d imagine I’d have similar thought.

This was my issue with them. I love me some midbass and, like you mention, cranked the volume to compensate for its lack of. Which brought the treble to extremely fatiguing levels for me. It was fine at low volumes but, then I just found the overall presentation extremely boring. I get we all have different preferences and I respect that however, the Monarch MKII has been my biggest disappointment of the IEMs I’ve heard. Mainly because it was so hyped and I knew little of my preferences when I bought it. Though I can see where many would enjoy it.

I think this assessment is totally fair. I haven’t really said this publicly, but I actually put a 200 filter over the nozzle opening on the Monarch’s about 3 weeks ago and haven’t looked back since. There was something dirty about modding or EQing the monarch’s. I think it was a subconscious thing. Telling my self, if I mod or EQ them, I’d be the idiot that paid all this money for an IEM that needs further adjustment. But I’ve come to terms with it. I too found my self cranking the volume up to get some more mid bass, leading to eventual fatigue. I just had to fix it. A simple 200 filter actually did the trick quite nicely.

Updated my comment. Apologies as I read MKII. Never have heard the MKI. On another thought.

I’d never be able to bring myself to mod such an expensive set no matter how simple or nondestructive it is.

Yeah, based on the graph the MKIi would be slightly less offensive to me but not by much.

I miss Chris Farley. Just wanted to put that out there. Dude was super funny and he really took the whole physical comedy thing to another level. RIP Big Guy!

TinHiFi P1 Max “Panda” Review

Alright, so I know I said I was done but this IEM blew me away enough that I felt it was my duty to do a review on it. The P1 Max has been out for a while and is not a particularly hyped set, coming out during the tail end of Planar Era (which was subsequently followed by the 2DD Era), it is one that I was excited to hear due to @GooberBM and @MMag05 's enthusiasm of the set and I gotta say, it did not disappoint! This is the only set out of the all the ones I got to test that has me actively looking for it on the used market.

Sound Profile: warm neutral

Overview

Totally worth it 1000x! It’s so smooth and warm yet clear and articulate. The vocals remind me of the IE600 except slightly warmer and with less shimmer and detail. It’s definitely mid bass which makes it a good compliment to the IE600 as well. It’s like a slightly warmer and smoother IE600 with a mid bass emphasis instead of a sub bass emphasis. This is pretty much an instant buy at under $100 and even at full price they are worth it.

Details

Treble

You don’t reach for the panda if you are looking for treble. The name of the game is smooth here and with that comes a narrow stage, a more intimate presentation and less air overall. Although it leads warmer it still manages to stay surprisingly clear and resolving.

Midrange

As I mentioned in the overview, the mids remind me a lot of the IE600 which I love. The only vocals I prefer over the P1 Max and the IE600 would be the RSV. They are actually a good in between. The present like the IE600 but are warmer like the RSV (although not as warm). As for instruments they are definitely colored a tad by the overall warmth but they don’t sound off or necessarily incorrect. More just that they are a bit more mellow, with less bite.

Mid bass

Mid bass has all types of texture. It hits with good physicality and decent speed which makes for a fun time with certain tracks. The nice thing about the mid bass is that it only comes when it’s called.

Sub bass

Sub bass is not elevated over the mid bass which is my preference but in this case I don’t feel like I am missing anything. I think the Lower sub bass quantity in this case works because of the warmth and smoothness of the rest of the signature. I will say I do miss the sub bass for things like kick drums as I feel the hits come off a bit too soft.

Genres

Below are my rankings for how this set plays each genre. These are based on my general enjoyment of the replay for some songs that fall in each category and is therefore very subjective and may not represent the category as a whole. If you have any questions as to what songs I listened to for each category feel free to ask!

Pop - 8/10
Rap - 7/10
Hip Hop - 7/10
R&B - 8/10
Latin trap/reggaeton - 7/10
House/EDM - 6/10
Country - 7/10

Note: I noticed a lot of similarities between the IE600 and the Panda. Ultimately I feel like the Panda is a smoother, more neutral IE600 which makes it a great complimentary set.

1.Tom Sawyer by Rush
2. Coming back to Life by Pink Floyd
3. Get over It by Eagles

These three are my testing tracks for any IEMs.

Overall I’ll give Rock a 7/10

it definitely replays more euphoric rock better than classic crunchy hard rock. Something about the classic rock comes across clean, dry and tight and for me I prefer my rock a little more in your face and loose.

Coming back to Life and any Pink Floyd sounds really good with this set. Get over It was good and didn’t suffer from the dryness but Tom Sawyer came across dry and thinner than I would have liked.

Anybody here have any experience with Custom Art custom ear tips?

Are they any special? I have the regular ones but using Springtips most of the time :slightly_smiling_face:

I would hope so, for $70 you’d have tips that would fit on most IEMs I would think and fit your inner-ear perfectly.
