IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

Comparing to the Variations and Top is odd especially because they say the tuning is tied yet it’s very different

That was my experience with it too.

The P1 Max got me to pull the S12 out a bit more, which is a good thing. Since I hadn’t been using it much in the last few months. The Olina SE and Kai had taken over the hard rock duties, and it is good to have some company back in the rotation again.

^^^^ This video shows that normal people are not normal.
Actually, this video doesn’t prove anything except that you can watch it for fun!

TBH “normal folk” don’t know or understand how important a good seal is when it comes to tip’s…I reckon if you spent a day with same folk trying out different tips and sizes the outcome would be a whole lot different…that’s my 2 pence worth anyhoo :man_shrugging:

This is a great point and could definitely account for the differences described

When I first started it took me a long time for sure, it didn’t help that I started out on the Tin T2. Then for a while I always assumed I needed S/XS and deeply inserted, but that actually rarely gets the right seal for me.

You can slap a HP on any noggin and expect a decent seal (yeah I know glasses and head shape outliers have issues) but it took me along time to learn what tips work with my sets, size, bore and material etc…it ain’t science it’s just try it for yourself and see what tips works with that particular set.

Seems people prefer single DD over BA tonality.
Funny video.

Sometimes I wonder how many IEMs sold because they were “off” in the beginning of the journey. At the time I didn’t even know so many aftermarket tips existed, that tip rolling was a thing or even the importance of a good seal. It wasn’t until much later I also discovered some IEMs require a different size tip for me to achieve a good seal.

Also, this video doesn’t take things like tuning preferences into account. If you give me an IEM that isn’t seated well and has a tuning I wouldn’t like to begin with, it doesn’t really matter how much it’s costs, I’m gonna think it sounds terrible. Conversely, give me a cheap pair of IEMs that is tuned in a way that I’d like with tips that fit and I’ll tell you it sounds better than the expensive one I just trashed.

Beyond that, I will say that over the years I have been in this hobby and tried to share it with people, it has become clear to me that the average listener by and large doesn’t care for many of the improvements in things like stagingz imaging, microdetail, dynamics, etc that many of us value in IEMs/transducers so when they listen to a pair they aren’t paying attention to many of the factors that we would think of as critical to differentiating a good value mid-fi IEM from something truly elite.

Entertaining video though! I always love the looks on people’s faces when they’re listening to new transducers for the first time. Especially so when they’re not at all sure what they’re supposed to be picking up on.

P.S. I’ve been told that when I listen I tend to cock one eyebrow and stare blankly at the ceiling. My girl makes fun of me for it all the time! :joy:

100% agree, on fit and tuning. I also think that more detailed and enhanced treble will be tiresome for most people, while we might appreciate.

Done similar experiment with headphones. Most prefer always my ZMF Aeolus over Verite, T1, LCD2C, DT770. What is special with Aeolus more warm/dark analogue like sound, fun with most music not that fatiguing. And lets not talk about price, always think it costs less.

Not surprising, after listening to harman tuned iems the more relaxed sets will sound boring.

I really don’t want this Hidizs MS5 to be good, because I don’t want to keep this on my radar.

But it looks very interesting. I want to hear more people hear this and tell me to cross it off my curiosity list

The upper treble/air is an abyss though

I don’t hear that much that far up, so it’s way less of a thing I stress over

You definitely hear past 10k

Those upper mids are too low energy for me and there is nothing up in the treble…

I hear to about 13k at comfortable levels, so really to about 11k is what I am really concerned with hearing.

That’s fair, but I’ve been getting more comfortable with relaxed pinna gains that don’t push the upper mids so forward.

Cross it off your list honestly the treble is certainly not for me. I applaud the effort on the MS5 but.

Paul Wasabii and I were having some good dialog on my discord server.

“most people are first peak, highest peak types. Raising 5k over 2k is why Olina SE exists as the OG was bright and harsh. They aren’t the first to do it, but most sets that try it sound the same to people who are sensitive to it”

I am that person treble sensitive to that area . What I get with the MS5 is forward vocals and the highs seem to try and overpower the vocals with a metalic harshness. Vocals seem to be competing with stage and clarity gets congested.

“Same here. Chu worked for some, others it was harsh. Zero works better in 5-6k with just a couple db lower so got a wider audience.”

Tried a bunch of stuff next up foam tips.
