For my vinyl brothers out there.
BlueNote has been on fire with their Blue Note Classic Series and Tone Poet Series.
If you’re just getting into jazz and are into vinyl…just buy them.
In the past few months…
Sonny Clark - Cool Struttin
Jimmy Smith - Back at the Chicken Shack
Hank Mobley - Soul Station
Art Blakey - Moanin
Joe Henderson - Page One
Cannonball Adderley - Something Else (its a Miles album)
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
Horace Silver - Songs for My Father
McCoy Tyner - The Real McCoy
Lee Morgan - The Sidewinder
The Sonny Clark, Hank Mobley, and Lee Morgan are the real standouts from a sound quality perspective. Exemplar copies of these albums. Art Blakey and Horace Silver are great places to go on that next tier, as those albums are all legit all-time sessions.
But, all from the Blue Note Classic Series of late and all are legit bangers with some of them getting damn near close to the 33’s from MusicMattersJazz that sell for hundreds at this point. When BlueNote has a sale, those are the best $18 you can spend on an record, IMO.
The Tone Poet series, a step up in quality and presentation (great gatefolds with session photos) has had some bangers lately, too. Deeper cuts from the artists, though. These, too, are damn near MusicMattersJazz 33RPM quality.
Curtis Amy - KATANGA!
Art Blakey - The Witch Doctor
Dexter Gordon - One Flight Up
Andrew Hill - Passing Ships
all recently released and sound and look incredible.
Also, Analog Productions will be releasing some choice titles throughout the rest of the year, plenty of stuff from Coltrane, Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus. Keep a look out on that. Next album from Blue Note Classic series is Dexter Gordon’s GO! session and there are cuts from McCoy Tyner and Sonny Clark from Tone Poets.
Personally, when it comes to jazz music…I just buy the record. But, these are good places to see recommendations, too.
Great time to be into jazz and into jazz vinyl.
