Just got the SMSL SU-8 DAC!

Not me… I am using Liquid Platinum and Sp200.

You and I definitely have the same equipment tastes. How do you find the SU-8 and the LP combo? Do you find the SP200 VERY different from the LP?

I find the SU-8 and SP200 not a great combo with Brightish headphones.

Since I have the LP I haven’t used the sp200 anymore. I’m looking for a RNHP and will eventually sell the sp200.

It’s worth keeping both amps around IMO. As shane mentioned, bright headphones work great on that amp (sp200). Also, the RNHP is a tiny bit anemic for some planars.

Interesting.

What are you playing music with? Im using Foobar. Perhaps a replay gain issue?

I got a question, so i want to connect the smsl su-8 to a mac mini 2011 via coax to the headphone jack on the mac mini i need a digital to analog converter right?

Huh? The SU-8 is the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC).
You can plug it via USB.
The headphone jack is also an optical output, so if you want to use the optical out you need to plug this into the “headphone jack / optical out”.

Then you need speakers or a headphone amp, obviously. :stuck_out_tongue:

that is all clear to me, I was just thinking about if it was possible to connect the two through coax.
thx

Oh! Sorry.
Coaxial is just another way of sending digital audio, just through a wire.
You’d need something like this.

Enjoying my SMSL SU-8 tonight. I replaced this in my main system with the Bifrost 2 recently. The Bifrost 2 was a noticeable upgrade with some music if you listen intently and analytically. For the money I spent, I thought the difference was very subtle.

Tonight I got and assembled (tough job without the right tools!) a new table for my office. The SU-8 has just been sitting around for a few weeks and tonight I inserted it into office chain, replacing the Topping D30. What a Difference! It sounds like a large improvement and it should for being more than triple the price! This was what I expected with the BF2 upgrade, which was also more than triple the price of its predecessor.
It is a great pairing with my Liquid Spark amp feeding the Vanatoo Transparent Zeroes. :+1:

I really enjoyed my DAC too and Honestly had no issues with it.
I gave my DAC and some inexpensive Hybrid tube pieces, an amp and eq to my buddy along with a like new pair of HP’s and he was blown away by the difference over his standard earbuds that came w/ his phone. He spends hours a day with his earbuds and when i callled him last he mentioned that he modifed how he normally works so he can enjoy his new set-up. The SMSl Su8 really is a solid performer.
