đŸ”¶ KOSS ESP/95x

Since it’s Christmas soon and I have WAY too much savings, I ordered some items and one of them is a pair of these (I also ordered a topping d50s dac because the dac in my schiit fulla 2 was dying and I didn’t see the point to keep it considering its specs were meh
also bluetooth!).

I heard many stories about electrostatic with these headphones and I don’t really know to which point I will enjoy them, but I do know it should compliment my 58x well as the 58x imo has very good bass and one of the recurring comments about the 59x is the bass isn’t as there as you would expect, but then many says you get much more details so that’s something I am excited for! If it gives more variety to my enjoyment, I would be happy like I don’t intend them to replace my main headphones, but compliment it.

Really can’t wait to try them

Well hope you like them, I don’t think you could have made a better choice for a new estat under 1k imo :+1:

They are awesome! But EQ is your friend

If you need it that is, I think they are pretty great without eq as well

Personal preference. I find them a little thin on their own.

Yeah, I guess they could be lacking bass for some, but after I get used to the sound of them it’s not super lacking imo. I guess I also do know they will be on the tad thin side since it’s an estat. It’s not as thin as some stax sound lol

How do they compare against the SR 007 in terms of their low-end and timbre?

Well, I think the 007mk2 is on the next level and worth the upgrade imo. I think the low end is easily better on the 007mk2 and the timbre is good but not really to the level as a proper dynamic or planar timbre

I think the esp95x is better than the l300 and l500 with the appropriate smaller energizer (unless you like a mainly unnatural and very light and airy sound), but everything above that is kinda a step up, although you can run the 95x on a better energizer and see a nice performance bump (although it might be an expensive amp upgrade and you would have to get a koss to stax adapter)

I actually just tend to keep it simple so I don’t really EQ much.

Btw, definitely never changing the energizer because I won’t pay 150 usd for
essentially an electrically compatible wire, that sounds even worse than the 1k usd monitor stand apple put up lol.

By energizer it’s not the power brick its the whole amp unit (just to clarify). Also yeah electrostatic amps get pretty ridiculous both in performance and price lol

oh I know, I am referring to the adapter required if you want to use a stax amp which
have compatible pinout
and an adapter would just join the wires
it definitely shouldn’t cost as much like I can get the energizers costing a lot, but not the cable.

I have no intention of upgrading the amp. It is what It is.
I “have” to EQ these all over. It is just personal preference and we all hear differently.

I am not sure I would keep them without my Loki.

Looking forward to your thoughts.

Ah, yeah you could probably diy an adapter for a fair bit cheaper

For EU folks

the 95x is incredibly cheap right now
 $290

Even if you don’t want it just buy it and resell it for profit lol

Has anyone replaced the original power brick? And what other mods can you do with these? Mine will be arriving soon, hopefulyl before x-mas. Dekoni pads seem nice, but one guy on web said the sound will get more intense and less wide. Personally would prefer more wide, than less. But this will be an interesting experience.

Vesper audio makes some nice esp950 pads

So due to the Tapes iem I was very curious on and EST headphone, since these were 400 I snagged them
bad life decisions lol. So after about 5 hours of use I have some feedback. The cups are HUGE
And I have to move the headphones in a slightly odd position to get a decent seal. I prefer them with a sub-bass bump. Also imaging is fantastic, and soundstage is very good as well, it feels like a larger stage than the dt1990s and the imaging is so good in the larger stage that you get superior separation from what I could tell. The treble stood out to me like on the tape, inoffensive but packed full of detail. Mids have a slight shout but it really reminds me of the 6xx so I love the mids!! Super light for the long session, only the size was awkward and unpleasant. The amp worked great and I maxed it and used my 788 as a pre and it worked great. If you are an enthusiast I strongly suggest trying EST drivers at some point. I will be on a mission to fix the placement and will be looking into a linear dc supply or a stax amp later on, but I will not be buying dynamics or planars again, the dt1990 will work for everything else(or change of pace) going forward. #staxbro (poor)

Edit: to solve potential pad seal issues consider adding thin foam in between the pad and the baffle to push the pad out slightly, it works great for sealing the back of ear to back area.

I will be continuing to listen to them and compare with my 58x tomorrow, but after several hours of listening, I clearly notice a trend so I might as well tell my first day of listening impression to them.

I do not feel I have headphones/earspeakers/stereophone whatever the heck you want to call it on my head. I am not talking about comfort (they are comfortable though), I am talking about sound, this is how immersive, full and open these are. Open as in you could almost remove the cover and it wouldn’t change much like I was astonished to have them blasting, remove them from my head and only notice a slight change in volume, that’s how open they are. They are so open, my pair of 58x sounds like a pair of closed back headphones!

But back to why I am saying I do not feel them when I talk about sound. There’s a saying I heard multiple time by audio enthusiast that when you get into this hobby, there’s a point where you stop to listen to the gears and you JUST listen to the music because there’s a point where the gears are so good it’s as if like they weren’t there. The 95x felt exactly this way: almost ANYTHING I could have possibly thrown at it felt like I was listening to the song and I wasn’t even focused on the headphones. Like when stax says earspeakers and koss says stereophone instead of headphones, they are not lying to you: it’s almost speakers on your head.

The soundstage rivals my old pair of 598, but the reason I stopped to listen to the 598 as soon as I got my 58x is because the clarity was SO MUCH better on the 58x, the 598 just sounded garbage in comparison. While the 58x is a very intimate experience, the 95x is just WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDEEEE open to the world, BUT and this is where it blew my mind, without sacrificing much imaging. You can definitely notice the positioning of sound, it’s just not necessarily the focus of this headphone because like I said, the soundstage is wide so you won’t hear whispers in your ear, but you can definitely have no trouble telling what instruments plays where in that wide soundstage.

On to the crux of these headphones: mids and treble clarity. God
these are so detailed either I had stuff like drums or cymbals SLAP me OR I was able to hear details so easily while I had to try to hear them before. Zeos said that the mids and highs were done “so intently” on these and I now get why: they’re really clear I would even say crisp sometimes.

However, this headphone has an achilles heel: the bass. It’s there, but it is very lacking. I tried the earthbound ost on both my 58x and my 95x and the 58x was just plain better on bassy tracks because you could just feel the bass while as the 95x, you would occasionally feel it, but most of the time, it just doesn’t do much. Interestingly, on that same ost, it revealed how much details the 95x retrieved because for some reasons, this ost gave me surprising results on the both time I upgraded which is interesting

So, are these better than the 58x?

No, they are different
which is EXACTLY what i was looking for. I now have a pair of headphones that is very intimate with awesome imaging and bass as well as a pair with wide soundstage, good imaging and insane clarity while lacking bass. They compliment each other well which is ideal as I wanted more variety in my music and I got it.

Quick note about build and comfort. Build is okay I am not bothered by the plastic, not even the energizer, it’s more the headband because it doesn’t affect comfort, but you can FEEL something inside of it near the center which just makes it awkward to hold in my hands. Comfort is superb, it does take time to adjust to the sheer size of the driver which VERY likely contributed to this amazing combination of soundstage + imaging, but it’s okay, the pads are soft enough so it’s not noticeable. Oh and I LOVE the cable, it flexes nicely

Are they worth 400 OR 500 usd? Yes, just being able to have a headphones that feels like you’re not wearing one is worth this. I would however recommend 2 things: 1: get a dac with digital volume control because the dual wheels can be annoying what I did is I just maxed it and limit it on my d50s with the remote (I love this dac!) and 2: I would honestly complement it with a headphone of yours that has good bass or at least is more dark because I find the 95x quite bright.

Really happy about them

It actually lines up pretty well tuning wise with the 650 lol. People used to call the 950 an estat 650

Well glad you like it :+1:

Also those are some REAL estats, not the half ass stuff in the tapes lol
