Let's talk about computers

Yeah I watched that one as well, along with Bitwit’s video and Hardware Canucks. I know the basic process of it, is just that my cable management could have been better than the one that I did.

Would have been easier if my PSU’s stock cables are pliable and soft, and not as stiff and hard.

Custom cables can help but they can be pricey so I have to do whatever I can to make it at least appealing to the eyes.

yeah it sucks when stock cables are proper stiff, Just gotta brute force everything. Tho again it doesnt have to be perfect just remove what u can see or make what u cant remove look good. Good cable managment doesnt mean u cant see them

Remember a few weeks ago I said that Windows did an update and broke the Edge Browser? Welll…

It did another update the other day and now everything is fixed! Go figure. In fact, the laptop seems to be running better as a whole, so score one for M$. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take it!

“So AMD then has picked up the money gun that NVIDIA just put down after it got bored of it, and will now be spraying money out of it’s own rear-end, much like a hippo would do when it has to go to the bathroom.”

Come on Steve, tell us how you really feel.

I got curious how cheap it would get into something with ECC for my NAS setup… an hour or so later I’ve got a Xeon, motherboard, and RAM on the way for $300 shipped with half of the money being in the RAM. Gotta love how fast hardware depreciates in cost, yet is still useful.

I was running my NAS on a first gen Ryzen. Word of advice, don’t. Even when you tweak everything to get it stable, you’re always waiting for something to go sideways.

What platform are you running the NAS on? My Ryzen experience with TrueNAS Core has been extremely smooth.

@Blackscreen r5 1600, not the AF refresh that was basically a zen+

first gen is just a bit too finicky for my liking, especially with memory which is exactly where i least want problems.

It’s smooth enough after a ton of tweaking to run months at a time, but I decided to go for something safer.

Sorry, I meant what software platform.

Unraid. I’ve had no issues on the software side.

Oh good! more reason for me to avoid that godforsaken beta-testing OS for a while.

Few more pieces of the puzzle. Went with FTW3 because, it has a WB for the LHR card or at least EKWB confirmed that their block fits. Custom cables next month. Which combo should I choose? Luckily that ASUS psu came with a -20% CableMods coupong lol

EVGA has been my go to manufacturer for Nvidia GPUs (and power supplies for that matter) for years now, and will be until their US customer service proves me wrong choosing so. I’ve had them pre-emptively ship me a power supply due to a recall, replace a GTX 1070 with a GTX 1080, among other positive experiences. Just make sure to register the card on their site, it will make life way easier later on.

Yeah, the Samsung B-Die requirement for 3200 MHz was kind of sucky for X370. Memory speed wasn’t a priority for me on that box so I am running 2666 MHz on it. I had Unraid for a long time and finally decided to switch over to FreeNAS/TrueNAS when I started running a VMWare homelab:

The hardware itself has held up pretty well. It’s an R7 1700X on an ASUS Prime Pro X370, I’m running the drives off a pair of LSI MegaRAID 9201-8i’s and have 10GbE on a Mellanox Connect-X NIC.

Grab some coffee/tea/alcohol, there’s some reading to be done here.

What-the-actual- :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:? To be clear, I’m not surprised that this was going on. But the extent? And how blatant it was? This needs to end with at least Google broken up.

All of the big tech companies need to be shot down to force them back to earth. The iRobot-thinking of “we are saving humanity”-BS they are all paddling internally needs to be ended.

One of the side effects of NewEgg’s forced bundling in their shuffle is that the unwanted stuff gets listed on eBay at a nice discount. So if anyone is in the market for a new motherboard or monitor, you may want to check ebay. Just verify it won’t explode before buying it lol

Intel Alder Lake specs/pricing/details is now officially live.

A PCIE slot quick release button? Good on you ASUS for coming up with another legitimately useful feature.
