Let's talk about computers

I still want to wait for next gen to decide what platform to build my next rig with. I can do upgrades to my first gen Ryzen system, but for that next BIG step requiring a change in platforms, I want to see what’s about to come our way, and see if they can kick it back into gear.

Well either way if you are coming from 1st gen ryzen aside from the storage GPU and maybe RAM you’ll go for new stuff, so dont sweat it too much. That being said going for used once next gen hits well give you the best bang for buck - in most cases its a 15 to 20% up lift, but you can get things used or “last gen” for 25-40% less than the new gen - I bough my 5800X for 300$ new, just had to wait for when 12th gen came out (also it was black Friday),

I mean… Golden sample 1600. I can go 4.1Ghz @ 3.3V stable. If I push the voltage up higher (about 1.4V) and keep things nice and chilly, I can go 4.125Ghz, though that’s really pushing the limits. Biggest thing I wanna upgrade is the one thing everyone but scalpers, bots, and miners have been struggling to get their hands on, as I’m running a RX 570 4GB. Otherwise, 2x8GB CL15(?) RAM. I’d like to repurpose this thing into an HTPC or home media server once I build the next one.

Keep rocking if you feel its working for you, and from what i see right now GPUs have dropped to a fairly “reasonble” price, you can find on amazon a 3070TI for around 750$, its still 50% over MSRP of the FE version but it way less bad than it was a few months ago

The GPU is hitting pretty… Eh levels. More in the range of “fine, it works. Not too where I want it, but it’s functional” rather then to my satisfaction. Can’t say it’s not irritating to have some games, not even new AAA games, that I can’t reach 60fps at 1080p, even with dropping quality settings (maybe not all the way, but to levels I can deal with, particularly in more visual/environmental games rather then fast paced fps/competitive titles).

Forgot to put in the RAM is 2666 CL14, my bad. Couldn’t get it to go faster (probably that first gen memory controller), but I got to tighten up the timings a little.

Like @Naturallymorbid said, GPU prices have really started to come back down, and are expected to continue coming down. Just about every model is always in-stock now, and while prices are still somewhat inflated, it’s a lot better than it’s been since this whole mess started. The only thing to keep in mind is that we are on the tail-end of this GPU life-cycle and RDNA3/Lovelace will be launching sometime late Q3 or Q4 this year, and it’s expected that some pretty substantial improvements will come with them.

Of course, crypto is showing signs of trying to recover and there’s no guarantee that China won’t invade Taiwan and screw everything up there, so… :man_shrugging:

I actually might buy a 3070TI just so i can off load my 2070 Super at a higher price

5800X3D reviews are out. Interestingly GN found it’s performance to be substantially better compared to what LTT found in some cases—particularly in Far Cry 6. I wonder if it’s due to their choice RAM?

Seems like i am getting an ok price on a amd ryzen 9 5900x, 32GB 3200mhz ram, psu and 2x1tb firecuda 520 m2 drives, so i am currently looking at motherboards, coolers and a decent case to put it all inn… GFX card will have to wait a bit, even though my current 1070gtx will be the bottleneck if i go for the 5900x setup. I think that prices are still going to drop a bit for GFX cards, and here in Norway there is still availability problems on the most popular GPUs (like the 3070ti i have in my sights).

Not ideal time to buy, as new generations of CPU and GPU are around the corner, but considering that i have had my intel i7-3770k since late 2012 i don’t tend to upgrade cpu that often at least. I was almost about to upgrade 2 years ago, then Covid-19 hit and prices skyrocketed (and availability was a major issue if you could afford the mad prices). So now i’m rather trigger happy on this deal

The 3770k will be “re-purposed” as either a fileserver/remote box to log into when i am out and about, or it will end up as a media-pc (although perhaps a bit overkill for that, at least i will have to set it back to stock speed and not overclocked as it runs now). Either way it will not go to waste at least, as i think it still has life left in it still…

If you arent going small for factor i recommend the MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK, overall great board, a fair amount of connectivity with good features.

Considerably different test setups. GN uses a 3080, and a 4x8 3200 C14 kit of Samsung B-die with carefully tuned and controlled timings for everything but Alder Lake. For that they use a 2 x 16 5200 C38 kit of DDR5. It should go without saying, but we are still early days in DDR5’s life-cycle and so the timings that can be achieved are still horribly loose comparatively speaking.

LTT on the other hand, used a 3090Ti and a 2 x 16 3600 16-18-18-38 for Ryzen and a 2 x 16 5600 40-40-40-89 for Alder Lake. They also used different game settings. LTT just uses the pre-defined quality settings, while GN has a set of customized quality settings for each game that they test.

What do want to spend/not spend over? And are there any specific features that you would like the board to have? Like post-code readouts, dual BIOS support, a minimum number of M.2 slots and/or USB ports?

Seems to be heading in the direction of a ASUS AM4 TUF GAMING X570-PRO (not the cheapest, not the most expensive, but is available, and has most features i want… could have had a 3rd m.2 slot, but i guess plugging in an sata ssd for the steam library when the m.2 is full is probably not the end of the world (already have a 1tb and a 512gb sata ssd for games and storing the music locally etc in my current setup, so i was always planning on just moving those drives over to the new computer anyway).

As for a computer case, i seem to be going for a Be Quiet! pure base 500dx, seems like a good value and looks ok (the fractal design and corsair ones i have been looking at are quite a bit more expensive).

Dont know how pricing is in you part of the world but here another few options “just-in-case” (God i hate myself for that pun)

  • Corsair 4000D airflow (i use it, i liked the esthetics the best)
  • Antec NX800
  • Corsair iCUE 220t Airflow
  • Phanteks P500A

I was looking at that, and it is just a tiny bit more expensive, but not in stock where i get most of the other parts, and adding shipping form an aditional shop (everything is bought online) means i just went for the Be Quiet case. I get free shipping from the store i ended up buying the case at, since i also bought a few other itmes there and they have free shipping when you buy for a certain amount.

Since my current computer case is a corsair c70 vengance, any case for the new computer will be a step up on the aesthetics. In my defence it was bought just after i was getting into FPS with Battlefield 3 (after a few years break from FPS type games), and the whole army look had a certain appeal

The 500DX is a solid choice dont sweat it, personally i like having options so that why i suggested.

The funny story about my case is when i built in my 4000D they only had white (or wait 2-3 months), which i was very apprehensive about. But after a bit i said “Fuck it” bought sleeve extensions and fans to match (also painted my GPU bracket to match), turned out awesome

That looks like a very clean build :+1:

Tried to go with black components, and when i later get a gfx card, i wil lhave to try to match it up with the rest, but i hope black and putting the rgb to orange (like in the press photos of the 500dx) will give it a nice look. That said, i’ve always gone for function over form, so the result might not be that amazing :stuck_out_tongue: Never cable managed my old computer, and it looks a right mess

Clean build right there and I like the white lighting and white build that you have set for yourself right there. Come to think of it, back then PCs with a white/gray colors were more common back then, nowadays it’s more common for most users to have a black color scheme for their builds, and I have been seeing white builds that are rare for me (for me at least, I am sure there are people out there have seen a lot of white builds more common than me.) Overall, I like the minimalist look and single lighting, not much of a fan of the rainbow puke look.

I am not sure about that, honestly.
Maybe paint the case matt-black instead of getting one of the new plastic-fantastic garbage boxes.

i still will have to get a case for my old HW as i am planning to use it still, so the less work will be to build the new components into the new case… I am not that fuzzed about it, and as long as it works i am going to be a happy camper anyway :stuck_out_tongue:
