Unfortunately QD OLED monitors are only coming in the ultrawide format for a while. It’s a shame because they are releasing a 55" monitor, but it’s a mini-LED VA panel.
Yeah I guess they figured most who’re shopping for this class of monitor would want ultra wide. I’ve been wanting to try one out anyway so it works for me
Personally i dont miss widescreens - after moving from a widescreen to a larger monitor (34 ultrawide to a 32 inch 16:9), the vertical real estate is helps out a ton and to see a fully see an ultrawide you loose a lot of your field of vision. I remember a youtube video talking about movie screens and how their aspect worked - if its a curved its 2.3 : 1 if its flat its 1.85 : 1 ( i could be wrong i just remember)
It’s probably more to do with the manufacturing process for displays. They’re printed out in big sheets with percentages for each screen size, there’s usually a bit left over, my guess is that’s the ultrawide section.
That’s why I want the 55", but QD-OLED. You don’t use the whole display for one application, it’s like having multiple displays but without the headaches and incompatibilities (especially with portrait mode), and with the added benefit of making any number of configurations on the fly.
Some games are really awesome when they completely fill your field of view though, especially ones that have a lot of verticality.
55 (im assuming 4k) might be a little too large, you have to have it a fairly deep desk and you have to scale the UI to 150%, which is a little buggy with some programs
Wall mounted. The old standards of viewing distance are absurd (and don’t really apply to PC use cases anyway). RTings still has a chart showing you need to sit 4.5 feet away from a 32".
I don’t use scaling, on a screen like this (currently 43") you split up the area with FancyZones so each section is like a 22-27" display and being a little over 3 feet away, it’s easy to make out the taskbar, etc. at 100% scale.
The only thing is watching movies, I have to move back about a foot to watch comfortably.
My system went through quite a few changes in the last year, even more so on the last week.
My hardware list:
- MoBo: ASRock Fatal1ty X370 Professional Gaming
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
- CPU Cooler: Cooler Master ML360 Mirror
- RAM: 2x 16gb G.Skill Ripjaws V @3200mhz
- GPU: XFX Speedster QICK319 RX 6700 XT
- PSU: Adata XPG Core Reactor 850w
- Storage: XPG SX8100 1TB NVME + Toshiba N300 6TB
- Chassis: Asus TUF GT501
And it looks like this:
Looks pretty fly, two thing i might suggest
-
extension cables for your GPU cables, you can get some 10-15$ if you only get the GPU ones (you can buy a whole kit but you other cables are a lot less visible. Maybe get Black and red to fit the theme
-
The hard drive really sticks out so maybe put something to fit the theme just to hide the silver (Its rough since the case doesnt have a PSU shroud
Good idea, but even better, since the Core Reactor has the same pinouts as the Corsair RMX series, i can order proper custom cables for it.
I’m thinking about that, i have a slot to put it behind the motherboard, i think i might install it in there.
And the case does have a shroud, but i didn’t use it since i wanted to show the PSU
Well if you got a shroud then leave the hard drive there (unless its a “half”) that doesn’t cover it.
I avoid custom cables mainly, its way nicer and easier to have extensions because if you ever upgrade your PSU you can still use the same extensions unlike with custom cable (with the rumors talking about extremely power hungry GPUs an upgrade might come sooner than you think).
Custom cables make sense when you cant hide or dont have the room for extensions like very small form factors or very open chassis where you can see everything
Good point, and the extensions are easier to get hold of as well, i think i might get some.
i bought these, and there is even a black and red one
Thanks for the link! The black and red one looks quite nice.
Glad I came back and re-read this, I was about to look stupid.
I went to check out the case to see if it had any options for this and was going to suggest this once I saw it did since I didn’t catch you saying this the first time I read things.
I wear my stupid like a 1000$ dollar clown suit
Got my 3080 in today, and got it installed.
First impressions, good heavens is this card massive.
Also, whoever’s job at ASUS it is to decide on the placement of plastic peels is a sadist and I’d like to have words with him.
Also, also(and I already knew this, I was just reminded of it once again), I hate the 6+2 pin.
Very lovely card though, and certainly feels like it’s worth the money.
Ya i hate tiny peels all over a card pain the arse…
I would suggest a gpu bracket, ive got an Asus Tuf 3070TI and without a bracket that thing would sag like… wel id rather not say…
A GPU bracket would certainly be a good idea. Surprisingly though, it is sitting fairly straight.
It has been a while since I posted PC related here. Nothing much of an update really, it’s still the same for now this time I am really planning to get a new SSD for my rig, also my PC needs a bit of a clean up session for it is dusty and a bit of an air blower can alleviate that problem.
If you need a blower, i use this one, pretty great for dust (inside the pc and the whole work area) Meco 8 Nozzle Air Duster Air Blower For Pc Compressed Multifunction 45000rpm Computer Laptop Keyboard Electronics Cleaning Tool - Computer Cleaners - AliExpress
One thing to note is that when you use it, hold the fans in place so they dont spin (when fans spin over their rated RPM it could damage them)
