Let's talk about computers

A toothpick or zip-tie (just stuck through, no zipping), piece of tape, etc. work nicely to block PC-fans.

Yeah I have been doing that one for a while when it comes to fans for it’s not going to be good if your fans just suddenly stopped spinning for no reason at all. Also some replacement should be done as well when it comes to my single SATA cable for the SATA port seems damaged, I don’t want to risk of it doing something bad to my SSD, regardless if it has a few storage or not. I do need to get a new 1TB SSD so I can reduce the amount of storage that I have in my rig.

My now 6 years old NAS has been full for so long, i decided to bite the bullet when i had the opportunity to get hold of a 4bay qnap at under half its normal price (it was on sale, and i had a gift card i had to use at the store).

Got expensive enough though, when i went for 4x12tb Toshiba NAS n300 disks (they where significantly cheaper than the WD reds i have previous experience with, but still…)

Ya storage is a pricey, when you hit higher volumes.
Running fully mirrored or one redundancy drive?

1 redundancy drive, but my old 4x3tb NAS (also with 1 redundancy drive) will also be a backup for all my music, photography and other important files.

I will have to look into the possibility of “syncing” some of the directories, so that the backup keeps getting updated. Being 2 different type of drives i will have to look into if there is an app i can use on one or both of them, or if doing it through windows. Never been that much into the whole storage/network side of things, as my hardware and software skills are more “windows pc end user” oriented.

Ive been looking to build a pc for my living room. Only to run wimdows media player. I know… why???. I guess its the old friend that i know inside and out. Tried other players and felt dirty and in the unknown. Looking for a nice 2 or 3 u case and low end components to keep cost down as i dont need anything high end. Logical increments recommendations are all but out of stock. Finding racmount pc cases is next to impossible. Most are super deep. Cheapest shallow one i fou d was around 15" for 200 plus bucks. Ive got several pi 4s. And kodi seems to be the only go to plauer. Any opinions would be appreciated.

And an off rant. Htpcs? What are they? They just stream vudu and netflix. Is there a legit legal friendly way to stpre dvd blu ray . 4 k discs etc? Cds are the only disc that hardware seems to say…rip it? Sure you got it.

Well, in some parts of the world (not the US), it is perfectly legal to make copys of media you bought.

In the US (if you want to keep out of legal trouble on the legal front) maybe spend the money for a mid-range HTPC on a DVD/BluRay player that can also serve media from the network.

Silverstone has some cases directly designed for HTPC use.

@Steve_Hieatzman buy/build a NAS and stick it elsewhere in the house and run Plex/Jellyfin. Then either use a streaming device of your choice on the TV or just stick a NUC on it if you want PC functionality.

Funny story…
Recently one of my Lian Li fans died, so contacted Lian li via their website(it was still under warranty).

first time (17.8) : ZERO response, not even an automatic email, wait a two days still nothing

second time( 19.8) : This time i got an automatic email (got to the spam folder but i still found it), so i wait… website says 3 business days, over a week goes by, and still nothing… no follow up, no nothing.

Third time (27.8) : i figured i try one more time before starting bitching on social media. Fill everything out - send it. automated response, no follow up

At this point im like WTF is going on, no way in hell that a company this big ghosts its costumers otherwise people would be talking about it. I get it when company make some BS up to not cover it, but not responding is wierd…

Today (29.8) i get a call from fedex, im like cool even though i dont have anything that suppose to show up via fedex. and its a damn Lian li fan… now im happy i got a replacement and everything but there has been zero contact from anyone which is bizzare

That’s quite literally the polar opposite experience to the one I had dealing Noctua’s warranty department for issues with a couple of fan replacements.

Ya exactly i had the same experience with Noctua, i lost the small metal clips that hold the fans on the CPU cooler in place, emailed them, got a replay the same day and they shipped it out to me that day, took 2 week but no problem what so ever.

With lian li it was absoute silence…

Right now finished readjusting the RGB which was bit of a pain because it was brand new it didnt match the same color as my old ones (even when set to the exact same color) the color variation is probbally due to my old ones “wearing out” and some sort of change to the RGB themselves they did in the fan.

I don’t know what happened to the USB ports of my motherboard guys, for it is like acting weird especially on the 3.0s. Back then I never had any issues with those, it only came after I air dusted my PC, issues like my ifi Zen DAC’s lights are flickering on/off quick for it seems like a power delivery issue from the USB port. Maybe I should try resetting the BIOS in order this fix this issue or is it possibly a PSU or even a motherboard issue?

Could be, but i’d try somethig a little simpler first. try using a USB hub (a powered one) see if that fixes it

Same issues as well, and I currently have a USB hub.

My immediate thought is that some dust got into the ports when you cleaned it. My second thought is that some static charge built up from the dust and somehow made it’s way to the ports. Here’s what I’d do:

Power the PC down, flip the PSU off, hold the power button down for ~30 seconds to drain the caps on the motherboard, unplug the power cord and USB cables, and then blast them with air again. See if that fixes the issue.

Just checked the going rates on cpus and the 5800x is $246 on Amazon. The 5600x is $189. Though Intel has also got some nice discounts and an upgrade path. It’s good time if you’re building a budget system.

Yeah I tried that, it is still happening unfortunately and I am kind of lost of what to do next with that issue. Oh well, might as well try resetting the BIOS to see if it’s going to work or not.

Sub $1k 3090 anyone?
