Let's talk about computers

How much storage is this? I assume its gonna be measured in PB and not TB lol.

We moved DC several times within the same company as we expanded and built new buildings. Always a welcome opportunity to fix what you messed up in the old, a reset if you will. Fortunately we were able to run dark fiber between sites most of the time and not have to bother with whatever flavor of the year was available from the ISPs.

Man was that a good day when virtualization allowed the migration across the world potentially while still live servicing requests?! So much better than the down time over a weekend back in the dark ages.

I think in 20-30 years those that have maintained more direct control over their resources will be glad they did. Right now there are far too many eggs in a few baskets in the ‘cloud’ space.

The ‘cloud’. I’ve used analogies for decades to help people relate to complex ideas but cloud is just bad as analogies go.

one sage advice i learned from system admins/ various back end support staff: Being paranoid about data is always a good thing IMHO (within reason and with a certain scope).
I have 3 backup to my data and im just a photographer (one local, cold offsite and backblaze).

3-2-1 backup strategy. :+1:

What are you backing up there? Everything? Or just photos?

In my case I got 800GB lifetime (+50gb free like everyone else can have) storage with Filen.io but I only use it for my music collection and my old photos/videos. My anime is stored in my synology nas only.

Speaking of Synology. For about a year now I’ve been running DSM 7 on an ancient i7-2600 3.4GHz with 3x16TB hybrid raid using modern drives, old 256GB SSD read-only cache…all SATA. Oh and another 16TB external for NAS to backup itself.

It’s been 100% solid. I set it up as a ‘trial’ to see if I wanted to purchase a device…I’ve not found a reason to replace my DIY setup.

Interesting, didnt know you could install DSM on other hardware.

Are you using the Synology Hybrid Raid (SHR)? That is the best thing about Synology imo. Although I really dont like the direction Synology is going with their software removals and lockdowns…so my DS423+ is my last nas from them.

Enjoying my Orange Pi 5 Plus as a NAS as well. (almost done with my HUGE guide on github.)

Is that SSD as caching, really useful for you? In my research it was just better to use it as a regular drive and for example put my docker files on that one, so the HDD noise isnt annoying me 24/7.

I dont recommend synology anymore. TerraMaster is what I would go for if I needed a finished nas. And they also have a similar hybrid raid like SHR with Synology.

Otherwise with something like OpenMediaVault (what im using on my Orange Pi) you can just install MergerFS + Snapraid to get something similar.

Um, no you can’t  and I’m not updating the OS. It does what I need and is protected externally.

Yes, SHR, though I don’t believe I’ll need more than 29TB usable for the foreseeable future so no real value to me using SHR vs. R5. The IOPS of the 3 in the array is plenty for my needs. The SSD was just why not it won’t hurt and was sitting in my spares box. Actually I have 2 of them identical but didn’t want the risk of a RW cache. A read-only cache can’t become corrupt to threaten data integrity.

It’s got 16GB ram and 1/2 is used for caching…I have it in a half rack in a back room closet so the seek noise is a non-issue for me.

Be sure to schedule data scrubbing. Bit rot is real.

Here’s the cache stats. I have no way to test without so I don’t know how much I gain but the system is blisteringly responsive for Roon and Docker running Pihole DNS.

If you wont expand, then yeah no real benefit (but also no con iirc). My main reason for loving solutions like SHR, TRAID and MergerFS/Snapraid combo is that you can mix and match with different storage sizes, makes it MUCH better for long term use since you dont need to plan what drives to buy as much.

My DS423+ got 18 (16+2gb stock) GB ram, wasnt really enough until I offloaded some stuff to my Orange Pi 5 Plus with 16GB ram.

oh yeah I have it in synology.

Bitrot is prevented with mergerfs+snapraid setup though.

Have you tried Navidrome for music server? its awesome, im using it with feishin on pc and symphonium on my phone.

Synology stats. grafana/prometheus setup is weird…my docker container data sometimes doesnt work here…

im using Beszel for my orange pi.

Homepage (https://gethomepage.dev/ ) for it.

And here are my homepage and the stuff im running on my synology.

I run HA on a RPi4 near the bluetooth sensors I need it to be able to read/bridge allowing me to access their data via Wifi as it’s too far to access BT directly.

I’ve owned lifetime Roon since 2016 and I use it on my house systems but on my phone and dap I use Qobuz and Radio Paradise mostly. Roon is integrated with HQPe upsampling to DSD. I probably wouldn’t bother in 2025 but in 2016/17 it gave me a good project. I have little interest in another music server unless Roon gives up the ghost and goes away. It’s great for music discovery and ease but not shear performance, and that’s OK.

The included monitoring utilities are enough for my needs. HA monitors it too along with the UPS supporting it. Graceful shutdowns, etc. My camera server running Blue Iris (unfortunatly only Windoze) is also supported by the UPS and shutdown via WinNUT to communicate with the NAS UPS module.

You dont use a zigbee hub with zigbee compatible smart devices? I love HA with them, I got some zigbee compatible led bulbs and I have an automation that automatically changes the color temp and brightness depending on the time of the day and I also have a motion sensor so the lights automatically turn on/off if im in the room or not.

aa yeah that is something that doesnt work with Navidrome sadly.

Yeah got one as well, I got the Eaton 3S 550VA, although since I bought it last year (with my synology) I havent actually had any outages so…feels like a waste.

I got this for my orange pi.

Seems to be super efficient as my entire orange pi 5 plus setup (1 and 2 TB nvme SSDs) along with this UPS only drains 7.5W right now idling.
And should last like at least 6 hours during outages, although it doesnt seem to have safe shutdown support, with how long it lasts it may not be needed.

Nope, haven’t gone down the Zigbee path. I’ve got a couple Hue bulbs and the rest I care to automate are on wifi outlets.

Just be sure to replace the sealed lead acid or load test it every 3 years or so to avoid surprises. or better replace it with one that that has USB comms. If the NAS is mostly idle a dirty shutdown shouldn’t pose ‘much’ of a problem.

I wish UPS manufactures would update the charge routines to support LiFePO4 but then they wouldn’t sell any replacement batteries (to those that don’t know how to source them themselves for much less).

I only went down this path since its apparently less straining on the wifi, having too many on wifi could slow it down. I do have a wifi smart plug but that one IS noticeably slower with responding takes a few seconds for it to turn on/off or whatever I want it to do, while the zigbee smart plugs I have are pretty much instant.

Its to prevent battery degradation and it not lasting as long as it should right? Or do you mean more serious/dangerous symptoms could happen?

The Eaton UPS with my Synology does indeeed use an USB cable for communication (and supports safe shutdown).

Its the cheaper waveshare ups that doesnt have it but shouldnt be a problem as the docker containers im running there doesnt change my files often.

Fortunately, the latency to respond is quite low, far quicker than a few seconds. But that could change so I’ll keep Zigbee in mind. Thanks.

Just proactive replacement for capacity reasons. SLA doesn’t get any more dangerous over time. They are exceedingly tolerant of abuse including over charging but once they start to swell and belly out, it’s pretty much down on capacity and should be replaced.

Check out GitHub - gawindx/WinNUT-Client: This is a NUT windows client for monitoring your ups hooked up to your favorite linux server. for a client that will use the Synology UPS module to shutdown as configured. I don’t know if there is support for other OS but I bet someone has written something for Linux.

The zigbee compatible stuff IS more expensive though. So if you dont have a lot of smart devices and/or dont need fast responses then I would skip it. I personally only have a motion sensor, 3 light bulbs, 3 smart plugs and an COB LED light strip, so 8 smart devices on zigbee connected to my zigbee gateway (which is wired and connected directly to my router).

Noted.

I believe the waveshare ups doesnt support something like this at all, it doesnt have a usb cable for comms after all. (It has GPIO pins though.)

OpenMediavault has a NUT plugin so for UPS that supports it, it is very easy to use. I went for the cheaper waveshare since my orange pi nas is much less important than my synology and i wanted something cheaper and also more efficient since I suspect that a regular UPS like from eaton will drain as much power as my orange pi does.

Have you checked how much power your nas drains?

Here is where those smart plugs are so damn useful.

Tuya app.

More detailed info on HA.

Can even see that the average power went up by like 2W after the 24th jan, thats when I installed my 2 TB SSD in it.

It’s a 1000VA/600W - about 75w mean but this support more than the NAS. It’s all fueled by solar on the roof

PB, correct. What is shown is just the core network infra. The monolithic storage solution was a 15-frame array, so upwards of 100 PB. There was an entire row of optical switches and the fiber infrastructure to feed the racks. This was a tier 3 center. Took a while to bring her down. Final demo occurred behind us once we were clear.

Everything, the bulk is photos in various forms, keep in mind that Raw files are around 50-60 mb, not to mention unflatten photoshop files that can be several GB per file in some cases, but mostly hover 1-2 GB. i also back up other personal stuff but that’s minor
