Let's talk about computers

not holding out much hope for intel, 14th gen is more expensive than 15th gen atm lol (I could get a 15th gen I7 with a mobo for cheaper than just a 14700k)

Thanks for the cable rec

As far as upgrades ya i know. the HDDs is just what i had on hand, i planning on phasing out to 10TBs (im testing one right now, refurbished WD Ultrastar so far A+) but i’ll mange for now, the PSU will be first, then the platform, last will be the storage since ive got room to spare for now. I’ll probably get a used AM4 platform, reuse the DDR4 i got

been thinking about something like this with the spare parts from friends + family I put together but I don’t really have a use for it lol, its just been gathering dust since I stopped running a game server

Havent checked prices for 14th as im too scared of all the issues i heard with the 13 and 14th gen.

but at least the 12th gen is cheaper than 15th except i dunno about buying new for a 4 year old gen and its like 100 usd difference between them.

We’ll So far HexOS has been pretty seemless and the fact that it’s truenas under the hood is really nice since stuff like Plex dont need anything too fancy, so i’d say go for it

If you are in the US use this.

Not a problem unless u need hardware accel (intel qsv is top tier) and/or low idle drainage.

I have a 12600k atm was wanting to trade up to a 14700k for the extra cores, 14600k isn’t worth because its like 15% better performance for 25% more power consumption, think I’m just waiting for AMD’s next platform at this point

Unfortunately im outside the US. and as far as platform, when the time comes i’ll see what i can find used but ive had a long beef with intel systems, but i’ll wait and see

Yes you are stuck imo.

Intel is only mandatory for me since I want their QSV and their low idle drainage…otherwise I could have used my current 7500F whenever i ditch it for a zen 6 upgrade or zen 7 if the leak is true that it is also still on AM5

Got it, im in the same boat and its painful to see the cheap af prices over there…

You can use AMD if u dont mind higher power useage and lack of hardware accel (or just shitty af), they are better in every other way than those factors anyway.

@CTOXmas @Naturallymorbid look what I found.

Apparently an oem, CWWK seems to be using them for example.

8 sata ports in ITX size is crazy good.

btw what are you doing that makes you want an upgrade?

was walking the dog and saw someone in my neighborhood just thew away 3 old computers 2 of them were E-waste but the last one had a I7 6700 and a 1070…
Still gotta see if they work, the case was in pretty rough shape there - they had leaves and shit inside, tossed the PSU and case but the MB and CPU look pretty good so gave everything a good cleaning hopefully everything works - if it does my NAS is getting a serious upgrade

mostly some games that use a lot of cpu, dabble in 3d software once in a while that loading a lot at once can make my pc scream lol

oh is that your main pc and not a nas? In that I definitely understand. Thinking about getting that cpu for my unraid build myself tbh…

yeah I also have a Frankenstein PC that I used to use as a game/torrenting server but don’t use it much lately (6th or 7th gen I5)
think I’d rather have one PC for everything than keeping two separate systems

Well the 1070 seems to be perfectly fine, but either the cpu or MB are borked, basically after the bios it boot loops - im guessing its the MB, did everything that comes to mind.

i’m trying to see if i can find a used MB but a lot of folk here are seriously out of touch when it comes to pricing used hardware. But at the pricing i’ll probablly wount use the 6700, im better off just buying some old but modern

if it makes it to bios I’d say cpu or ram are more likely the issue

Well i dont think its the ram, these were 2 sticks i had previously, tried both different (together and separately) at various spots slots, with and without XMP.
It might be the CPU but it showed up in the bios correctly (also no overheating).

I think something is shorting the MB because it started booting the second i turned on the PSU (normally you have to short the power pins or connect it to an IO)

if i get my hands on a different MB or different CPU i’ll test it out but it not that much of a big deal, and im still happy the 1070 seems to work
