Let's talk about computers

probably a bunch of layoffs to come to folks who did a great work over the years.

I’m hoping that they just get re-allocated internally to other divisions of Micron but that’s entirely up to Micron. What I do know is that, despite the small market share and their clear intent to maximize profit margins by shifting their direction, they are alienating a lot of the consumer base if they come back to this space. It’s always a calculated move but methinks corporate is always shortsighted nowadays when it comes to the value of customer loyalty. I absolutely stick with brands in the PC component space upgrade-to-upgrade when they perform as advertised and either don’t require RMA or are hassle-free, not out of brand loyalty as a general concept but out of “these guys give me my money’s worth”.

What im wondering is if this will also affect the second hand laptop market. My little sister may need a laptop next year and not sure if it isnt just better to buy one now…

I have a feeling it’ll take a while for it to really hit prebuilts since the makers probably either stockpile or have contracts for fixed pricing per time unit (6 months, annually, etc). Worth considering though that if you don’t think there’ll be any leap in uplift that now may be a good time if prices are decent as-is, though.

I’d say buy, better to overspend a bit then to be stuck with no good choices

My guess less, maybe 2. Keep in mind they have to replenish their stock and it’s gonna cost a fortune and they are not going to eat it - consumers are

In my neck of the woods used hardwware have already spiked but that’s because people are morons are trend riders.

All depends on production rates and demand from consumers. You are right that the costs will be passed on regardless.

Agreed, sometimes you’ve got to bite the bullet and no one has a looking glass into the future to know when the actual peaks and lows are. “A stitch in time” and all that.

Pulled the trigger on a used dell latitude 7400 with 256gb ssd
16gb ddr4 ram
intel core i5 8265u
for 2100 kr.

they originally put it up for 1950 kr with 8gb ram but they had an extra stick that i managed to let me have for an extra 150 kr (aroun 15 usd)

Dunno what to think about laptops with the same specs as my own being sold for a literal 1/7th of the price i paid for mine new around 7 years ago…

Jesus, tech has become such a shit show. I am very grateful to have gotten out when I did. I was Ass-deep in this AI garbage for the last few years, and I couldn’t stand it anymore. Nobody really knows what the fuck they are doing, they are just making it up as they go, which is very scary in my opinion. These half-assed implementations are the primary reason the customer experience is so far in the shitter these days. As for Micron, they can go get fucked. I won’t buy from them anymore. A lot of people are pissed and are talking shit also, but most are weak and will buy from them again.

Seems like there is a golden opportunity for someone to step up and fill the gap. Not an easy feat, given what is involved. I guess we will see. I’d say that for myself, if nothing suddenly fails, I have what I need for the next couple of years.

China will do it if the rest of the world aint.

Lookin back on this I feel that was a bit harsh! LOL I had a really good career in tech. But I was in the trenches building these networks and facilities. Then we hand it over to the software guys, and that is where I part ways! The raw compute power being unleashed is pretty mind-blowing. Awesome shit, actually. I was proud to be on the bleeding edge. I just don’t like where things are headed.

Everything going subscription, you own nothing and you be happy, spyware and AI slop.

@Rikudou_Goku

Since you have a Synology. How has the performance been and how beneficial are the apps for your workflow?

I’m asking because, I’ve never really used them as I’ve mainly worked with SnapRaid with all my custom servers. But with all the increasing prices. Building another home server is gonna be pricy for me and I’m looking into Ready made NAS boxes like the UGreen DXP 4800 Plus or Minisforum N5-Pro.

NOOOOO DONT GO SYNOLOGY!!!

I myself just finished migrating all my data away from my DS423+ to my unraid server.

I dont even use their own software besides the webui and i just used docker containers with the services I needed. Performance on their stuff is crappy af, a few gens behind their competitors and if you built your own its lightspeeds apart.

Snapraid+mergerfs is cool and does emulate the SHR they have but I would just run Unraid with their array which does not have data stripping is much better and convenient for you. Speed is worse than raid but is easily solved by using ssd/nvme drives as cache. You can set so specific “shares” (folders) first have new data go to the cache drive then after a while (you can pick the time if you want) the “mover” will automatically move the files to the hdds afterward. You can also mix and match drives with different capacities like SHR does.

I would not go with that N5 Pro as it has an AMD cpu and that ugreen one has a pretty weak intel CPU although still like 3x more powerful than synology uses (Intel J4125). I would check how much it costs for you to build your own using the Jonsbo N3 case and perhaps this MB.

I have the oem version (piesia) of it.

But c-states on the piesia version is worse than the CWWK i assume so get the one from CWWK.

I have the Corsair SF750 psu (most efficient PSU that can run all 8 hdd slots and also a dgpu if needed). With the Intel 12600K cpu. I have 64gb with this setup.
Cost was a bit higher than the ugreen but performance and expandability are leagues ahead.

I lowered the TDP on the 12600K to 55W iirc. The TDP limit on the CPU on the Piesia MB is 65W.
Performance isnt really that much worse with lowered tdp on these intel cpus though afaik.

Yikes! Thanks for the heads up. I guess time for me to surf the used market for server stuff instead and make another rack server instead, using TrueNAS/HEX OS and dealing with a JBOD and use some IronWolf drives instead of SSD’s. Would be cheaper than running an 8 bay drive with just SSD’s and I can get more storage in the process. And yes using an NVME as the cache drive would be an efficient way to save money as well. I’ve got an 8 TB nvme that fulfill that role.

I guess time for a new homelab project to begin.

I would look at the Exos lineup instead they are more durable.

Over on Toshiba it would be the MG lineup and on WD it would be gold/ultrastar.

Seems like I got lucky since there are Exos X20 20TB drives that a friend of mine is selling for $485.

Now to look for good deals on server parts from liquidators.

Damn that is expensive.

Check here.

As much as I’d like to buy from Amazon. They would cost more than $150 in shipping and taxes to get to me. The $485 is already here and VAT is already included and brand new.

Dont have a local amazon option? (not .com)

Ebay can also work.

more than $600 for the same drive on local amazon since they still get some stuff from US. Ebay ships here but that would be the same issue of shipping + taxes. So Ebay I would get a Recertified or Refurbished drive that would cost more than a brand new one locally available.
