Let's talk about computers

Yeah ok that is bad then worse than sweden it seems since I can at least order from other eu stores.

Got my own 3d printed vertical stand for my nuc! But my fans havent even been shipped yet…i ordered 2 of the server fans from arctic.

Mission failed…cant get the fan in…

Possible to modify fan or enclosure?

not afterwards will need to modify the enclosure and print it again. im trying to attach it to the bottom so i can maybe just check if this does anything to the temps.

Yeahhh so im idle it seems the temps only lower by like 1-2c…

Drew a new design that should fit a single 92mm fan.

Perhaps going to 120mm or even 140mm would be better though.

2 x 40x25mm fans with my stand vs single 100mm fan just pointed at the nuc without any stands/enclosures
See that big dip is when i swapped to the 100mm fan…wonder if an enclosure with a 92mm will even be better…

this is idling.

yeahhhhhhh funnnn.

extra sad because everything is getting so bloated now 8GB ram isn’t enough

windows laptops use like 6GB idle (3-4GB after heavy debloating), android is using around 3-4GB idle now

Yeah you gotta switch to Linux. You get back a few GBs.

And with Linux you can also utilize ZRAM which is compressed ram and you can adjust how much of the regular ram will be used for ZRAM and the priority.

I have been putting this off because Linux is not really home user friendly, but it can be done. Given my loathing for fucking Microflop and that shitbag Bill Gates as well as Windows in general, it might just be time to make a decision and give it a go. I dunno, we will see.

Depending on how bad the prices get, this could be the thing that finally gets people to back off this sewer of an Internet and, oh, I don’t know, read a book. Or even more shocking, go outside! Since I have moved to Texas I have not been on this idiot box much at all. And I only see that trend intensifying.

Yes I only switched myself cuz i hated the direction windows is going. Highly recommend either Linux Mint or Kubuntu for first timers, it really isnt as hard as it seemed to have been years ago.

Its also why im self hosting everything now pretty much, i do believe it will get worse and worst case scenario I just stick with what I have locally…

second mint I run it on my laptops and it feels like Win7/10 out of the box.

only issue I’ve had in the last 2 years was a one command line fix because my nvidia driver didn’t want to update

Another one would be Zorin OS. All three distros are debian/ubuntu based underneath so lots of info out there if you need help and they all are made to be simple for ex windows users.

I prefer Kubuntu the most as it uses the KDE desktop environment which has the most customization possible out of the box.

Same, either gonna have to switch to a barebones version of FF or just find a new browser, I guess. Is Brave still viable?

Right now im going to try Waterfox - basiclly stripped down firefox. But i dont know… maybe Brave or Opera .

But i’d say in a few days to a week, they will probably be a bunch of videos on youtube for folks looking for alternatives.

The thing is i dont mind an AI button (there is already one in FF) or add more AI features so long as you have to opt in to them, but to make it an “AI browser”, Fuck no.

The good thing about Waterfox, it is still Firefox just stripped down. just set mine up same process - login with the same credentials, same plugins and what-not. How long that will last that remains to be see - right now its a first step until we find a new browser

I’ll have to look into Waterfox this weekend when I have time. Only plugins I really use are NoScript and Adblocker Ultimate.

I am using Brave. Firefox and other forks of it arent always compatible with all sites I have seen so I cant really use them.

Waterfox is what i would use if i wanted a firefox fork though.
librewolf is another option.
