You could always underclock it if you think it actually runs particularly spicy. How common is RAM failure from heat specifically? I don’t believe that I’ve heard much about it opposed to initially bad/faulty modules, although I’m also not very immersed in OC/Top Tier builds and tweaking…
Edit: I will admit that I tend to favor generational improvements in hardware while sticking to more efficient designs opposed to Bleeding Edge stuff or potentially stressing my components. I purposely overbuild for my needs so I only end up hitting peaks or stressing things in very small, uncommon increments. Would I like an x3D CPU? Sure. Will I still get better-than-I-need performance out of an x CPU that I can also comfortably and reliably just run on air? Also yes.
Yeah i never seen anyone mentioned ram overheat either…perhaps its more of a worry in laptops with sodimm thats packed like sardines but likely nothing to worry about in desktops…
I copied this in my nuc.
No clue how to check ram temp in proxmox though but did help the nvme a bit but biggest difference is to just point at least one fan at it and it helped a lot more.
They dont really benefit EVERYTHING though, its mostly cpu focused games that benefit a lot from X3D like WoW. And in productivity it does not help at all iirc.
That was also part of why I stuck to a 9700x, it just makes more sense for my needs than spending on a beefier CPU. While I do like overbuilding, I don’t like wasting money on components I don’t need as well. Also part of why I went 5070ti over a 5080 for the current setup.
I got a laptop small cooling pad with a fan built in for $14 and they work great for other things too. A router or gaming console fits on it to get temps down. Just runs off any phone charger.
This is true to some extent but an X3D does other things as well that benefits gaming.
There are a bunch of scenarios in most games where a X3D CPU doesn’t improve the average FPS (because it is GPU bound at 4k), but removes a lot of micro stuttering and low 0.1% FPS spikes. The 3D cache helps significantly with core idling, because it’s victim cache. This means the CPU will look for relevant info there before dipping into memory, which can significantly accelerate certain workloads. So, it depends on the specific workload.
I use mainly 27" 1440p monitors. I have a 4K 32" monitor but I use it mainly for color correcting when editing and media consumption. Anything else it’s on the 27" screens. At 4K X3D still does not offer a significant advantage over any other powerful cpu as 4k is extremely GPU bound.
My contact at ASUS, that I’ve spoken to just an hour ago has already told me that the cards I ordered will be the last shipment I will get for the 5070ti SKUs . They’ve already stopped production.
There was just a Hardware Unboxed video confirming this too. I think it’s going to be a very rough ride for PC gaming for the next year or two at minimum.
and here i was worried i bought too much ram for my servers, in fact i got 64gb with the unraid and 96gb with the proxmox. the literal max that the cpu supports on specs. Seems it was a good move lol.
“Current fluctuations in supply for both products are primarily due to memory supply constraints, which have temporarily affected production output and restocking cycles. As a result, availability may appear limited in certain markets, but this should not be interpreted as a production halt or product retirement.”
Funny, because I’ve seen other reports today that anything over 8gb is effectively a dead SKU now, at least for Team Green. Looked up prices/supplies on a lot of the supposedly “limited” models on Newegg and the supply and prices are already fucked. Radeon cards are still in decent supply and price, at least for 9070 XTs. Time will tell, but I hope you boys all priced in already…
Edit: Begs the question, can you have a Paper Launch after products have been on the shelf for a year?
