Let's talk about computers

Intel 10nm has been broken since…

forever? (as was 14nm btw, and their DDR4 support in the beginning).

4c/8t is all anyone could ever need from their i7, right?
According to a few reports, Intels internal structure is a hostile mess. That is not where inovation happens.

I imagine when we get the new sockets from amd with am5 the new gen if CPUs will be getting super cheap 4 core CPUs in the Athlon line and ryzen 3s start becoming 6 core CPUs. They are already 4 core 8 threads that can compete with 7th Gen i7s for a budget part.

Do you guys plan to upgrade once the 4000 series get released? Me? I don’t think so, I would do upgrade only when DDR5 or AM5 becomes a thing.

a lot depends on what they have currently. not a lot of older boards support the 4000 series, so if they’re 1000 and 2000 series, they may wait as they’d have to buy a whole new platform with no upgrade path like they did when they bought originally.

AFAIK AM4 is done with 3rd Gen Ryzen.
Looking at the performance gain from Zen 1 to Zen+ and then to Zen 2, I think my 1700x will go back in its box in 2021.

you mean 4th gen…don’t forget the 2nd gen was Zen+.

Initially had it writen as “Ryzen 1xxx” and so on. Has been a long day here…

Well my current rig is doing fine, I mean when I first built my PC, I only have an old ass Intel i5 4460 it is old as hell and I have used it for 6 years until I finally upgraded my PC to a Ryzen build which is the current one I have, and man it is a huge jump since for the first time, I got a NVMe SSD for my OS and it is fast as hell compared to those years of me only using HDD.

OK… need some help and figured you folks are the ones to talk to. I’m an older gent who knows music, but VERY little about computers and electronics. Currently have a 2019 HP 14" chromebook which works ok for youtube (concerts and such) and recently added Primephonic classical hi res streaming. My new e 30 (love it) reveals that chrome is downsampling the hi res to 48. Tried the google app, but same problem and worse format. Company suggested trying Firefox, but I don’t know much about that. Qobuz didn’t work out either. Any simple, inexpensive solutions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Have you installed the drivers for your e30? Also might need to go into sound control panel and right click your source (in this case the e30) properties and then change your default format to 24/192 and see if that helps.

Edit: sorry I just realized you are running a chromebook, not familiar with the OS so my suggestions might not be doable…

@Towa Yeah, thanks…I’m finding that chromebooks have severe limitations for audio streaming services. :pensive:

Android devices are capped at 48Khz sampling rate unless you route the OS. You can either go down that road or look into a cheap Windows based laptop.

@WaveTheory Yeah, thinking a windows device would offer many more options. Though to be clear what do you mean by “route the operating system?” As I said, I know little about this, lol.

I should have said “root.” Here’s a summary:

Oh, ok. I mostly use the chrome browser rather than the offered google android app (which also downsampled Primephonic.)
Will ck the root and consider a windows based unit, I guess. Thanks.

I wonder why Google impaired Android / Chrome OS on the audio spec.

It’s really frustrating. Any ideas? or do I have to look into a windows computer instead of my chromebook? If so, do you have any suggestions? As I stated earlier, I need to keep it inexpensive and VERY easy to use, lol.

you’re probably going to have to look at a Windows PC or Mac of some sort. I use an older 2014 Mac Mini as a music server. don’t have to worry about USB drivers on Mac OS.

Thanks, I will look into that.

Android is a mess anyway.

There are like a bazillion API levels and half the documentation is worthless.

Here is some more of Androids fuckery:
