Let's talk about movies lol

Spiderman: Into the Spider-Verse is pretty darn solid. You don’t have to be a full-fledged Avengers nerd to enjoy it. It’s self-contained and for all practical purposes not really part of the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I cant get over the ending of that movie. they’re just looking at each other and they start dancing… so cool. dont think ive ever seen an ending like that to a movie.

Well ‘dogs dont wear pants’ ends in a similar fashion… but proceed with caution there lol

Ah ok then all my reccs stand except for Korean old dog that one I would want to screen first cause tha movie is a lil bit fucked up.

Today’s Recc’s

Sleeping Dogs - Sam Neill’s first starring role. New Zealand Film about a fictional rise in fascism in NZ and bitter almost hermit like young man’s journey being pulled into its web and his eventual turn into a freedom fighter.

Case of the Scorpion’s Tale - Giallo - An investigator tracks down a young woman who is being stalked and hunted for her fortune.

EUROPA - A young American man of German Descent journeys to post war Germany to help the country in its reconstruction efforts. He gets pulled into a Kafka esque labyrinth of abusive railway conductors, romance, conspiracy, violence and Nazi terrorists. Shot like Sin City but in 1991.

Trouble Every Day - A young woman is experimented on by her geneticist lover and rapidly gains not only a craving for human blood but violent cannibalistic sex

Primer - A movie about time travel written and directed by an actual mathematician. Most realistic depiction of time travel and how confusing it can be.

Ring (Ringu) Original Japanese film of the ring story. Incredibly subdued and minimalistic. Conveys a level of creepiness no american adaptation has ever matched.

The Brutal Hopelessness of Love - This is further on the edge for some folks. Incredibly dark examination of an actress undergoing a severe mental breakdown as her life collapses during a film shoot that reflects her life and her husband’s infidelities. Is basically softcore so NSFW.

Rough Cut: Korean film. An actor who has tarnished his reputation for having a violent temper and tendency to fight hires an actual gangster to play his nemesis in the film. He agrees but with one Caveat - All the fights must be absolutely real.

The Man who Stole the Sun - A Japanese schoolteacher builds a nuclear bomb and threatens to blow up tokyo unless they meet his increasingly bizarre brands.

Cure - A detective investigates a bizarre case of serial murders where the manner of death and mo are always the same, but the killer is different.

Angel Dust - A young criminal profiler finds herself investigating a series of poisonings on the tokyo subway which leads her into a dark world of suspicious psychiatry for breaking addictions and cult deprogramming. When her own sense of sanity starts to dissolve she must find the killer before she is framed for the crimes.

Charisma - A burnt out Hostage Negotiator wanders into the woods and finds a three way battle between a young hermit, soldiers and nature conservationists over an extremely rare tree that threatens to poison an entire forest. One of the most striking final shots ever.

Next of Kin - Australia - A young woman inherits her mothers estate and old folks home business only to find her tenants dying incredibly violent deaths. Is the home haunted or her sanity failing her. Another great final image.

Road Games - Australia - Stacey Keach is an expat working as a truck driver in the outback. He discovers one of the other drivers on the road during his long haul is a serial killer.

Dead End Drive In - In a collapsing near Future australia a young man takes his girlfriend to the drive in. When he lies and takes advantage of a free ticket for people who dont have a job, He discovers himself locked in and unable to escape. The drive in has turned into an internment camp for people society doesnt want. Amazing final sequence.

The Dressmaker – A shamed woman accused of murder as a child returns to her small 50s outback village a successful french dressmaker. She uses her high fashion to get revenge on the people who persecuted her.

nah lol. A brighter summer’s day is 4 hours long in its own right. These are just movies from my personal collection that I recommend if anybody wants stuff that’s a bit different.

Edit; I work in film and TV and film was my first hobby before audiophilia. So I own and watch a loooot of movies. I love being able to share weird outsider or lesser known stuff I think folks will love.

I was going to recommend Primer. One of the smartest movies I’ve ever seen. For older films, I’d recommend Being There or Chinatown for anyone who may not have seen them. Two of my all time favorites. For a good soundtrack, Harold and Maude

Today’s Reccs

The Duellists - Ridley Scott’s first movie. One the best depictions of the napoleonic wars, often surpassing films like Barry Lyndon and made for a fraction of the price.

Hard to Be a God - The third major adaptation of a Strugatsky Brother’s novel after STALKER and UGLY SWANS. On a distant planet where people have not progressed passed the middle ages. An observer from earth is pulled into the chaos of the planets politics as his personal relationships undermine his impartiality. Long, Black and White and all the characters are often aware of the camera as if there is a documentary crew following the lead around.

IMAGES - Robert Altman. A horror film about a children’s book author being tormented by her own double.

Stormy Monday - 80s neo noir gangster film set in Britain. Notable for a Sean Bean performance where he doesn’t die, excellent Tommy Lee Jones as the villain and STING in a role he doesn’t have to try for a different accent and as such proves he can act.

Smash Palace - The Director of Sleeping Dog’s follow up movie. About a racecar driver/junkyard owner’s divorce and desperate attempts to keep his daughter, which dissolve into violence and madness

The Queen of Spades - Classic Hollyood. In 1800s Russia, a soldier with little prospects due to commoner origins schemes his way into the family of a decrepit old rich woman’s household trying to discover how she can never lose at Cards. The secret he’s after might have a cost he is not prepared to pay.

Knife + Heart - In 1970s Paris, the producer of bottom of the barrel gay porn must stop a crazed murder who is killing her stars. Ode to Giallo and DePalma. Soundtrack by M83

The Wind and the Lion - From the director of Conan and Red Dawn, John Milius, comes a grand adventure. When a brigand kidnaps an American woman and her children in the middle east, they soon discover that the kidnapper is an educated, dethroned prince fighting for his people. An unlikely friendship arises between the prince and his captors and Teddy Roosevelt as well. Based on a True Story.

Annihilation - Just watch it.

The Pumpkin Eater - A woman slowly falls apart from her husbands infidelities and manipulations. Some of the best black and white cinematography ever.

Pulse (Japan) - From the Director of Cure. Ghosts invade out world, slowly decaying people. An apocalypse told in two stories

Dark Water (Japan) - A single mother moves into a new apartment and discovers a persistent leak. As she tries to figure out what happens she discovers a darker story and a spirit behind it all.

Spider - A young woman finds herself hunted by shadowy beings and horny spider god things that may or not be real. Some gorgeous cinematography

Please keep these coming. I love finding new films and directors, and all the small theaters near me have been closed or bought out by the larger chains. When I lived in Seattle, I had 5 independent theaters in walking distance and I had the chance to see so many more international films than I have access to today.

Love the movie thread we have going on here! I just watched a very nice anime movie, it’s called ‘A silent voice’. I didn’t know they were this good at making you feel emotions! A must watch imo.

If you want emotion from anime watch grave of the fireflies.
It is an utterly brilliant piece of animation, and I don’t think I could bring myself to ever watch it again.

I’ll watch it. Not today though. I’ve got enough feels for the day lol

Adding to anime feels I’ll mention ‘your name’… I’ve been meaning to watch a silent voice

Go for it! I’ll add ‘your name’ to my list!

I made a huge mistake by not knowing wtf I was doing and took my young kids to see Grave of the Fireflies at a theatre during a Studio Ghibli Fest/Fathom events run.

Great movie, but I regret doing that, it’s no wonder the entire theatre was staring at us while we were finding seats.

Its rated pg in canada but yeah it’s pretty dark with some more mature themes… it’s a little misleading
