Pretty rusty on the DW 5000 double bass pedals though especially at my age.
It’s a real workout these days…
Need to play more often…
I hear you. I just watched a Rush documentary where Niel says in no uncertain terms how physical drumming is. Like he said, “You are hitting things, most times as hard as you can”. That makes complete sense to me! I really respect what you guys do, man. @JAnonymous5150 that means you too, brother!
As a sidenote, I will be spinning up Snakes and Arrows this evening…
I’m not a musician, just had drums since a teenager… Lots of fun though… I prefer to play with light jazz sticks 4A’s… I remember one time we were jamming and one of the ends of a stick broke off and flew back and stuck in my cheek. Everyone was killing themselves laughing at me sitting there with an 1 1/2" chunk of stick hanging out of my face… I wore safety glasses from then on ,never play without them…
I discovered her a couple of years ago. She was the featured artist on a “Live from Daryl’s House” show. Interesting voice. I should actually listen to the album!
Drumming at home or in smaller settings can be a workout in itself, but drumming a live show where, as NP said, you’re hitting many things as hard as you can for a sustained set is on a different level. Drumming, if you’re doing it daily or at least regularly, is a great way to keep up a basic level of fitness.
To @Dobbs : Woah! You’re only the second person I know to have been really wounded by stick shrapnel (and I have been around A LOT of drummers)! I have had slivers like inch or inch and a half long splinters stick in a finger or hand after a break, but I have never had a section of my stick impale my neck. That’s crazy! I have a buddy who had the end of his stick snap and lodge in the white part of his eyeball so that they had to stop the show and run him to the ER to get it removed. Thankfully and miraculously, it caused no lasting damage, but took a couple months and a minor surgery to fix.
I actually have a different drummer friend who had a chuck split off a crash cymbal during a concert and come back and slice him near the elbow. The band tried to keep playing, but dude couldn’t get it to stop bleeding and it bled through a shirt he wrapped around it and everything so eventually they called it and took him to the hospital. Turns out the cymbal shrapnel had partially severed an artery (your radial artery is pretty shallow there).
Sorry to everyone for the off topic stories, but I couldn’t help myself.
Girl can play!
Well I’ve been struck in the face with wires from brushes played too hard as well as those bamboo brush type things , I can’t remember their name… I went though 4A jazz sticks like crazy. I bought a pair of Easton Ahead Pro Line Rock aluminum sticks 30 years ago and I still have them in great condition…
Now for something topical…
Listening in the wee hours again and I have the HE560 v3s plugged into the Schiit Lyr (w/70s Amperex glass) and the Modi Multibit 2 pulling DAC duty, decoding all the bits sent by my laptop.
At the top of the queue this morning is Ohm’s best album (IMO), Circus of Sound. Strikes a nice balance between proggy goodness, bluesy riffage, and jazzy grooves. The musicianship is great and, though somewhat laid back, the songs always get my head bobbin’ and my air bass drum pedal workin’.
Edit: BTW, I have been searching for more music in this vein so if anyone has any rec’s of similar material a PM or post would be much appreciated!
As promised, I was finally able to get in here and get it on!
I feel like my favorite era of theirs was in the 80’s and 90’s. Not that I don’t love the entire catalog. I do. As such I sometimes neglect to give the newer stuff more play. This album kicks ass, actually! They pull off some things on this album that I had completely forgotten about. The instrumental pieces are fantastic. Lovin it.
AMHD > Douk U2 Pro > Schiit Bifrost 2 > Singxer SA-1 Pre > SMSL SP200 > Focal Radiance
My favorite album from Sir Elton. “Social Disease” is epic! “My Bulldog is barkin in the backyard, enough to raise a Deadman from his grave…”
I get juiced on Mateus and just hang loose… Bernie done good right there😎
Man, that is catchy! Had my head bobbin’ fo sho!
