Looking for a serious BLON BL-03 upgrade

If you get a pair of FH7’s you’ll use them a whole lot more than a pair of 6xx’s…don’t use my 660’s much these days even when tube driven.

I liked them, but I didn’t find myself picking them up that often tbh, so I let them go

I don’t generally use IEMs when I’m at home. Although i guess that’s mostly due to cable length which is a simple enough fix. Admittedly I do prefer the feel of a full headphone though. Regardless the FH7 do look really nice.

would you say that is because they overlapped with some of your existing iems…the it03s for example?

Somewhat, but also the comfort wasn’t right for me, they were kinda too heavy for me and didn’t fit deep enough in my ear to feel secure. I have higher end iems, but I do still use the 03s a fair bit for some reason lol

Definitely worth the pick up in the $200 range. Mind you they are bass cannons, but really great quality, hard hitting and impactful bass. It doesn’t play nicely with some genres (jazz, classical, orchestral), but if you listen to EDM, hip-hop/rap, various top 40, and anything bass-centric, get these!

The H40s’ have very nice soft V-shape where mids don’t get lost and a very relaxed upper region. Imaging, detail, and separation is just ok, but the soundstage is wide, like really W I D E comparable to my FH7’s. If I have any complaints is that it may be too wide, where the lead guitarist would sound far left or right away from the entire band, but that’s really being nit-picky. It’s worthy of it’s $200 price tag!

How do you compare the H40 to the BL-03? Seems to me that tuning is similar (which is what I want) I just want something that is more technical. Also have you had the FDX1 or the OH10 to compare them to? Those are ones I’m strongly considering these against. If I’m being realistic the FH7 is probably a stretch for my budget so it would be nice to keep it around $200.

I’m going to be honest, Blon’s don’t really compete with the H40’s. H40’s are in direct competition with the Empire Ears Bravado’s, so if you’re looking for an upgrade from the Blon’s definitely check out the H40’s, Moondrop KXXS, Oriolus Finschi (Hifi Edition), Ikko OH10’s, and possibly the Shozy 1.4’s.

Yeah I don’t expect the BL-03 to compete. (They are good, but I’m realistic.) I was more asking if you could elaborate in what ways the H40 outperforms the 03. If you say “pretty much everything” I’ll believe you.

Not sure it it’s been back for a while but I just got an email for the JVC HA-FDX1 on drop for $250. It has very good reviews so I wonder how it stacks up to other iems in that price range.

I haven’t tried some of the others (FH7 en route), but the JVCs are one of my favorite all around choices even including headphones.

S7 phone JDS Atom/Geshelli ENOG2 DAC for setup

Maybe late to the party, but recently got the Jade Audio (FiiO sub brand IEMs) and I like them a lot, even getting some for presents for others.

As for music I listen to Rock, Metal , edm, electronic, classic etc. I havent noticed any treble spiking issues where it hurts/fatigues. For bass it’s dynamic and you can feel it. It isnt some skullcandy shake-bass either. It’s very defined and delivered well (not the best at terms). Sound stage is great IMO and they are very comfortable, though like all IEM’s I purchased a separate 16 core cable to use out of preference

Yes, it’s an improvement. The bass, soundstage and timbre are much better on the H40’s. Bass is fast with a lot of body and weight; soundstage is wide; and they feature more natural sounding vocals. Imaging, instrument separation, and details are just slightly better on the H40. One of my very few nit-picky complaints with the H40 is the upper region is too relaxed and it’s where you pull most of your detail from.

So I’ve been doing some thinking. (Dangerous I know.) What if instead of trying to upgrade on the sound signature of the BL-03, I went for a new sound signature instead to complement them? I could keep the BL-03 as my “fun” IEM’s when I want the wub-wubs, then I could get something with a totally different flavor so I could change up my listening. Thoughts? Suggestions? My curiosity has been directed toward the ER4XR recently which is why I started thinking along these lines.

That would be different from the bl03 lol. You could do that. You could also look into an iem with different modes or filters that you could use to tune the iem if you wanted to mess with that

You can probably find these under $200 on the used market. There’s waaaaaaaaaaaay too many combinations to mess with, but if you’re patient it could be a winner.

I had the FLC8s and it was pretty sweet, although I sold it off when I got the it03

Should the iT03 be on my radar then if I want a sound signature to complement my BLONs? I have a desktop setup with good power to drive but I still need to upgrade my portable setup. I would be looking to use my IEMs in both scenarios but I’d be willing to upgrade my portable source soon.

It would depend on preference. The it03 is intimate, v shaped, and very 3d sounding (also fit is great for my ears). If that’s what you want in your life then yes lol, but if you are looking for a more even signature I don’t know if that’s what you would want

Help me understand “intimate” but also “3D”. Intimate means not super wide soundstage, more in-your-head sound correct? Are you referring more to precise imaging when you say 3D?

It’s an in your head sound, but it’s also pretty interesting how it creates a stage and how it places things, there is depth to it and things can pop out
