šŸ”· MassDrop THX AAA 789 - Linear Headphone Amplifier

I have 2 Headphones plugged in at the same time, can somebody pls tell if its okay to do so? Will i run into troubles longterm?

They are smart. Build up demand to a point where they can increase the price on every drop.

Agreed. I love mine. Great closed back headphone.

Have either of you guys compared them to the Ether C Flow or Ether CX by chance? How is the bass on the Elegia and how do they do on eq? Thanks fellas!

I have the Ether C Flow, and tried the ElegĆa for a week. The Elegia were very thin I didnā€™t like them, but some people say the low end is prominent and good in the Elegia. I tried different positioning, with and without glasses and it never improved, probably my head shape didnā€™t allow for a good seal. So, to me the Ether C Flow are way better than the Elegia, in every regard, the only issue is that you need more power to drive them.

Thanks for that direct comparison. The Elegia has been on sale, but I was worried about comfort and bass. I have see a lot of people call them thin, or metalicky if that is a word and I know that is probably not the overall presentation, exaggerated, but still something I personally might want to avoid.

I have been wanting to buy the ECF for a long time. I am looking for an ultra comfortable closed back for work, reasonable treble, good bass, decent sound stage and good imaging. Now that the CX exists it may make me pull the trigger. I guess the question then is how much different are they than the ECF.

Elegia is bass lite! But it is clean and accurate bassā€¦EQ will only get you so far hereā€¦

I love the sound signature of the Focal Clear, and the Elegia is the closed back equivalent of the Clear. The Elegia does a very good job of not feeling/sounding like a closed back headphone. It feels more open than most all other closed backs Iā€™ve listened to (probably due to the new venting design and internal baffles built into the earcup). The Elegia has a dip in its low frequency that helps separate the lows and mids. There is no bass bleed into the mids. The Elegia is not a bass heavy headphone, but thatā€™s actually a breath of fresh air to me for a closed back which usually tend to be bass heavy. Since the Elegia is so clean, it takes to EQ well if you choose to EQ it. I prefer to listen with no EQ.

Iā€™m a BIG fan of Focals design and their headphone comfort. Focalā€™s build quality is also phenomenal. The only drawback are their cables are not to my liking.

The Ether C Flow is a fantastic closed back headphone as well, but feels to me like a more traditional closed back compared to the Elegia which feels more like an open back. I actually prefer the Massdrop version to the original. The Drop version can be tuned to your liking.

Awesome, thanks for these detailed responses guys, itā€™s really appreciated. Guess we have deviated from the 789 a bit, but oh well lol.

I listen to a lot of EDM and hiip hop, does the CX seem like a more fitting purchase than the Elegia?

Welcome Buster,

Different strokes for different folks. Do you have to go closed back? Iā€™d go open back always before closed back. I own the Elegia for at the office and if I have to listen at home silently.

Aboslutely. One persons medicine is another persons poison.

Yes, I have to go closed back. I love open back headphones, but I need something for the long office days and not annoying the hell out of my girlfriend at home. I donā€™t have a dedicated home office at my current place, my desk is kind of in a nook off the living room, so I drive her nuts when Iā€™m jamming out on my Sendy Aivas lol. I have no shortage of open backs I want to buyā€¦ But, I know I should just bite the bullet and get my endgame closed back at this point. I should also add, I am one of those weirdos who really enjoys a good closed back. Iā€™ve considered the neumanns as well, but I foresee comfort issues because I couldnā€™t even wear 1990ā€™s for more than a couple of hours. A lot of people have suggested the Elegia and it does look like a very good headphone, but because I listen to a lot of EDM and hip hop I wonder if the CX would be the better choice. I have also been fawning over the Ether C Flows for years now and that may be a part of it.

Sorry for the diary entries

I am in exactly the same situation and know how you feel. I also own the Sendy Aivaā€™s, and owned the Neumanns for a few weeks.

This is a difficult choice between the Elegia and the Ether. For the type of music you listen to, I think the Ether might suit you better (bass heavy) but only youā€™d be able to tell. The open feel to the Elegia in a closed back is fantastic and honestly, the Elegia has more than enough bass, but itā€™s not over extended.

Hereā€™s a comparison for youā€¦ Do you feel the Aivaā€™s have more than enough bass for you? Because if they do, the Elegia in comparison is possibly better than the Aiva. The Aiva is hard on my ears in the high frequencies. I much more prefer the Elegia (extremely detailed and more neutral). I actually want to get rid of the Aiva, but for $600 itā€™s a great deal for the quality of the product.

I loved the sound signature of the Neumanns. They were uncomfortable for me at first but I started getting used to the circular earpads. The problem I had was that the left ear cup swivel became extremely loose to the point I was afraid of it breaking at any point. The opposing side never became loose. Because of the build quality and the uncomfortable fit, I returned them. Great sounding cans though.

789 lol . It is a sing of the gods. Better obey them.

I mean someone could always just use some metal mounting strips, the ones with holes and is either thin steel or aluminumā€¦

ā€œMasscucksā€ LOL

I know itā€™s kinda stupid they have a long line of people waiting to fork over the money and they refuse to manufacture like 15 at a time. They would make so much more money just selling a shit ton at a time.

Iā€™m just going to get the 788 because of the built-in dac and the PEQā€™s. Why would I spend $400 plus the price of a balanced dac when I can get the whole package for $500 plus some extra features. I also donā€™t want to wait for the drop to stock and then wait for it to ship 2 years later. If I catch the monolith on sale, I can get the 788 for $450. A steal for balanced THX tech.

I own both the 788 & 789 along with a SMSL SU-8 Dac for the 789 and I kinda kick myself for not just getting a 788 for home and work. IMO the 788 is an incredible value and sounds just as good as the 789. Donā€™t hesitate to pick one up!

This. I would bet 99% of people couldnā€™t identify the difference between the 789 and 788 in a blind test. People donā€™t realize that if you want a balanced setup for the 789, a balanced DAC is going to cost at least $200. This doesnā€™t even mention all the features you get with the 788.

If you are using the 789 for use single-ended use, you are wasting money. Just buy a JDS Atom or El amp for hundreds of dollars cheaper.

At $400, I am clueless why people keep thinking they need the 789.

Agreed. This is all you need. Not to mention the DAC is insane!!!
