šŸ”· Modhouse ARGON MkIII

I ordered my pair of Argons in July, just looking for a cable with 3.5mm to 4.4 mm balanced to run it balanced of a topping A50S. I want to buy the cable from the EU so i dont pay $40 in shipping. But so far i havent found a company/person that makes them outside the US.

Hm, think Audioverse in Germany does custom work if I remember correctly
Otherwise itā€™s not to hard to do it oneself only tricky bit is finding a decent 4pole 3.5mm plug

Thanks, I had a look on their website but for those prices i might as well order the cable from the US XD. Or look into DIY, but i rather not do that.

Wellā€¦ the MKIII have arrived

First impressions

WhatĀ“s great:

  • Comfort.
  • Bass.
  • Soundstage and imaging.
  • General tuning (bass elevated, warm and dark, but with sparkle). Great for electronic music. I need more time with vocals, but so far they seem to sound great to me.

I need more time to test:

  • Bass texture. As Iā€™ve said, bass is great, but thereā€™s something that makes all bass sound similar. I donā€™t know if itā€™s just the sound signature, due to tuning, or itā€™s some technical thing.
  • Treble in busy passages. I have had the feeling that it can get messy, but I need to try more. In any case, I donā€™t listen very complex and busy musicā€¦
  • To try them with rock or other genres.

Great purchase. I have had doubts because it was an impulsive buy, but these will clearly stay with me for a long time. No way I am going to sell them in the short term.

good to hear that you like them. I ordered mine in july so i hope i get em before xmas. what amp do you use?

I am using the Hidizs S9 PRO. It is a phone dongle, but it has a lot of power. I use it around 30% volume on other headphones, with the Argon I have to put it around 70%, but still have room.

I have the Schiit Asgard 3 at home, but I cannot use it these days.

After some more use, I can confirm my firsts impressions: These are amazing headphones. It makes all the music I listen very engaging, I just want to listen more of it and I find myself singing and moving my body to the music.

They are not the most detailed headphones and they can struggle on busy passages with a lot of guitars, drums and voices. However, they have other great technical qualities, like the soundstage. Music sound BIG with these. Itā€™s not like instruments are very far away. They are headphones after all, not speakers. But compared with other headphones these provide the sense that music is really embracing you, it is not just being thrown from the headphones to you ears. Itā€™s something special, and something enjoyable. Somewhat similar to the Audeze LCD2-C.

Edit: the busy parts might also be some bad recordings, paired with Spotify and my equipmentā€¦ However, I have the feeling that the Clairvoyance have much more resolutionā€¦ Then I prefer to listen music with the Argons, hehe

So, looks like my plan to forget that I purchased these headphones worked. The time flew by fast and the next thing I know Iā€™m getting an E-mail notification saying my Argons shipped! One problem though, I FORGOT I bought these and I never bought my Hart cable for them lol. So I had to wait for my cable to arrive while my Argons just sat there, teasing meā€¦

What I have-
Argons: balanced, protein pads, deer skin comfort strap.
My chain:
for music, Pixel 5a>Schiit Modius>Schiit Asgard 3
for gaming, PS5>cheap UAC1 dac>Schiit Modi 3>JDS labs Atom (planning on getting a Schiit Hel 2 to replace this)

I listen to a lot of Soundtracks from anime, games, and movies. I also Listen to a lot of female Japanese singers in different genreā€™s and some dark ambient music.

Iā€™m a complete novice in this hobby but Iā€™ll try my best to do a review/first impression, so take this nonsense Iā€™m about to write with a huge grain of salt!
o(怃ļ¼¾ā–½ļ¼¾ć€ƒ)o Iā€™m so happy I bought these!! I knew I would enjoy these headphones since I did a lot of homework before buying them but I was still scared that I wouldnā€™t like them and would have to sell them.

They are super comfy cans but a little heavy. Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll get use to the weight but after the first 2 hours it became noticeable and after 4 hours of use, I had to take them off to give myself a break. The deer skin comfort strap is super soft and the protein pads are like big marshmallows! After extended use, maybe around 3 hours, they can get pretty warm but not uncomfortably warm. Iā€™m sure the summer heat will tell a different story. Iā€™ve never had a closed back headphone or even semi closed headphones before, so what kind of threw me off for a bit was feeling/hearing the vacuum like seal around the ears. It was something to get use to indeed.

IDk what Ryan does to these but at times they sounded like open backs! Maybe itā€™s my inexperience talking here but it really surprised me. The other headphones I mainly use are the 58X and Sundaraā€™s; even after a little A/B testing with them I was still confused on why these cans sound so open. I would assume itā€™s because of the large pads or maybe itā€™s that width that everyone has talked about. Speaking of that width, itā€™s pretty noticeable and itā€™s an absolute joy to listen to instruments being played at the far ends while a woman sings in the center and sometimes you can even hear some verticality. The low end was definitely noticeable, it wasnā€™t bloaty at all but instead it sounded deep and controlled. Vocals sounded incredible but they are not as intimate as the 58x. The imaging on these definitely donā€™t beat the Sundaraā€™s but Itā€™s not bad enough that it became really noticeable. These are more leaning towards the darker side right? Because the treble didnā€™t bother me at all, even though Iā€™m a little treble sensitive i think. Iā€™m very happy with how it sounds and I definitely plan to keep these for a long time.

Gaming is another reason why I bought these, not for competitive but for single player games. With Elden Ring right around the corner, I tested these with Dark Souls 3 for about 7 hours. Maaan, they sound soooo damn good. The bass and low end in general really makes a difference in hearing subtle background noises like the wind, whispers in the background, water flow, hearing your characters footsteps on different terrain, hearing an NPCā€™s deep voice and the boss music!

I can safely sayā€¦ The wait was completely worth it, especially at this price range! I apologize If I misused any terminology or simply made no sense, Iā€™m still learning. (Ā“-ļ¹-`ļ¼›)

I recently received my Argon mk3 and felt the same way about the bass. It sounded to be, all the same, one-note.

I was running it off a Topping L30, but I decided to upgrade my amp and grabbed a Topping A30pro.

Now the bass sounds way more textured, tight, and controlled. It made a huge difference for me, Iā€™m much happier now.

You make a lot of sense  Your first impressions match 100% my first impressions (posted above) and confirmed after one month of use.

I am really happy with them.

I have mentioned the positives. On the more critical side, I would say that they are not very detailed in general, but I really prefer a more relaxed, dark, and warm sound signature, so I am very happy with this. You canā€™t have it all.

Also, because of the sound signature, I usually listen these quite loud. So, thatā€™s a negative point on the long term, but music is so fun and engaging with themā€¦

After one month I have not find any other criticism. I really like these

I still have not tried these on the Asgard 3 (it should have enough power to move them without problems) so I am still using the Argons from the Hidizs S9 Pro. So far I have no complaints.

Probably they will get better with more power, but so far I am pleased with everything. I think that I got used to their bass and now I can clearly notice the different kinds of bass on different songs. (Joshua Valour recommended Excavation from the Haxan Cloak, to test bass, and it is a really interesting experience  )

Hi I just recently got a pair of balanced mk3 Argons and I was just wondering if Iā€™d be able to use this V-moda boom pro clone by faaeal to turn it into a comms headset when needed? thanks!

I believe it would work as that mic looks like it has a regular TRS plug on the headphone side, and balanced Argons can use regular single ended cables. FYI, argon balanced pin out is L+ > R+ > L- > R-.

However, the mic might connect at an awkward angle since Argons have their input on the side rather than bottom of the cup.

Sitting here listening to my Argons for the first time everā€¦

Ordered in October, rcvd January 31st. Massdrop T-X0 version with lambskin pads.

Thisā€¦ This is just how headphones are supposed to sound. Apologies to all other headphones out there. People arenā€™t kidding about how wide they are.

Running balanced off of an RME ADI-2 DAC with THX 789 and Hart cable.

Definitely dark. I can turn the bass down all the way on the RME and they still have as much bass as a Sennheiser. If I turn the bass all the way up, things get boomy and it really reverberates.

Hi,

Reviving this thread to ask about amp pairing. Iā€™m going ahead and purchasing these headphones, but want to make sure Iā€™m buying an amp thatā€™ll do them justice. Would a Topping L50 or Schiit Magnius get the job done or is it worth spending the extra money for something like the Topping A30 Pro?

I currently have an Atom amp, which gets the job done for my current headphones, but I know it wonā€™t get it done for the Argon MK3.

Iā€™ll also be buying an external DAC for these, as I do not yet own one, so open to suggestions for DAC as well.

Thanks!

So, whatā€™s your sound chain? What do you connect with the Atom amp?

I donā€™t know what Atom amp do you have, but my guess is that it should be enough and I would probably improve first the DAC part.

I understand that you want to be prepared when your new headphones arrive, I am like that. However I think that it is better to wait, try the Argons with your current gear, and then you can decide with that experience, with more information.

The Argons are demanding, yes, but in my experience that means that itā€™s not good to plug them directly into a phone or laptop, but any external amp has enough power to enjoy them. I use a dongle, the Hidisz S9 Pro, on the 3,5mm single ended, and it can move the Argons with enough power left to push. The Hidisz is around 70% and it sounds pretty loud.

Regarding amps, I know that there is a whole argument about ā€œit is not just about pure power and sound volume, thereā€™s also control and general quality of the ampā€. But, in my opinion, those differences do exist, but they are minimal. To give you an example, I prefer the Asgard 3 to the Dx3 Pro, for the LCD2 Classic. I have not tried these amps on the Argons. But if you ask me, the difference itā€™s not night and day, itā€™s more a nuance.

In conclusion, I think that you will improve more your sound quality with an external Dac than with a new amp.

Thanks for your response, Baku. Right now, I just have my laptop plugged into the Atom amp via 3.5mm cable. So I have been meaning to purchase/add a DAC to the equation.

Separately, now in a rabbit hole of T60rp Argon be the T50rp Mk3. If you have any insight there, would be appreciated. Iā€™m now contemplating the T60, thinking it might just be a more detailed/better version of the T50 (especially since the new MHA round suede pads Modhouse is offering for the T60 bring the bass up), but Iā€™m not sure if the T60 loses any of the fun/unique experience the T50 offers (width, soundstage, the sensation that some of the music is coming from behind you, etc).

If anyone has insight here, would be appreciated.

It have not tried the Tr60, so I donā€™t know how they perform. As far as I know they are more balanced than the TR50 MkIII, and some people find them too treble forward.

So it depends on what you are looking for. Probably the Tr60 is more refined, and it would be better for a wider variety of genres. The Argons are more specialized, but I would guess that they are better in that specific field.

I love the Argons, but I consider them to be pretty special. What are your other headphones?

As far as I know, it is difficult to find anything like the Argons, but on the more balanced, neutral field you have plenty of options.

I mostly use Sennheiser HD560S and Sundara (2020) on the Atom amp.

I PEQ (using Amir from Audio Science Reviewā€™s PEQs), using Hosting AU app on my Mac. I listen to all kinds of music, but hip hop is the biggest constant.

Been looking for new headphones (to mix it up - this is at work, so it adds something fun at work). I landed on the Argons after also considering Drop + Dan Clark Aeon Flow Closed. Argon seems to have what Iā€™m looking forā€”the sense of space, the bass, fun.

Iā€™m pretty happy with the way the A30pro controls the Argon mk3. The bass sounds more textured and rich. I had an L30 and it didnā€™t sound that great, the bass all sounded like it was just the same one note being played. Stepping up to the A30pro made all the difference.

I havenā€™t heard the L50 or Magnius, but the a30 pro is good! Love the pairing.

The 560s and the Sundara are mostly neutral, the Sundara are considered quite bright, if I am not wrong, so my guess would be that the Argons fill a different sound signature, the more bassy, darker and warmer sound. As far as I know the TR60 Modhouse are really good, but they are more neutral, more similar to what you already have.

In any case itā€™s a difficult choice, but all the options are good, so thereā€™s also no wrong decision, hehe
